Entertainment Weekly has the scoop on what the season four premiere of Community, which airs October 19, will look like. According to the article, fans should expect a Hunger Games tribute, which, yes, is a reference to The Hunger Games and I will now hoist myself up the nearest flagpole by my Taylor Swift panties.
When the Greendale student records seem to be lost, the Dean (Jim Rash) stages a Hunger Games-like competition to determine enrollment in a class called The History of Ice Cream. (Which raises the question: There’s actually a class at Greendale called The History of Ice Cream? “Ice cream is something that people eat every day and they probably don’t know its origin story,” deadpans McHale. “F— you and your elitist I-don’t-need-to-know-about-my-frozen-treats-and-where-they-came-from attitude.”)
Jeff not only competes in the games, he even performs an elaborate tango with Dean Pelton, who dons multiple dresses in the episode. “He will repulse and arouse you all at once,” notes McHale. “Mostly repulse.” McHale also offers this tease about another part of the premiere: “It is an homage to something that kids in the late ’80s and early ’90s watched on Saturday mornings.” (Via)
I can hear Dan Harmon scoffing, “It should have been Battle Royale” from here.

As ever, it’s important to note that the man in a wig and a dress above, surrounded by shirtless male unicorns, won an Oscar this year.

Paintball arrows?
*crosses fingers*
I love both of these things, so yay!
Annie Edison = Annie Cresta?
… I really hope that one of y’all gets that.
in with the first “trying too hard” comment
As in “Community is trying too hard”? Because I agree.
Community has always tried too hard. People are just pissed off because now it’s trying too hard without Dan Harmon.
No I think it’s a new level of trying too hard now. Inspector Spacetime convention? C’mon!
Jim Rash looks like Tina Fey trying to look like a drag queen.
Well, have you ever seen them together?
My girlfriend thinks it’s more Mayim Bialik.
“It is an homage to something that kids in the late ’80s and early ’90s watched on Saturday mornings.”
Hulk Hogan’s Rock and Wrestling?
That cartoon taught me racism. I was gonna say Heathcliff.
If they want to spoof the Hunger Games, Abed should put his camera in a paint shaker.
The Me So Hungee Games
But….most of the shows actual demographic probably didn’t see that movie.
But they are aware of it and what a parody is.
But, Taco: if you know “of” a Michael Jackson song, but you’ve never heard it, the Weird Al version won’t be as funny.
True, but hearing what a song is about and hearing what a book/movie is about are very different. Who doesn’t have a pretty good idea of what the Hunger Games is?
Its better to be able to laugh and know what a reference is referencing, rather than to not laugh and suspect that something is some sort of reference. Pretty striaghtforward, really.
I didn’t see My Dinner with Andre, but Critical Film Studies was still a great episode.
That being said, something doesn’t feel right about this.
See, they used to do things like Space Odyssey, 2001 but now we’ve resorted to Hunger Games…
I’m guessing its really a Double Dare parody.
American Gladiators? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
Ugh… Community is good with subtle parody. I liked it better when the spoofs happened organically. Plus, the Hunger Games was a terrible movie.
Who am I kidding… I’m gonna watch it all.
Gotta be Saved by the Bell. McHale as Zack Morris – PREPPY.
Annie as Kelly Kapowski? I might faint.
I think I’m gonna watch it first before I play the “Trying to Hard” card. Plus.. Jim Rush in a dress makes the world a better place.
Rash. Apologies.
I hope the whole thing is done in awful close-up shaky cam
The Hunger Deans lol
But really it does kind of suck that they went from parodying classic films to parodying what’s hot right now.
I miss Dan Harmon already. Well I missed him when he first got fired but this just escalates it,
Battle Royale is a pretty legit book. For real, you guys.
reason this encouraging: hooray creativity still exists or so it seems and it wont be simply ‘the gang hangs out’ and turn into some form of Friends: The Community College Years… my ultimate fear.
reason this sucks: the what’s hot right now parody def feels forced as opposed to lampooning the classics.
now who brought up the Saved By The Bell themed episode because it scarily works out personality wise…
Winger = Morris
Troy (well, early Troy when he was more the high school athlete guy early in the show) = Slater
still works cause…
Annie = Kelly…. and Annie liked both Troy and Jeff
Abed = Screech
Britta = Becky
Shirley = Lisa… you know just cause.
Pierce = ummmm, Max?
Dean = Mr. Belding
Did you mean Britta as Jessie Spano?
And Pierce would obviously be Johnny Dakota.
I really think Dean should be the Riddler. on the show, not in a movie.
DEAN ME THIS, CAPED CRUSADER
I was thinking Saved By The Bell as well.
“I can hear Dan Harmon scoffing, “It should have been Battle Royale” from here.”
It should have been. Hunger Games can suck a million dicks.
