Game of Thrones writer Vanessa Taylor recently spoke about the show’s upcoming third season on Jeff Goldsmith’s Q&A podcast, specifically how viewers should expect something more cinematic and less “conventional” when the series returns not soon enough.
I’ve actually been learning a particular lesson this season. My bosses [Weiss and Benioff] seem to be becoming more visual storytellers. All of the episodes of the third season seem to open with a particularly cinematic opening. And they’re less about clever dialogue and transition and more about these huge cinematic…just the visuals of it all. And so I’m really learning a different way of writing from that. Because I think it’s quite subtle and I feel like, by contrast, the writing of the second season was a bit more conventional. (Via)
Yes, that episode with the multi-million dollar boat fight with wildfire, an imp cutting a dude’s leg off, a queen drinking herself stupid and talking about rape, and the prostitute talking to the girl who recently lost her dad because his head was chopped off was quite conventional. But point taken, Game of Thrones, assuming you leave at least a couple of Tyrion and Bronn back-and-forths. Or just give them a romantic spin-off series. Our Imp-ortant Year needs to be made. Dany can guest star as “Sexy Cheerleader #3.”
Also, here’s a photo of Peter Dinklage hanging out in a nightclub in Croatia:

I’m not sure how that random blurb about almost nothing translates into a headline announcing that they are basically eliminating a major character’s major trait, but it did get me to click on a link. Well done and fuck.
Yeah that blurb sounds like they are specifically trying to make more episodes like Blackwater
And yeah, weren’t any good Tyrion lines in that episode.
If “cinematic” = “B00BS then I’m all for it. If not, they can go fuck themselves.
So more showy less talky?
While I think they’ve done a great job translating the show to TV, after reading the books you can’t help but feel that every now and then a certain sense of epic scope is missing and it’s still just TV (even on HBO).
But, the first half of the third book isn’t very battle heavy… It’s more contingent on dialogue and character development.
“Well, well, well… lookee here. Seems we got us a reader!”

God forbid that HBO show make a show that’s more character or dialogue driven rather than gratuitous sex and violence (not that I have anything against gratuitous sex and violence.)
This is all True Blood‘s fault.
I don’t think “conventional” could be used to describe what is depicted in book 3 anyway. This season is going to be chaos and I can’t wait.
Having read the books they are finally getting to the parts were you see less of Tyrion and maybe that is why. Either way expect tits, tits, and some more tits.
I don’t know about boobs, but the eunuch count is about to skyrocket.
More sexposition and damn the critics!
Does this mean we’ll get some sort of LOTR-style helicopter shots of Roz going down on some other whore?
Wonder if we’ll get The Red Wedding as the season finale or if that will have to wait until season four? They’re splitting A Storm of Swords into two seasons for TV because it’s so long and there’s so much going on.
Red Wedding ends first half of book 3, Joffrey’s wedding ends second half.
If they want it to be truly cinematic, why don’t they co-screen it in CINEMA’S, additionally to tv. I believe that this epic adventure deserves a big screen airing as it is the most globally pirated series in tv history and the funds raised could be re-invested into furthering the production values. I would love the pre-pay an entire season to watch it in a cinema on a week night, have dinner and enjoy the cultural friendship of other passionate GoTers. My suggestion has real potential to revolutionise and integrate tv and movies as the fan base is global. And the financial rewards endless and global. Iwannaseethisonthebigscreen!
