A couple of nights ago, on the Tonight Show, Kelsey Grammer was asked why he was denied an Emmy nomination for his performance in Boss last season. His response? It might have had something to do with the fact that he is a Republican.
“It may have to do with several things, honestly, but I think it’s possible … I mean, I am a … I’m a declared out of the closet Republican in Hollywood,” said Grammer. He went on to say, “Do I believe it’s possible that some young person, young voting actor — or even older voting member for the Emmys — would sit there and go, ‘Yeah, that’s a great performance, but ooooooooooooh, I just hate everything he stands for?’ [Cue sarcasm.] I don’t believe that’s possible.” Via EW
It’s true, Grammer’s performance on Boss last season was a blistering tour de force. The man pulled Shakespeare out of his ass and shook him around like a rag doll. Besides Kathleen Robertson’s frequent nudity, there was no better reason to watch Boss than Kelsey Grammer’s evil performance. If you’re not watching the show, which returns tomorrow night, you’re missing a nicely written, brilliantly performed, tightly-wound political drama (with lots of nudity!).
So, despite all of that, why was Grammer denied an Emmy nomination? It had nothing to do with the fact that he was a big old George W. Bush supporter. I mean, the Emmy voters love to nominate people for going full retard; there’s no reason they wouldn’t nominate someone who politically supported one. It’s more likely that one of these five reasons is responsible for Kelsey Grammer’s snub:
1) Boss was seen by only 300,000 people a week. To put that in perspective, earlier this year, L.A. Complex set the record for the lowest ratings EVER for a show on a broadcast network with 646,000 viewers. That’s twice the ratings of Boss.
2) The show is on Starz! Starz is the home of Spartacus and, er, Spartacus: Vengeance. Even when Starz was airing one of television’s best comedies, Party Down, (which had even lower ratings than Boss), no one was watching the network. You know what deserved an Emmy nomination before Grammer for Best Actor? Party Down for best sitcom. And Party Down starred a bunch of pinko commie liberals.

3) Because Boss is brilliantly acted soft-core porn. Of course, that’s part of the appeal for me (people that complain about too much sex on great television shows make my head spin), but Emmy voters aren’t going to vote for soft-core porn. You think the sexposition in Game of Thrones is gratuitous? On Boss, they don’t even combine it with exposition: Kathleen Robertson or Hannah Ware’s characters just like to take a break from the action of f–k every once in a while. Good for them!
4) Damian Lewis in Homeland, Jon Hamm in Mad Men, Hugh Bonneville in Downton Abbey, and Steve Buscemi in Boardwalk Empire all delivered as good or better performances than Grammer in SHOWS THAT PEOPLE WATCHED. Michael C. Hall? I could see the debate, but you know who else didn’t get nominated? Timothy Olyphant. Now, that’s the real crime here (and Olyphant is not a Republican, so far as I know).
5) Because Bryan MOTHEREFFING Cranston in Breaking Bad is going to win it anyway.

Now shut the f— up, Grammer, stop playing the victim, go buy your 17th wife something nice (family values!), and keep turning in strong performances on Boss until someone pays attention to the show.

Yo Kelsey Grammer, you already have 850 f***ing Emmys
So I’m guessing he was a commie pinko when he was on Frasier.
Always nice when I jump down and post and someone has already made my point in the very first post. Sheesh.
Almost as bad as the time I declared that Dewey beat Truman. Boy did I have egg on my face.
To wikipedia: he’s got 4 for Frasier, 1 for playing Sideshow Bob. Plus Frasier won Best Comedy 5 years in a row. Plus he’s nominated another whole big bunch of times if that’s all he’s complaining about now.
Whats better than 1 crawfish dinner? FIIIIIIVE crawfish dinners.
I watched all of the first season of Boss becuase I’ve liked just about everything Kelsey Grammer’s done. I even liked Down Periscope. But I could never buy him as a ruthless kingpin. Maybe Tom KANE is too close to Frasier CRANE, because Frasier Crane can’t whoop my ass.
Frasier Crane could whoop your ass if you both were in a Wine-Tasting competition. Or a Mongolian-Throat Singing Appreciation group.
Eh, I actually liked Grammer’s performance there.
But when I find the sex scenes to be too gratuitous, then you know it’s gone too far. If that show had been on a channel other than sT&Arz it might have been good.
Hugh Bonneville is so good on Downton Abbey that even that terrible subplot with the maid didn’t ruin his chances.
Also terrific on Twenty Twelve the Olympic prep satire. Might have been the best TV I saw this summer.
“…the Emmy voters love to nominate people for going full retard; there’s no reason they wouldn’t nominate someone who politically supported one.”
I mean… really? What exactly was the point of that potshot in regards to your post? I’m not a Bush fan in the slightest, but the world really doesn’t need any more wannabe Matt Taibbi’s.
I woke up this morning thinking that the world didn’t have enough wannabe Matt Taibbi’s. Hallelujah! My prayers have been answered.
Remember when John Larroquette won like 4 or 5 Emmys in a row for his character Dan Fielding on Night Court? He actually came out and asked not to be considered to give some other people a chance for an Emmy.
It would take a similar plea from Bryan Cranston to allow anyone else to win it anyway.
I think I’d put Dan Fielding against any human in the race of awesome asshole.
Jesus, I wish Tony Shaloub had done that 8 goddamn years ago. Who the hell kept giving Monk all those Emmys? Did they just keep reading the same envelope every year?
And.. doesn’t he have an emmy from Frasier? I could be wrong. Or is he saying that back then no one knew he was a rightwing totalitarian nutbag.
There is some prejudice in certain circles in Hollywood about people who are openly Republican, that reason is going to be pretty far down the list of why he got snubbed.
Why are there so many political cheap shots in Warming Glow posts lately?
Lately?
Because its fun.
Yes, lately. Ufford kept in mind that he was writing a TV blog and not a Daily Kos post.
I was being sarcastic when I asked “lately?” It’s been happening here longer than just lately, say since Matt left.
Well yea, and the site is also gone. Nice work, [insert name of someone who writes for Warming Glow because I don't know any of them, because I don't read it anymore].
HI GUYS.
BRING BACK MAAaaa..oh I hi Danger.
*Quietly walks away whistling.*
Because the whole point of this story was a politically charged accusation.
And also, who cares what you think. Mitt Romney wears pink panties.
This is one of my favorite tv blogs…the random, unnecessary and most importantly (for this site) unfunny political jabs littered in the blog posts lately have become tiresome.
Well, there’s a fairly important political election coming up soon, so everything tends to get politicized.
Yeah, why bring politics into a TV blog when a TV star says his politics are the reason he didn’t get nominated for a TV award because the people behind it have different political views?
I mean, honestly!
You want to bring politics into a television discussion, go for it. I’ll be the first to jump in. But calling a former president a retard completely unprovoked simply because you’re on the other side of the ideological spectrum of said president… yeah, sorry, but that just brings down the quality of what it is an otherwise awesome tv blog.
I mean yeah that’s not a high point of political humor, but as someone who has lived under Bush rule most of his life (Texas born and raised) I think it’s fair to remind people that Kelsey Grammer supported ol’ Georgie. There’s a difference between a Republican and a Bush Vote. The difference is common sense.
Is it considered a political jab or cheapshot when it’s true?
I mean, come on. Dude was dim.
Other conservatives with Emmy noms:
Craig T. Nelson
Tom Selleck
Patricia Heaton
Gary Sinise
James Woods
Jon Voigt
Ron Silver
But its a left-wing conspiracy.
People who use the word noms are fucking heinous.
Watch your back, dude.
I 100 percent agree … Timonthy Olyphant (and Justified, period) was snubbed by Emmys this year. Not Grammer.
I don’t believe that for a second, I mean the part about LA Complex having 646,000 people who actually watched it.
Sheesh, what are you guys, the fucking Grammer Police?
+1
I’ll add my voice to those who say keep the politics out of a TV Blog.
I get that Grammer made the comment and that WG can/should cover it (especially if it is an excuse to link to Kathleen Robertson sex scenes). Whether his comment is true or not or whether there is or is not a bias against conservatives in Hollywood is clearly in bounds. I don’t think an unwarranted jab at one side or the other is necessary in covering the story.
Readers from both sides come here because it is a great TV blog, not for politics.
It ‘was’.
Maybe it wasn’t necessary, but 80% of the text on this site, since its inception, has been unnecessary. 100% of the articles on this site could just be the headline with no text and we’d get the same basic information. I come here for the gratuity, commentary and ‘unnecessary’ asides.
I think it’s awesome when sensitive republicans get their panties in a bunch because someone said something mean. Waaaaah!
If you don’t like the unwarranted jabs then go full retard. Complain about the constant unwarranted bashing of Roseanne, the Kardashians, people on Entourage, people with cats, reality TV stars, etc.
We can tolerate negativity about all those retards but hell no, not our retarded former president.
Don’t cut the balls of this blog. Please.
@mattyj2001 – FYI I would object to Warming Glow referring to Obama as Jimmy Carter 2.0 as a uncalled for as the swipe at Bush. As true as it might be, the outrage from the the left leaning commentators on this site would cause the comments to go far and away from TV news which is what I come here for.
I don’t think it is a tall order asking the writers to avoid unnecessary political partisanship in their posts. I would prefer they just kept giving us good content like the looked over shows on Netflix, and left it up to Politico, HuffPo, and NJ for political content.
It’s been clinically proven that left wingers, except for Sean Penn, have over-developed senses of humor. So feel free to bash Obama all you want. Though Al Gore is an easier target.
Not trying to start any kind of political debate, both sides kinda suck in their own ways. The problem is that right-wingers are just so damn sensitive and play the victim so well, and left-wingers couldn’t care less about that kind of thing.
Wow conservatives cry like fucking babies my God. Between Kelsey Grammer and the idiots in the comments it’s like a nursery in here.
sounds like just one reason “he’s on Starz” but trying to make it 5 separate reasons
“Boss was seen by only 300,000 people a week.”
So, by the “relatively nobody watched it” standards, we’re all cool with “The Wire” never receiving major Emmy nods, then? Okay.
AndreReedRichards asks the tough questions. If that’s your argument, Rowles, then this guy’s got a point, and you can go ahead and apply that logic to “Community” as well. I can’t get people to watch “Boss” because they all say the same thing:
“I don’t like Kelsey Grammer”
Which is weird to me, because you’re not supposed to like Kelsey Grammer at all in this series. And I think it has a lot to do with his politics. I’m more inclined to get people to just WATCH the show and not worry about him winning any awards.
Oh, and can I call a moratorium on that damn Dan Harmon picture of him with his cat post coital on every Dan Harmon story? I want to like him, but that picture is turning me on him slowly.
Brilliant post
1. Grammar is a recently professed republican
2 . Other shows e.g. The wire won Emmys with low audiences
3. OMG! Nudity! Oh that’s right. There’s no other explicit nudity on shows like breaking bad. Mad men. Our you shitting me!
4. There was bias against Kelsey
