Yesterday, in the post Dustin did on the frequent use of Chekhov’s gun in Breaking Bad, commenter “gunnar_jensen” wondered if it was possible for UPROXX to go a single day without posting something related to Breaking Bad. The answer is no, we cannot. We simply love the show way too much.
So to up the ante even more, so to speak, today we’re welcoming RJ Mitte — aka Walter Jr. and his former alter ego “Flynn” — over to the site to hang out in the comments section of this post to answer questions from our readers. Break out that bottle of tequila, Uncle Hank — it’s time to par-tay.
With that said, here are some interesting things I recently learned about RJ…
- He is originally from Lafayette, La., deep in the heart of Cajun country. (MAIS, HOW ABOUT DAT!?)
- Like his character on the show, RJ has cerebral palsy, although his is a milder form of the disability than Walter Jr.’s.
- RJ can be soon seen starring as Tim in the upcoming fantasy thriller film House of Last Things. (Watch the trailer here.)
- In his free time RJ enjoys hiking Runyon Canyon and ballroom dancing. Additionally, he hopes to direct and produce in the future.
With all of that out of the way, RJ will join us at 3:00PM EST/12:00PM PST to reply to questions and comments about Breaking Bad, his career, the importance of a hearty breakfast, etc. Feel free to get your questions in early and please direct them all to @RJ. He’ll get to as many as he can. Please welcome him with open, adoring arms.

DAMN! First I missed Black Dynamite and now this?

Sorry I have to go. Thank you all so much for typing in! If you all need me, you can find me on Facebook or Twitter! Thank you all again for watching. Have a good day!
Thanks for dropping by, RJ. I’ll forever think of you on the rare occasions I eat turkey bacon from here on out.
@RJ Breaking Bad will end and we will all be very sad. But, as a talented young actor you’ve probably got a lot of options on what you do next.
Are you planning to stay in TV land or move on to feature films?
What other roles do you think you’re going to get? Anything else? Will it involve breakfast food?
@RJ, what hobbies do you have to keep busy between scenes?
Verified
Hello everyone! Thank you so much for typing in. I will do my best to make sure that I answer all your questions. Thank you so much for watching the show!! Thank you all so much for being fans!
I have nothing to add to this conversation, except that I think you are doing a phenomenal job playing Walt Jr.
Can you answer the age old question: Sausage or Bacon. Which is the better breakfast food.
Yesterday there was the column about Chekhov’s gun. When reading the scripts ahead of time, is it next to impossible to pick up on these things (I’d imagine it is) and secondly in an episode like the season 4 finale, do you get to even see the entire script? (i.e. did you know Gus was going to get his face blown off?)
@RJ Follow up to the Comic-con question so feel free to bypass this to get to others’ questions.
Did you get to walk the floor or would you ever?
A lot of celebrities do it in costume. What costume would you wear to hide from the Walt Jr. fans?
Verified
Yes I did walk the floor. Comic was brilliant!!
Verified
Yes I did walk the floor. Comic was brilliant!! I did not go in character. I had glasses on so no one recognized me
The old Superman/Clark Kent routine. Nice!
@RJ With Breaking Bad being your first major project, how has the bar been raised as you start reading scripts for your post-BB acting gigs?
Verified
The bar has been raised quite a bit. Breaking Bad’s writers are truly genius. They have amazing abilities to tell stories!
@RJ Did you get the chance to really push the Challenger or just drive to then park in the driveway?
Verified
No, I did not get to push that Challenger, but I did get to drive around in a different one. They are quite fun!
What was your fav. episode to shoot/watch? Least fav. episode?
@RJ: Do you receive full scripts for each episode or do you only get the sides that have your character in the scenes (in this case, Walt Jr; Anna Gunn gets Skyler, etc) so as to avoid anything leaking or being spoiled?
Note: I forgot to direct the comment before.
And you have already answered the other one.
IGNORE!
@RJ Who should Romney pick as his VP?
@RJ does Bryan Cranston still whistle made up tunes on set so he gets music dues, which he then uses to buy drinks for the crew?
Verified
Yes he does! But, I do not think he has had too many whistling scenes this year
I attended the Breaking Bad SDCC panel, which was awesome! Thanks for coming out to meet the fans!
But, it seemed that you, Dean Norris, Betsy Brandt and Jonathan Banks didn’t really get to say much. All of the fan questions were directed at Bryan or Vince. It seems to be a sad trend at most of the panels. I think more fans need to ask questions to the entire table…
Anyway, I was curious if there was any question you were hoping would get asked or anything you wanted to hint at but didn’t get time?
Verified
Thank you for coming out! There is only so much time you can get on a panel. Overall, I was just so amazed at all the people who came out to see the panel. You all are who make TV and shows like Breaking Bad possible! Thank you! I was up for any questions… It is Comic Con.
@RJ Any chance for Walt Jr taking over the family business?
Verified
You never know… You’ll have to watch and see!
Do you receive full scripts for each episode or do you only get the sides that have your character in the scenes (in this case, Walt Jr; Anna Gunn gets Skyler, etc) so as to avoid anything leaking or being spoiled?
Verified
Yes, we do receive the full episodes. The ending is blacked out though, we do not know how it ends. But, we don’t have to worry about spoils or leaks because the story is so amazing, why ruin it.
Good point. But you just never know. These things get leaked all the time somehow.
@RJ since breaking bad and mad men are the top 2 dramas (tv shows really) on tv and are both on amc. is there some sort of in-network rivalry between the two shows? especially around awards season? (i like to imagine some sort of jets vs sharks dance fight showdowna between the two shows)
Verified
I would say yes and no during award time. The whole cast and crew of Mad Men are truly amazing, but its time for Breaking Bad to win an ensemble!
@RJ Serious question about the breakfast thing — is there a larger significance to the frequent White family breakfast scenes that we, the fans of the show, are missing?
Also, are our breakfast jokes old yet or what?
Verified
The only time Walt Jr. is home is breakfast, so it’s a time for the whole family to get together.
@RJ Now that Walter Jr. has his driver’s license, how long before he starts running over bad guys?
Verified
Soon! You’ll just have to wait and see in the upcoming episodes!
@RJ Who came up with “Flynn,” and does anyone at school or friends call you that now?
Verified
No, Vince and the writers came up with that one.
@RJ: Lunch; yay or nay?
Verified
YAY!
@RJ For the good of the drama and as a way of attempting to out-dark The Sopranos’ final season I would like to see your character die in the cross fire or through suicide somehow and Walter to take this as the final straw, repent and then take his own life.
Do you think the show could get that dark? Because I really hope it gets that fucking dark.
Verified
It’s all up to Vince. He is the genius behind the show. If he wants it this dark he will make it this dark. It’s all up in the air…
@RJ: Any other projects on the horizon after Breaking Bad? Anything you’d love to do?
Verified
Yes I do. I have a documentary that taking place in New Mexico that I am working on and raising funds for at the moment. Then just looking at what’s ahead of me… I am open to anything!
@RJ: 1-10 scale, how much did Aaron Paul look like Krysten Ritter? My guess is 8+
[25.media.tumblr.com]
Verified
I would say an 8 too. I thought he was Krysten when he walked in
@RJ Which cast member is the worst farter? I’m guessing Johnathan Banks. Has the old man farts.
@RJ Breaking Bad is probably the show that causes the most people to go insane over spoiler alerts because it seems like very few people watch the episodes as they air for whatever reason (Viacom and DirecTV suck, waiting for friends, Twitter geeks). Do you have a stance on spoiler alert rules? How long after an episode airs does a person need to wait before it’s not a spoiler alert?
Verified
There is always a spoiler alert with shows like Breaking Bad because there is so much in an episode that you do not catch it all the first time.
@RJ
Can you do us all a favor and pull whatever is in Skyler’s snatch out and promptly kill it. If you could time travel back to earlier seasons, that would be best.
@RJ: In your opinion, is turkey bacon a viable low fat alternative, or a crime against breakfast?
Verified
Good turkey bacon is amazing, but it is still kind of a crime against breakfast
@RJ I heard Aaron Paul say that he and his mom freaked when he got cast in the show because they were both huge Malcolm in the Middle fans. Were you also a Bryan Cranston fanboy before the show started?
@RJ: More serious question: Who would you want to be your dad/father-figure? Bryan Cranston or Dean Norris?
Verified
Both Bryan and Dean are amazing fathers, they really are. They both have kids of their own and are amazing to them, and to me!
@RJ: Once and for all, seriously: Waffles or Pancakes?
Verified
Is it too much to ask for both??
@RJ: Follow up question: Any teensy weensy clue as to what Jesse Plemons’ character is going to be?
@RJ: Is it true that you used to date Miley Cyrus? 100% serious, I would love to see her cameo as a methstitute. Like a “pre-Wendy,” if you will. Do you think you hook that up?
Verified
No we did not date. I was just on her show when I was just starting acting
@RJ: Your character is the only one who got to see Walter with all of his defenses down, leading to an interesting twist on the father-son dynamic. Do you feel like Walt Jr will continue to act as a moral compass for his dad?
Verified
I do believe that he will be a moral compass for his father, but on that note. Does anyone know how far the apple falls from the tree?
@RJ: (Without giving away spoilers, I guess) Do you see your character’s love for his father stressed to the breaking point? Do you think it could break?
Verified
I think it can go either way. Walt Jr. does love his father very much, but at the end of the day how much will Heisenberg take over?
@RJ: If you could guest star on any other show, what show would it be?
Verified
Wilfred would definitely be one! But, really I’m down for anything
Hahaha astute analysis! Can’t believe you even answered that.
@RJ: Who would make a better ballroom dancing partner, Badger or Skinny Pete?
Verified
I’d go with Skinny Pete. Easier to get him around the dance floor…
Hahaha astute analysis! Can’t believe you even answered that. (whoops accidentally replied to the wrong thread above)
@RJ: How disappointing is it that Breaking Bad isn’t getting a sixth season and a movie?
Verified
It’s disappointing, but every show has to have his end. And I am so happy we have ours!
Well its always better to go out on top than to overstay your welcome (or fire your showrunner and piss off the whole internet…)
@RJ How long was the “roof pizza” really on that roof?
Verified
It was up there for a little bit. I can’t give you the exact hours, but it was up there for a while
Who is the most intense? Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, or Giancarlo Esposito? If only one could win an Emmy this year who would it be?
Verified
I would have to say all three. They are amazing in every way! Really, I couldn’t pick just one
Did you guys ever eat any of the Venezia’s pizza that was on the set no doubt for the famous scene? (local small pizza chain here in PHX with a location in ABQ) That is some good pizza, be a shame if the crew was not able to sample.
@RJ: Who’s more fun on set: Bryant Cranston or Aaron Paul?
Verified
They are both amazing. I love them both!
@RJ would you like to see your character get involved in the meth game with his Pops? Or would you prefer to keep him clean?
Verified
It’s up in the air. I really can’t say for sure.
@RJ Who on set besides Vince Gilligan knows the most X-Files trivia?
@RJ do you feel like your scenes were lacking in Season 4? In previous seasons, securing the livelihood of your character has been a major driving force in Walt’s descent into villainy, will we see more of that in S5?
Verified
I was in season 4 that much. But, I did have an amazing scene with me and Bryan. And you can expect more in season 5! I can not wait for the next 8
@RJ Do you ever get a chance to call Jesse a bitch?
@RJ will Walter Jr ever have a clue about what’s going on?
Verified
I think some day Walt Jr. will find out. But, for the moment, you will just have to watch and see!
@RJ, How often does Cranston thank you for not being Frankie Muniz? Follow up, when can we expect to see six packs of Schraderbrau in stores?
I legit laughed out loud on this. Thank you.
Well done.
@RJ, Is the artist formerly known as Walter Jr. just about done with his parents? I know both Walt and Skyler are pro’s at catching people lying or holding back, I just assume he is and he’s pissed at both of them.
