Martin Starr has been involved in a number of my favorite film and television projects. He’s been in everything from Freaks and Geeks to Knocked Up to Adventureland to one of my favorite television shows of the past decade, Party Down. His latest project, the Adult Swim live action comedy NTSF:SD:SUV, will begin its second season on August 9th (right after the premiere of Childrens Hospital), and is also terrific. So, with all that said, I am extremely happy to announce that Martin Starr will be joining us for a live Q&A in the comments today.
The chat is scheduled to begin at 12 PM EST, and will go for about half an hour or so, which gives you all plenty of time to come up with some good questions, although if you’re anything like me you already have about a million questions about the Steve Guttenberg episode of Party Down locked and loaded. (Sample: “He was the best, right? I bet he was the best. Oh man.”)
Two tips to help this all run as smoothly as possible: (1) Begin all your questions with “@Martin” or “@MartinStarr” to keep things organized and allow him to find your questions easily, and (2) Feel free to load up some questions ahead of time, but keep in mind you have a much better chance of getting yours answered the closer to 12 PM you post them. This should be fun.

Thank you! A good day to you all
Thanks for showing up and answering our dumb questions.
I’m especially thankful that you stayed around for longer than the posted “about half an hour or so” so I got some of MY dumb questions answered.
@ Martin: Do you still audition for roles, or do most of your parts come from people writing for your voice?
I figure you have a pretty great comedy resume now that people may just write a part and say “We need Martin Starr for this. End of story”.
Verified
It’s a bit of both, I suppose. I am still auditioning, yes. Now I’m writing for myself so I hope that gets to be seen in the next year.
Hard sci-fi?
Just kidding.
So I swear im not a stalker just bored and currious dont want you to think im weird lol sorry for all the questions but you got a fuckin awesome personality and not stuck up (: @martinstarr
Verified
Okay, I believe you.
Thank you
@Martin: In Madeon’s “Pop Culture” music video, why wasn’t it you dancing in the streets?
Verified
Maybe next time
Loved your cameo by the way, should have mentioned that.
Big thanks to Martin Starr for being cool enough to hang out with us, answer all our questions, and being all around awesome. You rule, dude. Game of Bullshit it is from now on.
Agreed. Thanks @Martin. It’s been entertaining.
as a juggalo friend of mine once said: whoop whoop!
Verified
Thank you, guys
Too bad if he’s leaving, but pretty sweet he showed up to answer some stupid internet questions.
Warming Glow is slowly becoming a hot spot for niche actors to do AMAs.
You’re a swell bro, Martin. Thanks for dropping by.
Hey dummy, wait until he’s gone to refer to him as a “niche actor”….
Unless, you know….you accidentally deleted “with leading man potential”.
I did. Damn keyboard!
Verified
I’m right where I want to be. Leading man isn’t it. It would have to be special for me to break that boundary. I found one script that’s made me want to play the lead. It was so good. Still hasn’t been made, I believe. So, there’s hope.
What’s you’re favorite color @martinstarr
Verified
Purple
@martin: what’re you drinkin (when you’re drinkin)?
Verified
Guinness or Scotch on the rocks
Ken or Ryu?
Verified
Potato tomato
@martin: when do you pronounce “the” as vs ?
son of a bitch. (thee) vs (thuh).
Verified
Buddy, you’re gonna have to figure that one out on your own. Personal decision. I have faith in you.
@martin: man, what happened with undeclared? that show was cool. you should hit up hunnam and ask for a spot on Sons of Anarchy.
Verified
It got canceled. And I don’t know what’s going on with him. Haven’t talked to Chuck in a while.
@martin I just bought Party Down on Amazon so I can rewatch it. You’re welcome for the .03 cents you just earned by doing this live chat.
Verified
What I earn here is love. Money not required. Take your 3 cents back, friend.
Sorry I can’t stay longer. @Martin – you rule! thanks for stopping by!
@Martin Serious question….do you stay in contact with a lot of people you’ve worked with? Specifically, what is Natasha Melnick up to these days?
Verified
Yes. Not her, for some reason. I don’t know where she is but I hope she’s well.
@Martinstarr: If you could put anything random or weird into your contract for a show or film, what would it be? Has to be an Ostrich for you to ride from trailer to the set right?
Verified
No. Ostrich from car to trailer. Two alligators pulling a rickshaw from trailer to set.
Do you eat taco bell or McDonald’s always wondered if famous people eat fast food or ramen noodles lol
Verified
Eaten neither for many years now. The bell still appeals to me when I’m not sober. I lied. We tried the Dorito taco on set during the second season of NTSF. I enjoyed it (though it was cold) while few others seemed to like it as much.
Anyone who doesn’t worship Doritos Locos tacos should be punched in the coccyx.
If you had to do a nude scene, would you make the crew members get naked too like Lindsay Lohan? Follow-up question: Lindsay Lohan, what’s up with that, am I right?
Verified
No.
Right.
@MartinStarr Now that you’re a big Hollywood star(r), is it complicity legal to hit babies with your car a la Lindsey Lohan, or just an unwritten rule?
Verified
Not something I’m fully aware of, yet. Today is going to be an interesting test.
@MartinStarr: Who’s your favorite person to get stoned with?
Verified
I don’t smoke no more. But if I did, probably Evan Goldberg
Could you do a contest on twitter where they could like win a follow by you @martinstarr
Verified
Sure. What if I did a contest on twitter for a free opportunity to see my band play…
Been thinking about how to do that. One day.
You can’t let that one just slide by.
What is your band’s information? Name, website, et cetera.
Verified
They’re called Common Rotation. My name is Martin Starr. So far, that’s pretty much how the billing goes. Martin Starr and Common Rotation. But that may change. We’re in a growth process
Thanks for the warning that Bill Haverchuck/Roman DeBeers/Professor Cligoris/Stu Pompeu/Joel/Schmendrick/Theo/the awesome Martin Starr was going to be here. I feel like I missed it all.
Shit!
Verified
Nope. You missed nothing
I caught up, but it is nice to get the affirmation.
Question we ask all our guests: If you had to choose between a mermaid with a super-sexy head and torso, but a fish tail (ie, no legs or vagina), or a mermaid with the head of a fish but the body of the most gorgeous bikini model, which would you choose?
If we ever get John Stamos on here don’t ask him that it might be insulting since he once married Option 2.
@Martin follow up: would you rather be thrown into a pool of bees or be sodomized by a bear with razors on his penis?
Does #2 take it up the butt? Pun intended. Also what kind of fish? Because a catfish is a huge turnoff. Because chicks with mustaches are a huge turn-off for me.
@Martin in all seriousness you were on the only episode of Community to include 2 Annies. I am jealous.
Verified
If she still can talk and has all the character traits that are attractive to me then I’d go with the head of a fish so she could walk and not leave some snail trail everywhere we go.
I am glad this has become a staple question. Justin Halpern’s answer caused me to buy his book…. Good thing you don’t have a book coming out Martin.
What kind of music are you into and what bands / artist @MartinStarr
Verified
Bluegrass and hip-hop.
I should tell you now that I rap with a bluegrass band
Please tell me you like Trampled by Turtles
lol. Where can we watch you perform?
Verified
Around LA so far. I announce on Twitter when we play
@MartinStarr
I met you when you came to stay at my resort in Dahlonega, GA for a wedding. I was the super nervous guy at the front desk, and that was a huge surprise for me. Did you enjoy your stay?
Also, the Party Down cameo in Children’s Hospital is one of my favorite television moments of all time.
Verified
Nice! I appreciate that it didn’t go unnoticed.
I had a great time, thank you. That weekend didn’t go without a few awkward moments but that place was great to stay at and it’s always a good time seeing family.
@martin In the trailer for this season of NTSF:SD:SUV, I beleive I saw Alison Brie, Anziz Ansari and Ray Liotta all get punched in the face. Any chance they will be appearing as guest stars?
Verified
Absolutely! An amazing chance
What race would you consider the funniest?
a dolphin vs a black leprechaun. but that’s just me…
Verified
no idea, friend. Sorry
Tour de France, obvs.
When you saw this GIF, what was the first thing that went through your mind, other than, “I fucking hate JoshK”?
He’s got the moves like Jagger. First impression.
Verified
That’s me
@Martin, if a young person wants your life when they grow up, what advice would you give them besides watch a lot of Star Trek?
@martin what’s the likelihood of anything happening in the future with Freaks and Geeks? Also just wanted to say I saw Adventureland solely cause you were in it.
Verified
I hope you liked it.
I don’t think anything
So… seriously… Guttenberg is awesome, right?
do you even have to ask?
Verified
Guttenberg is SOOOOO awesome!
@Martin/Roman: If “Serpent in the Mirror” was going to be made, but only if it starred Kyle in the lead role, would you still sell the rights? And if you had your choice of director, who would it be?
Verified
Absolutely NOT!
But eventually yes.
A lot of director meetings would help decide
@Martin: In the Freaks and Geeks episode where you made out with Vicki Applebee, my wife got all turned on because the nerd was getting the cheerleader….anything pleasant about Joana Garcia’s breath or saliva content you can share? Also….it just occurred to me that you made out with Vicki Applebee and then went on to play Napplebee in Cheats. Has anyone ever pointed that out to you before? Also, does anyone else even remember that movie and does Matthew Lawrence really hate adopted kids or was he just acting?
Verified
Matt was acting and did a great job, by the by.
Joanna I recall being a splendid sport about the whole thing. Great breath and all else.
You’re the first.
@Martin Serious question….do you stay in contact with a lot of people you’ve worked with? Specifically, what is Natasha Melnick up to these days?
@martin: is it true that you were on the shortlist to play Hector Salamanca on Breaking Bad but they thought you brought a little too much swag to the role?
Verified
I have no idea. If so, nobody told me.
@Martin… Okay, I’ll just admit it — I’ve never seen NTSF:SD:SUV. For the benefit of myself and the others comedy nerds here who may not have seen it but loved your past stuff, can you tell us a little about it and why we should watch it?
Get the fuck out of here. NOW!
The answer, by the way, is: Paul Scheer’s hairpiece.
They run over Adam Scott with a lawnmower. That’s all you need to know
@OttoMan…SOLD!
Verified
Amazing people. I have an absolute blast working on it and I’m proud to get to be a part of it for two straight years now. Watch it, it’s funny.
I mean, come on. How could you not watch this?
@Martin if you could name your penis after a band what would it be?
“If you could”? Is this illegal?
Because if so, I need to have a talk with “Little Billy Squire.”
I’d personally go will “Bell Biv Devoe”
Verified
Brenton Wood
I assume I can go with a solo artist
@Martin: What cast member from Party Down made you laugh the most, offscreen?
+1 good question
Verified
Probably Adam. Or Ryan.
Martin – were you ever on set with Ryan Reynolds during Adventureland? If so, does he smell really nice? He looks like a guy who would smell nice.
A similar follow up question. How many people tried to slap that face off of Kristen Stewart?
Verified
No idea
@Martin Does is bother you that everyone on this forum is too damn lazy to address you as @MartinStarr?
Verified
Hadn’t given it a single thought.
And now that I have WTF?! How dare they!
Jokes
@Martin: Cup o’ noodle or Top Ramen? Why?
Verified
Ramen. No styrofoam. Not with my noodles, thank you.
@Martin how weird was the pan-sexual 3way with Rob Huebel?
Verified
Weird? Or awesome?
@Martin Jackal Onassis is my second favorite episode of Party Down. (Steve Guttenberg’s Birthday Party is the first, but whose isn’t?) When you received the script for the Jackal Onassis episode, what was your reaction to Roman’s transformation? Was the Jackal Onassis wardrobe fun to wear or a pain in the ass?
Verified
I couldn’t wait to bring it to life. So much fun walking around looking like that. Hard to walk at times but super fun
@Martin – What’s your opinion of Kristen Stewart, having worked with her on Adventureland?
Mods, please delete.
Verified
A wonderful girl. I respect her tremendously and had so much fun working with her. She was like a little sister to me while we worked on Adventureland.
@Martin…Hottest sci-fi chick of all time? Aside from tri-titty alien in Total Recall…
Verified
You can’t take away the clear victor and expect me to answer with the second best.
Hey, don’t forget about the naked space vampire from Lifeforce!
@Martin Which was your favorite Freaks and Geeks episode or scene? Which was your favorite episode or scene featuring Bill?
@Martin: Is your grandpa super cool?
Verified
I don’t know… I enjoyed that experience so much and was lucky to have it. Top to bottom, some of the most talented and thoughtful/compassionate people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with.
My grandpa was super fucking cool, yes
@Martin: Can you direct me to the bathroom?
Verified
You’re there now
Hmm, that explains the smell.
@Martin: Being in shows with both Lizzy Caplan and Alison Brie separately and then a movie with both of them at the same time, how did you handle that? I would be an awkward, emotional mess.
Follow up question, could I have Lizzy Caplan’s number?
Verified
No you may not.
I love working with both of those wonderful women. I’d do it again and most definitely will.
@Martin was the Halloween freaks and geeks the first time you dressed up like a woman?
Verified
Yup
@Martin: Who would win in a fight between a duck and a fully sentient baseball glove?
Verified
Glove
@Martin Have you seen Rampart?
Verified
No, sorry
Don’t be sorry.
I haven’t seen it either. But Woody Harrelson says it’s good.
@Martin: Do you fart in front of your significant other? Or does your idea of love diverge from Bill’s?
@Martin: Can you give us a status update on the Party Down movie? Expected shoot/release dates? It’s for my prestigious blog, sir.
Verified
I wish I could but there, unfortunately, isn’t an update. The writer folks are working on it. Everyone and their mother should contact Rob and John and Dan and tell them you want this ASAP.
