Sons of Anarchy returned last night with an hour-and-a-half season premiere that saw Kurt Sutter pick up on some loose threads from last season, and lay out the rivalries for the fifth season. Say what you want about Sutter, but he doesn’t pull punches, as last night’s episode contained one of the more grisly killings in television history, plus Jimmy Smits’ ass, Clay’s oxygen tank, and maybe the closest thing to Gus Fring television will provide us for a while (unless, of course, Gus Fring himself returns). Let’s get right to it, shall we?
1. The One Niners have been something of a secondary rivalry for SAMCRO up until now. Tig’s hasty decision to kill Veronica Pope in a drive by at the end of last season changes all that. The war with the Niners looks to be the main focus of the season, and while it’s still early, they may end up being the most menacing of all of SAMCRO’s rival factions.
2. Speaking of the Niners, Harold Perrineau’s Damon Pope does not f*** around. He’s certainly in keeping with Kurt Sutter’s affinity for the quiet, cool, and collected big bads (see also Adam Arkin’s Ethan Zobelle). The way he exacted revenge on Tig for his murder of Veronica — throwing Tig’s daughter into a pit of corpses, then setting her on fire while Tig watched — may have been the most violently upsetting death on the series so far. I’m actually glad we barely knew Dawn, as that death would’ve been much more difficult to handle if we’d actually been attached to the character. It was cold, but I love that afterward, Damon Pope had some ice cream with the kids.

Meanwhile, I think Tig may be broken.

3. Pope certainly has echoes of Breaking Bad’s Gus Fring — a cool businessman who wants to distance himself from the criminal activity — and if Pope is Fring, that would make his henchman, played by Billy Brown (who we’ve seen a lot of lately in Dexter and FX’s Lights Out) his Mike Ehrmentraut. I think he’s going to be a very effective Ehrmentraut, too. Poor Darnell got a bullet in the head for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. We hardly knew you, Darnell.

4. The rivalry between Clay and Jax obviously hasn’t gone away. In the showdown between the two after Clay revealed that he’d killed Piney, Sutter returned to some familiar SAMCRO dialogue: “What’s your play?” “What’s your play?” I don’t know what Clay is up to, yet, but my guess is that he’s trying to court alliances within SAMCRO. If Jax stumbles, Clay will be at the ready to take back control. What’s for certain is that Bobby — who has taken on the role of SAMCRO’s VP — isn’t about to side with Clay. Tig is Clay’s best chance at a power play.

5. Danny Trejo and the Galindo cartel still feel extraneous, something narratively only necessary to keep Clay in the club. So far, they’ve only served to remind us of the too-easy resolution to the end of last season. (I still can’t see Trejo without seeing his head on a turtle).

I have a feeling that the group of home invaders includes Jeff Winger. Or I’m just itching to see him on the show already.
All I know is one of them is sans leg. Couldn’t recall any past characters missing legs so I guess it will be someone new.
The leg guy is one of the nomads who just got voted into the club. It’s the one who put his leg up on the other guy’s shoulder at church.
The preview for the season looked fantastic, with the prison feud being a significant obstacle. But God, please just stop bringing Drea de Matteo back. PLEASE.
Hopefully Tara kills her.
Or plants heroin on her.
That would be an awfully “Tara” thing to do. Passively aggressively get Jax to kill her.
@Omar best case scenario they kill each other. Tara’s bitter housewife hing is getting old.
**Blah, I’m smoking weed in the bathtub and turning off the baby moniter, blah**
I know Padilla didn’t know it at the time, but Gemma is technically a GMILF.
And fuck Peg-Leg Pete or whatever his name is if he killed Unser. Unser’s cool.
Greg The Peg, right? That was strange.
Yeah. Maybe it’s part of Clay’s play? Get the former Nomads to attack Sons-affiliates in Charming so it looks like Jax can’t protect the city any more, so they’ve got to vote Clay back in as the President? It would be stupid, but not the stupidest thing that’s been done on the show.
That theory could be spot on.
Fucking Hell!!
I just had to go back and watch that scene again. I didn’t even catch the Greg-the-Peg thing when he kicked his leg up.
That theory about Clay totally makes sense.
Greg the fuckin Peg. Of Course. THere are way too many one off guys to remember on this fucking show.
I wonder how they develop Jax cerebrally, will he keep being a guy that unknowingly fucks guys like Opie and Tara all while being mindfucked by Gemma and Clay? Or will he develop into a bad ass leader of a gang capable of some Heisenberg shit.
It took me a minute to piece that together in my mind, but seeing the fake foot and the same shoe that was shown while “church” was being held to vote in the NOMADS… it has to be them doing the invasions and at Clay’s request…
The episode was pretty tremendous overall. Hopefully the season can keep that intensity rolling…
I bet Clay set the whole thing up with Mike from Lost to get control of SAMCRO. Or he et the NOMADS loose in Charming.
Jimmy Smitts totally roofied Gemma.
Well I can’t say I have seen a woman burned alive on TV before, and now I have.
Tara needs to die this season, she is the worst
The roofie thing is definite. That has to play out with huge twists because Kurt wants his wife to win an Emmy for this season. So Jimmy is obviously up to something of his own and will turn on Gemma after he’s done using her for whatever.
I was totally think “ROOFIE, so obvious” during that whole exchange. Not sure what that says about me.
I don’t hate Tara, she’s a normal person in an abnormal world. She’s necessary to keep showing Jax’s good side and to remind people how fucked up the Sons’ world really is.
it was the way that woman that was working the counter that the whore shoppe looked at Smitts that was the tell.
And I refuse to call Jimmy Smitts by his characters name, he’s Jimmy Goddamn Smitts!
Well I can’t say I have seen a woman burned alive on TV before, and now I have.
Just call her Dawn of Arc. Speaking of, man but Leelee Sobieski used to be hot:
I actually felt that based on what Tara said to Gemma about her reeking of alcohol and weed in the morning to which Gemma replied “I don’t do that in the morning” to me just said that Gemma is hitting the bottle real hard every night, easily getting blackout drunk and getting stoned out of her mind.
So while I wouldn’t put it past Sutter to pull the roofie twist, I also don’t think it is necessary to explain why Gemma doesn’t remember anything from meeting Nero.
I don’t know a lot about roofies or anything really but I thought they kind of knocked you out. She certainly looked like she was enjoying the sex and that doesn’t seem very roofie like to me.
Clay can’t ride anymore, Jax is the man in the club. He made a few big plays, if Clay goes for a power play Jax sicks Opie on him.
Clay is going to buy Pineys old Trike, then the Metamorphosis is complete. It’s like a Highlander thing, kill the old dude and gain his powers.
Another reason why Clay can’t take control: Tig. He’s basically mindfucked Tig left and right, and left him with the “bitch work” as Tig put it. Tig’s fed up with Clay’s shit, he’ll blame Clay’s lie for the death of his daughter and he’s one of the four that knows that Clay ordered the hit on Donna. If Clay gets to be a problem, Jax will reel in Tig and turn him on Donna. The only way Clay gets Tig back in his corner is if he kills Pope and his body man. Person to kill those two dudes? I’m going Happy here.
@ dRail i was thinking that same thing about Clay becoming Piney. when i first saw Clay carrying around the oxygen tank the thought crossed my mind. and having Clay buy Piney’s trike is something i could see Sutter writing.
@Omar totally agree on the Tig part. i think this was the final straw for Clay and Tig. he was so messed up after killing Donna that it took him a while to get over it, until he finally came clean to Opie and got his ass beat. The way Tig answered “I dont know” the last time Clay asked him if they were ok shows us that Tig is already messed up over him killing the Pope girl for Clay, but him watching his daughter die bc of it is just too much, even for Tig. at this point i cant tell if it will be Jax, Opie, or Tig thats gonna kill Clay. it seems to be a position that more and more characters are lining up to fill
I really can’t see Opie selling the trike to Clay, Opie would probably kill Clay if he tried to buy it.
I’m very interested in seeing how Sutter pulls them all back. So many primaries seem f*cked in their current positions. Opie, Tig, even Jax.
I did like that Sutter found a creative way to dish out consequences for thoughtless mayhem that didn’t require killing off a main character (Tig) but didn’t come off as a cop out. Maybe he learned some lessons from last year’s finale. Geezus that scene was brutal.
How Brutal will Pope’s death be? Weston’s death was pretty tame, he was resigned to the fact that he was going to die sat his ass on the toilet and Jax put three in him…what’s Pope’s death going to be? He has to suffer brutally, right?
@Omar: my guess, they’ll drop him in a pit and make him watch the Season 3 DVDs. He’ll beg to be lit on fire.
Maybe we can finally see someone dragged to death behind a couple of bikes.
dRail, man I dunno. There was a black dude in Texas that got dragged behind a car to his death….that was a hate crime and seeing dudes that already have issues with race drag a black dude by a bike to his death may be a bit too much even for FX. Maybe he’ll be drawn and quartered.
True, true. Okay, Tiggs sets him and his bodyguard on fire, or runs him down with that Ice Cream truck.
I’m sticking with drawn and quartered. Still a bike death, still absolutely brutal, yet avoids skewing that racism line.
Tig said he wanted to cut off his head, maybe they’ll do that thing where they bury him up to his neck and drive a bike on either side of him dragging a chain. I swear back in Season 1 they set just such a thing up but pulled away at the last second.
A bigger series wide question: Is Jax really an anti-hero? I mean he’s a criminal, but a show like this is where the gangster is the good guy. What evil has he really done? Other TV anti-heroes have actually done some really fucked up shit. Walt let Jesse’s girlfriend die and poisoned a child, Boyd blew up a fucking church, Nancy consistently uses others to her advantage, and Dexter has a murderous rage he can’t control. What’s Jax’s big bad thing? He’s an outlaw, but he had good relationships with the younger Hale and Unser. He seems to be okay with Roosevelt and the Cartel CIA guys, so he’s at odds with the law, but he doesn’t seem to be particularly immoral.
Fuck you dude. Im still watching BBad season 4!
He’s killed a few people. Including an FBI agent. Thats some serious shit.
“The scene” was really hard to watch but I’m glad that Sutter is pushing boundaries right out of the gates for this season. With all of the storylines being laid out already idk how this season can slow down at any point, though I do hope the whole prison thing doesn’t last long. I kinda want to see Tig go murder crazy this season after that, but in line with his character I’m sure he will be reigned in somehow for the better of the club.
I want Linc Potter back
WAAAALLLLLLTTTTT!!!
I’m sorry, but that was the only thing I could think of when Pope first appeared.
I suddenly lost that image once he set Dawn on fire though.
I told myself to give it at least three episodes before I started making complaints that I couldn’t not see Walt’s dad. Virtually impossible in the premiere.
Yeah. Completely changed in my mind after last night, so I will now have no problem not seeing him as Michael.
….aaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaa…..
I can’t not see him in drag from Romeo + Juliet.
Problem with this last line:
“..so it would be fitting if Sutter wrote him out to fan the flames of the Niner/SAMCRO rivalry.”
Don’t you think the guy with the peg leg is the Nomad guy who was voted in to Samcro? The same one that put his foot up on the prospects shoulder.
If so, clearly he is working under Clay’s orders.
No pointing guns at babies; would not bang.
Horseshit. Line of the night was:
“Don’t worry he really didn’t want to be in charge.”
Tig is going to kick some major ass!
Unless he dies.
I feel like Sutter’s writing/storytelling is spot-on and very good except there’s always one thing during the season that ruins the whole thing (Season 2 is exception)
Yeah, except for Season 2, every other season has ended with me being like “ohhh man, he totally screwed the pooch on the ending”
I’m hoping he doesn’t do that again, but even if he does, I doubt it will stop me from watching as long as he still kicks off the seasons as bad ass as this one.
One thing I learned from Ryan Hurst, he goes by @RamboDonkeyKong on Twitter
best twitter name ever.
that dude is so much cooler than I’ll ever be
WWWAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLTTTTTTTTTTT
Man…Pope is a lot colder than they let on in this episode.
