CNN Plays ‘Stupid Girls’ Before Sarah Palin Segment, Didn’t Mean Anything By It (Wink Wink)

CNN, which has been struggling with miserable ratings, will shed its head honcho at the end of the year, and recently came under fire for its boneheaded coverage of the Supreme Court’s health care decision, has finally given us a reason to watch. They sort of kind of but didn’t really mean to call Sarah Palin a doorknob. Good for them!

Specifically, before a segment in which Sarah Palin was going to grace the airwaves with her eloquent tweets on Chick-Fil-A (“The Bible says a Chick-Fil-A in every belly and a straight couple in every bedroom!”), CNN played Pink’s song, “Stupid Girls” off her 2006 album, I’m Not Dead. Of course, CNN — now facing criticism from … other stupid people? … claims that the song was in no way linked to the segment. It was just a coincidence.

“The music selection was a poor choice and was not intended to be linked to any news story,” a CNN spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter via The New York Mag, adding, “We regret any perception that they were planned together.”

Really? Here’s a few problems with that statement. Why would CNN choose a six-year-old song that wasn’t that popular to begin with (it peaked at #13 on the charts) to play before a Palin segment? Let’s not even mention the fact that it’s a terrible song that doesn’t really jibe well with the news. Now, if it were Garbage’s “Stupid Girl,” I might understand. That was a decent goddamn song.

Personally, I think there’s a producer in the CNN booth that has a sense of humor, and WE MUST STAMP IT OUT. CNN is the middle-of-the-road news network with lousy ratings; they’re not allowed a sense of humor.

Then again, I think they could’ve done a better job of choosing a song. Here’s a few other options CNN could’ve gone with (and please, feel free to add your own in the comments):

“They’re Coming To Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!,” by Napoleon XIV.
“You Talk Too Much,” by Run DMC.
“Dumb,” by Nirvana.
“Funny Farm,” by Dr. Demento.
“Your Racist Friend,” by They Might Be Giants.
“Brain Damage,” by Pink Floyd.
“American Idiot,” Green Day.
“The Reading Rainbow” Theme.
