Kurt Sutter is such a hack. He’s one of the worst writers working in television. No wonder he’s never gotten an Emmy. Sons of Anarchy is ass. How could he let Tara live for so long? How does he live with himself?
Actually, I don’t mean any of that — except for the part about Tara. She should totally die. However, I understand that if you call out Kurt Sutter on your blog, Kurt Sutter will magically appear and call you horrible names in the comments and it’s a lifelong dream of mine to be called a “fatc*ntblogger” by Kurt Sutter.
Here’s a tweet from last year, for instance.
fatc*ntbloggers. keep looking for a reason not to f–king kill yourselves. it’s gonna get harder everyday. eventually you will succumb.
and the day you lay bleeding out of the back of your head with a smoking gun barrel in your mouth, will be the day i begin my salsa lessons.
Damn, Kurt. If I weren’t such a self-hating fat blogger, I’d have probably taken offense to that. As it is, a teaser trailer for season five of Sons of Anarchy is out, and suddenly, I don’t feel like succumbing. I want to hang around for another six months to see how Sutter works out of the narrative jam he put himself in at the end of season four. I’m sure he’ll acquit himself admirably because, angry tweets notwithstanding, when Sutter is on, he’s one of the best, as we saw in all of season four leading up to the deux ex cop-out finale.
The teaser doesn’t give us any new footage from the upcoming season, but it strongly suggests that Jax is going to take a narrative nosedive. The power is going to go to his head; he’s going to ignore the counsel of his wife and mother, and figuratively speaking, he’s going to end up at the bottom of a ravine.
I cannot wait. Bring it hard, Sutter.
Great song.

This show really devolved into an overacted masutrbatory mess. Season 2 was brilliant, but I fear that was the peak.
Season 2 was a masterpiece.
Wow what symbolism. I guess we don’t have to worry about Tara getting pregnant this season since they didn’t ride through any tunnels.
The only thing I hated about S4 was the whole thing with the pseudo-racism angle. I hated that.
Like everything else in S4, the racism thing would’ve been great had it actually gone somewhere interesting other than “check your birth certificate.”
Sons was the first show that WG turned me on to, and I’m still glad that it did. I’m giving S5 my full attention, but if Kurt doesn’t get his fastball back I am out.
The racism was weird, but the more problematic part of that was something that’s become endemic in the show — the way in which people keep stupid secrets from their loved ones and create all kinds of needless chaos as a result.
We saw it with Gemma not telling the guys about the rape, then Chibbs not telling them about Stahl, then Juice not telling them about the cops’ blackmail efforts, and on and on.
If Sutter hinges any more plot developments on stupid secrets and overblown misunderstandings, this show will basically be Three’s Company: The Biker Years.
He does lean pretty heavily on that tactic, but I’m alright w/ it mostly. It creates compelling drama when, say, Juice gets scared and makes a bad decision. I really thought there was a chance that he’d get caught and killed.
But the end of S4 revealed that there was no chance of Juice getting caught and killed. There’s no chance of Clay having to pay for his mistakes. There are no real consequences for anyone on this show. Look at the knots they (Sutter) tied themselves into to make sure nothing big changed. I think Mr. Rowles might have been right to call Sutter a hack.
But I like Tera. I want her to stick around.
The Regal Beagle has always been a SAMCRO hang out. Ralph Furley AND Stanley Roper were Original 9.
Still pains me to this day the fucked up way the Original 9 got rid of Jim, the Regal Beagle bartenter. NOT COOL BROS.
Man, I would watch the shit out of a Sons season that chronicled an Original 9 that had Roper and Furley.
I bet Roper thought Piney was … you know.
Otto: SOA is slowly turning into a show about all the characters having cell phones that don’t have any bars. LEARN SOME BASIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS, YOU STUPID BIKER HICKS!!!
It was pretty stupid
“They’ll kick me out of the club if they find out my dad was black”
So you decide to rat on their heroin deal with a Mexican cartel? That seemed like a better idea?
Also, never mind the fact that they thought he was Puerto Rican and that other charters obviously have members of different races. Even Mexican members which is odd considering their biggest enemy is a Mexican biker gang.
See, I took it that Tara and Jenna were going to interfere and cause (or more likely nearly cause) Jax’s demise, while the rest of the council just look on.
And if Jenna’s heels were any higher he wouldn’t have seen her as he drove through her legs.

That teaser is pretty clearly an allegory about the role of campaign finance legislation in the degradation of America’s wetlands. I mean, how could he have spelled it out any clearer?
America’s Redwood lands?
Season four was horrible. Sutter should take a lesson from Boardwalk Empire.
If Sutter wants to make Sons extremely boring, then yes, yes he should.
Forgive me for being daft, but what song is that?
Dan Auerbach (of the Black Keys), “Trouble Weighs a Ton”
@Otto thanks man, I didn’t even know he had his own blues album.
Keep It Hid (his solo album) is awesome.
Saw his solo tour and am kind of sad he’s not likely to play any of the songs on tour with the Black Keys.
Yes, the whole album is awesome.
And if you watch decent TV, you’ve likely heard bits of it already. Friday Night Lights used a couple songs from it, I think. “When the Night Comes” was in one episode, and after Dillon East wins the title, “Goin’ Home” plays over the scene of Coach driving home with the trophy. All good.
I think “the Prowl” was in Bored to Death also.
So when will S4 come out on Netflix instant? I totes need to catch up.
If you want to spend the cash, you can watch it on Amazon prime.
Can I watch it for free if I have Amazon Prime?
I’m pretty sure you can. I paid for the most recent seasons of Archer and BB, but seem to remember SoA as free w membership
That was for you, Omar
Thanks, I see S4 isn’t on Prime video yet. Maybe once it is I may subscribe…I do quite a bit of shopping there anyways.
You’re welcome. Even paying full freight for Archer, SoA and BB current seasons, I’m saving $ over cable. I also buy/rent movie on Vudu, and still haven’t hit the $80/month I’d otherwise be spending
Neither Juice nor Clay should have lived. The scene where Juice is in the tree and puts the chain around his neck was perfect, and when I heard the thump of him hitting the ground as the logo bled in…that was where the season started going downhill for me. And Jax not killing Clay was just ridiculous.
This.
I thought there were some lame attempts for drama by sutter having juice not go to the club with the blackmail info, but then I revisited earlier seasons and paid particular attention to juice. Sutter is a genius, juices actions fit him all the way through this, the drama was a beneficial side effect.
