Entertainment Weekly has picked up on a big scoop for this week’s episode. According to their source, “a very important person within the SAMCRO family will die.” Who will it be? EW doesn’t know, and obviously, Kurt Sutter and Co. are not saying. However, EW claims to know someone in the SOA camp to who has confirmed six SAMCRO members who “may be on the chopping block.” (Italics mine)
Here’s the six, and the odds of one of them dying (spoilers if you actually trust my theories).
Wayne Unser (5-1) — Unser seems the most obvious, if only because he’s the most expendable character in the SAMCRO family right now, what with being old and having cancer. However, he just began an investigation into the home invasions which looks to form a season-long arc. Moreover, any good writer who has a character with cancer — in remission or not — will bring it back before the character dies. That way, there’s two forces of death converging, which would create the most suspense. I’ll give Sutter the benefit of the doubt that he understands that.
Tig Trager (15-1) — Absolutely not. If Damon Pope was going to kill him, he would’ve killed him in the opening episode of the season. Tig has some major comeuppance coming, and it’s not like Kurt Sutter to take that sort of revenge away from a character. As you recall, he let Opie pull the trigger on June Stahl at the end of season three. You’d imagine he’d give Tig the same opportunity with Damon Pope. Tig is the most safe of the bunch, I think.
Clay Morrow (10-1) — He’s half dead anyway, can’t ride his motorcycle, and is on the outs with half the club, but he’s also one of the lead characters on the show. That doesn’t make him immune, of course, but if Sutter was going to take out Clay, it would’ve been a lot better to have done so at the end of last season. It could be that he’s compensating for that anti-climax, but then again, SAMCRO still needs Clay for their deal with the Irish. It doesn’t really make narrative sense at this point, especially with the home invasion subplot and a lot of unresolved questions with Gemma. Plus, he’s Claudius. Claudius isn’t wasted in the middle of the story.
Juice (8-1) — Maybe. But again, Sutter had his chance last year when Juice tried to kill himself. But then again, Juice hasn’t really provided much this season. But then again, if you want maximum impact from a character death, you want that character to mean something. Juice is not involved in anything heavy right now, and he’s not really a big part of the intersecting story lines. It’s possible, but I don’t think so because a good writer will bring a character front and center before killing him.
Tara (10-1) — It’d be nice, wouldn’t it? Most of us would love to see Tara die. But, I don’t think it’s going to happen. Sons of Anarchy is clearly based on Hamlet, and it’s too early in the series (expected to end after season seven) for Ophelia to die. Unless, and this is important if Sutter is truly sticking with the Hamlet plotline: Tara isn’t Ophelia. Ophelia would actually be the daugther of one of Clay’s most trusted advisers. That would likely be Tig, which would mean that Fawn is the real Ophelia, in which case disposing of Tara would make sense. However, I don’t think that Sutter is going to remain that faithful to Hamlet. It would be cool, though, and it would fit with my theory that Jax and Tara got married in the last episode in order to create more sympathy for Tara before she got whacked.
Opie (2-1) — If it is any of the six fingered by EW, I’m sad to say that it’s likely Opie. Why? Well, technically — and this is a cheat — we can rule out Chibs and Tig, because they are seen in the still image with Joel McHale’s character, who hasn’t been introduced yet. It’s unlikely that he’ll be introduced in episode three because Chibs and Jax are in prison, therefore Tigs and Chibs must survive prison.
Who else is in prison with them? Opie. We also know there will be a showdown in prison with the Niners, in which Opie will be involved. It also makes the most narrative sense. This is how a writer’s mind works: Bring a character back into the fold, create as much sympathy for him as possible (which is why Opie punched out Eli to get into prison to protect Jax), and then pull the f***king rug out from underneath us. It also gives Jax — and all of SAMCRO — the biggest incentive to take their revenge upon Damon Pope. DO IT FOR OPIE. Plus, Opie has already settled with Lyla and arranged for her to have the kids. That’s pretty good foreshadowing.
Opie goes out a martyr, breaking out hearts in the process.

I say it has to be Unser. Maybe someone can with more
shits to givetime on their hands go back to Ryan Hurst’s Q&A post here looking for clues. That said, Sutter has said all along that he’s doing Hamlet here, and Opie has been set up as the Mercutio character since the beginning. How cool would it be to have a guy who actually played Mercutio order the hit.
Can’t be Unser yet. He’s investigating the break-ins, so he has to find something first before he gets killed. Once he realizes Clay is behind the break-ins, he’ll get his.
You assume that will take more than one episode. Also, Dustin assumes Sutter is a good writer. I take exception to both those assumptions.
That’s why my Otto mention is ridiculous. We all know the series will end with Otto being released and marrying Gemma.
Isn’t Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet? Surely Opie is Ophelia, right?
Clue the first: In response to a question about wanting to see more “Opie with a death wish from season 2″, Hurst says “It’s a relatively safe bet, that we will see shades of that again” – Hard to have a death wish when you are dead in prison.
Opie = Ophelia. Good fucking call Lobster Mobster.
You’re right, Lobster, I’m retarded. In my defense, I didn’t sleep much last night, there’s a pox in my house.
I predict opie gets strangled and then hung up in jail!
so who would be the horatio type character?
KidKimchee – that’s what I was wondering if we are assuming that Opie is Ophelia. Of course, there doesn’t have to be a direct parallel to every character and idea (What of dear Rosencrantz and Guildenstern?).
Or maybe Opie is actually Hamlet, and we’re just getting into the homage with Piney getting killed and Clay taking his role of “grizzled old dude with oxygen tank”. Maybe Clay will buy Piney’s trike, too.
Lobster- the response Hurst gave about Opie on a death wish trip was the question I asked and thanks for going back and finding that. I too feel that it would be way to early to kill off someone of Opie’s magnitude in terms of what he means to the show.
Then again, if they do kill him I will without a doubt have “flared nostrils” when that happens!
Hurst said that we should see “shades” of that again. That’s interesting wording on his part. What if his “shades” equaled punching out the cops to go to prison and going apeshit on some Niners before getting shivved? I don’t think that response rules him out. But with Sutter’s seeming inability to kill of major characters in the Samcro family, I personally think he’s okay.
I always figured Tara was the Horatio. Outsider to the court, just come back from studies abroad at the start of the play, Hamlet’s childhood friend…
Opie is Ophelia and Laertes both. Which means he should get to go crazy, commit suicide, and then fight Jax to the death. Of course, it also means Jax should have killed Piney (but then, Opie does seem to partly blame Jax for that).
Mercutio is Romeo and Juliet, not Hamlet.
If they have sense though, the home robbery subplot should pretty much be done and over with by the end next episode.
We already know whose been doing it, so it would be silly to stretch out Usner’s investigation any further unless they want to bore us.
I reckon Unser will put it together, so Clay will have to add another friend of SAMCRO to his body count. But maybe not before Unser can pass the message to Jax in the pen or Roosevelt.
I have a feeling this is more The Lion King than Hamlet…
Duchess – well, the whole speech in Hamlet about the man that eats of a fish that hath ate of a worm that hath ate of a king is basically The Circle of Life, so, yeah.
If it’s a SAMCRO member in prison, my money is on Happy.
Otherwise, I wouldn’t rule out Otto.
I hope not Happy, he’s rad. Him and Chuckie need to go on adventures.
I thought Happy, Bobby and Juice were the only ones not going to prison? Aside from Clay.
Better not be Happy. I am still hoping for a Happy, Bobby and Tig spin off.
I thought Happy was in the van with them. Either way, he’s just the only one that doesn’t have any sideplot right now.
Happy needs to end the series just covered in smiley faces. He needs to do all the murders.
Bobby, from heart attack….vice president dead, president locked up, who can run the club? Clay.
My money is on Opie. They better not touch Juice!
A spoiler’s not a spoiler unless there’s foreknowledge. Even a correct theory isn’t a “spoiler”.
You’d think so, but you should see some of the crazy whining people come out with. Dustin is just avoiding that bullshit.
You guys are giving Sutter way too much credit. There’s no way he kills Opie, no matter how much foreshadowing you may see… It’s episode 3. If someone as important as Opie dies, it would happen either at the start or end of a season (same goes for all the people you listed).
I’d put the odds on Otto at 1:1… Otto’s death eliminates the RICO allegations and SAMCRO walks free after 1 episode in prison.
You are probably right, but man, that would be disappointingly anticlimactic, which I suppose is Sutter’s M.O.
This makes a world of sense, plus IIRC Sutter has said in interviews how much he hates acting.
Good theory. I certainly don’t have one. I’m still reeling over Boardwalk Empire’s character death last episode so I’m having trouble focusing on Sons.
I thought this as well when I read the EW story yesterday. It just makes more sense and Bobby brought up the subject of his affair with Luann with the club lawyer on last week’s episode.
To the group- crazy lady in the office keeps telling me that she thinks John Teller is still alive. I said if he were alive we would know about it by now. Clay and Gemma have pretty much given all indications that he died in that motorcycle “accident”.
I think it’s Otto.
Romeo needs to keep the Sons out of the RICO trap, and the easiest way to do that is to off Otto.
Let’s not forget that Otto has requested an express lane to death row in exchange for the RICO charges against the club. This puts things into a more realistic perspective now that I think about it.
I don’t think killing Otto would be anti-climatic. It’s the third fucking episode of the season and we’re going ape shit over an EW quote. He’s still building the story and the climax. Them killing the member of SAMCRO that’s taken the most for the club creates a large degree of moral ambiguity for the Sons and Jax. Until now Jax really hasn’t fucked anyone over too hard lately, except Opie but he feels bad about that and wants to kill Clay as much as Opie.
Otto went to prison for the club, killed people in prison for the club, and he’s basically on death row for the club. Bobby Elvis fucked his wife, and he took it, the club let his wife die and that’s what set him off. Killing him would be quite the dickish move.
I was under the impression it had to be one of the six? Which Otto is not listed as.
“Palin Givens
Let’s not forget that Otto has requested an express lane to death row…”
That whole thing is hilarious because California effectively has no death penalty. Also, you cannot request quick execution, all you can do is waive all of your appeals, at least those that are not automatic. No one has been executed since at least 2006 and the moratorium is expected to be in effect at least until 2013. Only 13 people have been executed in CA since 1978. Sutter talked about his views on the death penalty in one of his Sutter Ink vids and he obviously doesn’t know that his state doesn’t execute anyone anymore.
I will be sad when that one nomad guy who isn’t Greg the Peg is tragically gunned down.
The Nomads might as well be wearing red patches.
Ryan Hurst’s performance is the only great reason to keep watching this show. If they kill him now I’m going to JAXBROWALK right out of this show.
Right there with ya
It’s definitely not Juice.
It was subtle, but Roosevelt made a comment to him in episode one (I think it was) asking if he had any information for him or something to that effect, referencing him being a bit snitchy.
His relationship with Roosevelt is going to save SAMCRO’s ass at some point this season.
Agreed.
What do you think, law enforcement put a super secret invisible protective shield on Juice? If someone walks up to Juice and stabs him in the neck or shoots him in the back of the head, even considering all the tv and even SAMCRO-specific tropes out there, what is Roosevelt going to do about it? I don’t understand your comment in any other context except as the wish of a naive child.
@Nickel- I understand the comment to mean that there is more story left to tell with Juice, not that he has a protective shield or anything.
They gotta kill somebody. The longer the show goes on my biggest gripe is that the primary characters are seemingly unkillable and reality goes further and further out the window the longer that goes on.
Not sure what it says about me but I LOVE bro walk and I’m not sure if it’s ironic love or not.
When they introduced the new members to the club in the season opener I thought you might as well put them in red shirts.
I hate to say it, but Opie probably makes the most sense because he’s the most likeable character on the show. What a better way for Sutter to punch audiences in the gut than kill off the most likeable character?
I’ve got Clay by suicide.
Just gonna lean on this shelf, nothin’ to it, yep, just gonna recline my torso and support it on this shelf, easiest thing in the world
OH GOD, WHY CAN’T I LEAN PROPERLY?
WHO THE FUCK HAS VIDEO TAPES IN THIS DAY AND AGE? BLARG, ANGER!
WUSHHAT?! “SEX AN’A CITY” UN BLU-RAY?! FOOKIN’ AHNIMULS.
Chibs was especially incomprehensible in this episode.
He’s probably just really drunk. Like, drunk for an Scottish guy, not American drunk.
We need Chibbs subtitles pronto.
Part of what he said during the marriage scene wasn’t English if that makes anyone feel any better.
(I always watch tv with the captions on, so I hadn’t noticed if he was less comprehensible or not.)
If it’s Opie, I’m out*
*meaning, I will reluctantly watch every episode for the rest of the show’s run.
my thoughts exactly
“*meaning, I will reluctantly watch every episode…”
Exactly
Wow! Those new badges sure are awesome!
I don’t think it’s Otto. So, must be opie
This is the downside to DVR episode two in hopes of having a movie-esque experience by watching eps. two and three back-to-back. Gotta stay off the netz….. Based off the first episode, I hoped they’d let the truth about Piney come out before they offed Opie.
Honestly, I don’t even care who it is…as long as it’s not Opie! Don’t do it Sutter!
Isn’t the RICO case partly due to Juice snitching as well? No way they off him yet. Otto makes the most sense with his death penalty moving up.
Yeah, Otto provided past stuff and Juice has the current connection, which was mentioned when Jax and Calamity Jane Lawyer had the bordello discussion.
why does everyone want Tara dead …. she freaken awesome
unfortunately after just watching the new wtfSutter…he did not give it away but it does sound like Opie
my hubby thinks Otto but he is not “a major character” as kurt puts it…
OPIE IS OPHELIA! OPIE IS OPHELIA, GODDAMMIT! I’m sorry if that seems extreme, but I can’t help myself that after 4 seasons people still think Tara=Ophelia. Hamlet doesn’t have a love interest. At all. Ophelia would like to think Hamlet loves her, but his commitment to pretending to be mad kind of shuts down that route for her. Not to mention, Ophelia is driven to madness by the death of her father and the loss of people she cared about (in various ways).
Now, on the show…guess who has a father who just died? Guess who’s lost MULTIPLE family members throughout the series, with an incredible amount of stress placed on them? Guess who’s had a person they were friends with as kids systematically drive them away through ill treatment (even if they won’t take the fucking hint)? That’s right, Opie. Because Opie is Ophelia. It’s even in the fucking name. OPIE/OPHELIA/OPIE. Opie is Ophelia.
Anyways, sorry about all that. For the odds, I’m going with Otto “redeems” himself in prison by protecting SAMCRO against the Niners at the cost of his own life. And Opie kills himself (possibly as soon as they get out of prison, but I’m betting it stews for an episode) after Pope kills Opie’s kids. (Or at least one of them anyways)
yeah I want Tara to die or Gemma, I’ve been pissed off at them since the beginning
Count me in the ‘Jeez, I hope it’s Tara camp’. Otto seems the likeliest bet, though
For the author to claim that Juice hasn’t “provided much” and that he’s not part of too many important story lines this year is ridiculous and quite frankly, ignorant. Juice is the source of the “new” (i.e., within the past ten years, as required by statute) evidence in the potential federal RICO case. If Juice goes, RICO goes. If RICO goes, the leverage Romeo and the Galindo Cartel have on SAMCRO is weakened or eliminated. That is the entire basis of the show right now, from a criminal law standpoint. That is “nothing much”??
Also, supposedly it has been “confirmed” that it’s one of the characters profiled in this article that is getting killed, so all of you guessing Otto and other characters not on the list are obviously not paying attention.
I think it’s Wayne. This will bring the charming P.D. Into the home invasion plot, which would uncover clays involvement?
Opie has long been my favorite character… he does make a lot of sense as the one who dies. Would likely be in some kind of helping Jax survive an attack from the 9ers kind of way in jail. Hopefully that isn’t the case, but it fits.
Tara needs to go… just saying. She has been overly annoying since last season.
Just doesn’t seem like it will be Wayne… but I guess since he isn’t obvious it would make sense. I don’t think his death would be the shock to the system that Sutter seems to be alluding to in his recent tweet:
kurt sutter @sutterink
if you DVR SOA tomorrow nite, stay off of the internet until you watch. it will be spoiled. treat it like a sporting event. #whodiesonsoa #SOAFX
I keep reading its a major person on the show.
I dont think unser happy chucky or phil qualify.
It has to be one of the stars or Sutter is like desperate to publicity.
Way to nail it, Dustin.
SOA!
