Season Three of “The Walking Dead” begins in October, and by that time, many of us will probably have forgotten how badly parts of Season Two burned us, so we can begin anew with high expectations that will no doubt be smashed by the third episode. That said, there are at three compelling characters in the upcoming season that give us hope that it won’t be the same wooden acting and, hopefully, not the same belabored attempt to turn one page of a graphic novel into six episodes. The first of those characters is Michonne, who we got our first glimpse of at the end of season two. A couple of weeks ago, we also previewed our first look at Michonne without the hood.
The second new character in season three is the highly anticipated introduction of the series’ centerpiece villain, The Governor. The Governor’s storyline is essentially the heart of The Walking Dead series, the storyline the book readers most often refer to when discussion how great the series is. The third season will take place in a prison and on the The Governor’s estate. Here’s the first look at The Governor, played by British actor, David Morrissey.

Finally, the other new character isn’t a new character at all; it’s the return of an old one. You recognize this guy?

Merle Dixon is back. Last we saw him, he’d been left for dead handcuffed to a pipe on top of a roof. Judging from his new appendage, I guess we know how he got out of that jam. He’s going to be super pissed when he sees Rick again.

That’s an interesting way to prevent future stink palms, Merle.
It’s a good idea, do you know how long it takes for that smell to come off?
Oh Enrico, that was awesome
I look forward to watching this show on permanent fastforward and then reading the recap of the guy at videogum who basically makes the show eat its own shit every monday.
You could add Wynn Duffy, Don Draper, and Omar, all in character, and this show would still be terrible because the writers and main actors are terrible.
THIS.
Yet you still take the time to comment about it.
I fully understand the show drags on and lacks in several areas. That being said…zombies. The sometimes occasional, sometimes plethora (end of the season) of zombie killings is the main reason I keep coming back.
Is it a perfect show? No. Could it be seriously improved with a couple small changes? Yup. However, its still better than probably 90% of the shit on TV, so I watch on.
Maybe I’m the asshole here, but I really like the show. I read the comics and was insanely excited for the show, which underwhelmed me to be sure. Most of my problems with it lay in the first season, however. I understand the hunt for Sophia pissed a lot of people off, but I thought the show more than made up for it with some epic zombie kills and some great scenes – like Rick and Shane’s fight, the bar scene, and Shane and Otis’s escape.
The acting could certainly improve, I don’t fully buy Lincoln as Rick, but I’m happy to see a zombie show that’s at least trying. Also, I don’t think anyone is supposed to like Lori. She’s meant to be awful, that doesn’t make her character poorly written. I loved the scene where she tried to convince Andrea to do laundry and wash dishes, I thought it was meant to show that Lori had completely cracked. Same with here differing opinions on Rick/Shane, to me she’s a Lady Macbeth type character who has just lost it. Her crash in the car though, yea, that was terrible writing.
Ughhhhh… Seriously, Merle? The worst character on a show plagued by weak characters? How the hell is he an improvement?
I don’t see how you can call him the worst character… He was barely in the show
A guy telling racist jokes while handcuffed on top of a building for all of 1 1/2 episodes who then cuts off his own hand is the ‘worst’ character?
Any reason as to why you think that?
Plus he was in Days of Thunder… oh, I see your point now.
sweet wheelchair brah
Merle was the first sign that the show as a whole was going to be a step down from the flawless pilot. He’s a total fucking caricature. His sole motivation is “I’m racist.” But most of all, I don’t find anything he does or says believable. He’s not recognizably human, or even compellingly evil. He’s just a pain in the ass — the least interesting kind of antagonist. I probably hate him more because he was the first sign of writing problems, especially in terms of character motivation, to come. So in retrospect, I hate him more for the precedent he set than anything he ever did on screen.
Don’t talk shit on Rowdy Burns.
Wasn’t Merle on drugs? Isn’t that a good explanation for how wild and unbelievable he was? He doesn’t seem human because he was high on crystal meth when we first meet him. Then his scenes later on were from Darryl’s imagination and that was one of the strongest episodes of the season IMO.
Mischone needs to be done right not to appease fans. The show cannot revolve around the prision.
I like that Merle is coming back. It will make Daryl’s struggle to keep with the group even harder, and Daryl is the best character on the show.
Agreed. Daryl is the only character that makes sense.
The Governor arc is what made me stop reading the comic.
The finale was a whole bunch of rad…..*Bart Scott voice* Can’t Wait!
I swear I saw that asian dude behind the Governor lighting & throwing firecrackers at Marky Mark & John C Reilly….
….and does this mean Merle is gonna have a chainsaw hand? Cause that would be Ash-tastic!
I hope Merle or The Governor tortures and kills Lori.
I just want to point out that you somehow omitted to include Lori in the Compelling Season Three TWD Character list.
I kid, I kid. Or do I?
He looks about as much like the Governor should as my dog does. Are they going to pronounce it “Guvnuh”? Dislike the casting choice.
WHERE’S CARL ?
Possible Spoiler:
Now i don’t know who might take Rick’s “charm” the Gov like in the comics, or Merle….hmmm….I just want to see Andrea grow into hers…..
And damn it give some black ppl some roles AMC..all the black roles last season were given to Shane…..poor T-dog…the comic was pretty diverse…stop being dicks hahaha
