8. Jax Needs Proof — No action can be taken until Jax has proof. This is why he hatches the plan to play Gemma against Clay. But my question is this: WHY THE F**K DO YOU NEED PROOF? Jax knows that Clay killed Opie’s first wife. He knows that Clay killed his father. He knows that Clay killed Piney. He knows that Clay tried to have Tara killed. He knows that Clay is behind the home invasions, which resulted in Gemma and Unser getting beaten to a pulp. Bobby also knows most of these things. It doesn’t matter what Tig knows because Tig is in Jax’s back pocket. Chibs was there when Frankie indicted Clay. WHAT ELSE DOES JAX NEED?
This is not a cop-and-lawyer show. There are no Fourth Amendment protections. There’s no burden of proof to overcome. Jax has taken out a lot of people for a lot less, and most of SAMCRO already knows that Clay is a murdering, thieving asshole. Who the hell does he have left to convince? Happy? Filthy Phil? JUST KILL HIM FOR F**K’S SAKE. I get it that Jax wants to consolidate power, but the lengths he’s willing to go to demonstrate what a sack of sh*t Clay is has become absurd.
9. Clay’s Sole Ally — Poor Juice. The kid unloads one secret, and Clay burdens him with another. “What we shared here makes us even. Honest. We’re connected.” No, not if Clay is dead. I hope Juice escapes, although killing the guy at this point may finally give him some peace.
10. Eli’s Role — So, Eli thinks Frankie Diamond is behind everything, and is willing to sacrifice poor Juice to take his revenge on Frankie. If Jax turns Frankie over to Eli, Eli turns the informant over to Jax. Eli gets the satisfaction of killing Frankie (which he deserves), leaving Jax with the satisfaction of killing Clay. Except that he won’t. Because Jax insists on putting Clay on trial, and Clay will get the case thrown out on a technicality. “You can’t kill me! You didn’t read me my Miranda rights.”
Oy. This week’s episode frustrated me.
Bonus: 11. Nero Pushed to the Sidelines — Nero is kind of hanging out at this point, giving up a wad of cash to Frankie, trying to convince Jax to get out of the drug business, and dealing with Clay, who is threatening Nero if he gets in the way of he and Gemma’s relationship. Meanwhile, Nero is also in the unenviable position of having to defend Gemma. If I were Nero, I’d walk away.
I’m with Lannister. Burn them all, but spare Juice.

This has been such an annoyingly frustrating season so far. I really was hoping the Jax vs. Clay saga would be put on the back burner this season for something fresh and interesting.
Why did Clay bother telling Juice he was behind the break ins? He already had dirt on Juice and it served no purpose except to give Juice dirt on Clay.
False sense of security that he won’t use that info against him. It will also keep Juice in his camp giving him at least one ally since all the others are on the lam or dead.

I’ll be sad when Clay dies, unless Sutter saves that for the end of the show. Ron Perlman’s pretty far and away the best actor on this show, even moreso now that Hurst is gone. Also I’m missing Lincoln Potter too. That dude was like the Moriarty to the MC’s Holmes. Bring that sucka back.

Counterpoint: this was the best episode of SoA so far this season. A bunch of plotlines finally started to come together, rather than Sutter just throwing out the next shock bit that came into his mind to try to keep people talking.
As for why Jax needs proof of Clay’s misdeeds, keep in mind the reason why Clay is still alive; Jax needs Clay in order to get the Irish to sell guns to the cartel through SoA because the Irish think Jax is too hotheaded to lead. Without Clay, the Irish deal goes away, and the cartel pulls the pin on the RICO case. Until Jax finds out about/deals with Juice (my guess: Roosevelt tosses out Juice’s evidence in exchange for getting to put a bullet in Frankie Diamonds once the club catches him) and the club finds a way to get Otto to recant (I guess by Tara wearing his ex-wife’s crappy perfume?), he needs Clay to avoid getting taken down by RICO. We know that there is no shortage of reasons for Jax to kill Clay, and that a number of people in the club have at least bits and pieces of knowledge about what Clay’s done. I think the evidence may very well be for the Irish, so that when the time comes to off Clay, Jax can show the Irish that they misjudged Clay’s character and Jax’s leadership potential, thereby keeping the pipeline for Irish guns in place for as long as the club needs it.
As for how the Nero/Pope relationships are shaping up; I think those will be the two alternatives for Jax going forward. Either he gets himself and SoA deeper into drugs and guns, becomes more ruthless and tries to become Charming’s Pope, or he gets himself and the club out of that stuff and becomes more peaceful/reasonable like Nero seems. I get the feeling that Nero seems too good to be true in a lot of ways; I wouldn’t be surprised if it comes back that he actually killed off Ashley Tisdale’s character and is much more of an asshole than he seems, leading to Jax losing faith in the path Nero preaches and getting pushed towards becoming more like Pope.
Lastly, Sutter has so far this season burned Tig’s daughter alive, killed off Opie in a brutal prison beating, had Nero’s bangers require a tit and a finger as proof of Ashley Tisdale’s death, had Tig kill the prison guard’s wife in cold blood while Jax smashed the guard’s head in with a snow globe playing “It’s a Small World” and had Jax kill the second shooter in cold blood this week, and you’re calling him out for not having the balls to kill Abel, a kid who’s been through some of the most traumatic shit on the show? And you like the show Girls? Dude, you are one seriously fucked up individual.
I agree. I thought this was the best one of the season too. I’m sorry it didn’t have everyone’s favorite Justified actor dressed as a BDSM tranny.
The episode did a good job of moving along some necessary plotlines, but at the same time Sutter abandoned some plotlines that would have been more interesting and difficult to continue with.
Also I don’t think Chibs/Bobby find Jax “childish” more or less one pissed off motherfucker that isn’t to be fucked with. “Using tragedy to get an advantage.” As to the main plotline with Pope, there’s two more seasons left so much like Hank couldn’t die this early in Breaking Bad they have to keep some viable endgame plots open. Perhaps an endgame is Jax taking over Pope’s business and killing him. Arguably the most uncomfortable scene in the entire show was Pope fucking over Tig, a guy most people have a hard time with, maybe the show ends with Jax letting Tig brutally murder Pope and Jax putting one in the back of Tig’s head paraphrasing my mainest man Slim Chuck:

It’s almost as if Sutter is setting it up so that anyone who gets offed, the audience will and will not feel sympathy for them. Pretty much everyone on the show (with a couple of exceptions) has done shit that’s over the top setting them all as anti-heroes.
I decided I’m going to stop picking apart the holes in Sutters writing and just enjoy some violence. For the middle seasons where things were near unwatchable, this season is surprisingly decent.
I love the fact that most of the characters were anti-heroes. But, at this point, do ANY of them have ANY redeeming qualities? They’re all douchebags. Kill ‘em all!!
I miss having a character to focus all of my hate and bad wishes towards (Stahl). If Pope is supposed to be this season’s villian he just aint getting it done for me.
Now if Nero somehow comes out swinging as a secretly ruthless asshole I will be impressed.

Jax is acting a lot more bad ass. I dunno about you guys but I liked it. You saw Jax acting cold, Tara stick Gemma, Lyla got shot, and some serious shit started brewing with Clay.
As far as Jax’s proof goes well in order:
He ordered Tig to kill Donna, the only way Jax proves this at the table is if Tig admits to it. In which case they also kill Tig too, a guy that Jax kinda needs if not feels sorry for.
Clay killing J/T? Well it’s only Tara, Gemma, and Piney that know that and they only know this because of the letters. What’s the current state of the letters? I thought most of the most incriminating ones were gone.
Clay ordering a hit on Tara? Only Piney and Gemma knew this. Piney’s dead, so that’s kinda out. I guess the cartel knows too but I doubt the club would listen to them.
Clay killing Piney? He admitted to that. The table won’t kill him for it.
The Nomads ordering the hit? Well according to the guy the whole cast wants dead Clay ordered the hit. They’re going to take his word over Clay’s? The guy that killed two of them? The former Prez and First 9? I doubt it.
I will say that I’m disappointed about the lack of Cartel here. That was a legit angle.

The only issue I have with the Nomad point is that Frankie confessed when he had all the power in that situation. He might have been a little panicky, I guess, but he had everyone else at gun point and had pretty much no pressure on him. He just said “Oh, yeah, Clay had us do it, okay, bye”
I buy that, though. Clay killed his friends. He’s shitting in the pool before he gets out.

Yeah he did, but the only people that heard that were the Veep (hardly an unbiased source) and Chibs (who is laying a puddle of his own blood), maybe Tig was there…but that’s still not probably proof enough to kill a fellow member, First 9 no less, without recourse. Jax isn’t Clay, he wants to be a better man and a better prez.
Lobster Monster: also Juice knows Clay killed a Nomad, so there’s a good witness for Clay in this whole thing.
Jax does not feel sorry for Tig. He feels Tig is partially to blame for Opie. Remember Jax promised Tig to Pope earlier this season when Jax didn’t need him. Now, that may have been a smokescreen, but I definitely dont think Jax feels sorry for Tig.
Unless there is something to the certificate that Clay keeps looking at I think the John Teller angle is dead for the time being.
Clay is gonna have Frankie offed and get that loose end tied up so I dont see that coming back to bite him.
I am becoming more and more sure that Clay’s death is going to come at the hands of a woman (Tara or Gemma take your pick) or at the hands af a lesser club member (Juice, Tig). I dont think Jax is going to be the one to off Clay.

Good day gang… I am arriving late to the party once again this week… let me start by saying that I had no problem with the episode. Sure Sutter is starting and ending storylines like a scoutmaster with ADD, but I like all of the action. The main thing that keeps running through my head week in and week out is what will he do for the final six weeks… especially with extended episodes on the horizon.
“I’m going to tell her there is a dead black guy in her car…” was sort of comical. Jax has continued to keep his promise of filling Tara in on each and every one of his secrets… that is clearly a good thing because as the rest of his world continues to burn, he has a constant rock at home to bounce things off of… though I still dislike her a great deal.
Gemma’s freak out at the site of Abel on the stretcher was sort of annoying… I guess it was a realistic reaction in an unrealistic situation. I am sort of glad that Sutter didn’t kill Abel… it would have been a bit much at that point and would have destroyed the rest of the “use Gemma to out Clay” storyline.
I wasn’t surprised to see Clay lie for Gemma…he has been trying to find a way back in for weeks. Mainly because he misses the same relationship that his step son now has with his wife… someone to bounce things off of when the world is burning… Where Jax benefited from included Tara in his business, Clay suffered when he began excluding Gemma from his…
I was glad to see the whole cover-up exposed sooner, rather than later. It would have just been another kick to the nuts of the Teller family if it came out later. Better to get it out of the way and move on with whatever it ends up being… It was a bit odd to hear Tara say “Sorry” before she began screaming at Gemma to get out and that she was dead to them…
I don’t mind the redemption that Jax is dangling in front of Gemma… though he didn’t truly consider Tara’s feelings on the matter, he did fill her in on his plan and she clearly signed off on it. Heck, the way that family goes, they could still end up cutting Gemma out later once they get what they need from her. Jax has turned into a pretty ruthless guy these days as evidenced by the bodies he is leaving in his wake in recent weeks. He is clearly in self and family preservation mode…
I am with Dustin… the looks that Chibs/Bobby have been giving Jax speak to the fact that they are wondering what the hell is going with him these days. He used to be the one trying to talk others out of violence etc and now he is chopping a dead guy’s hands off… though I am pretty damn glad that he did that since it set up what was probably the line of the night from Unser… “Next time a glass with a couple of finger prints will do just fine…”

Sadly, we are likely going to have to wait another two years in real life before that situation is handled… yes people like Frankie will die now, but Clay is destined to ride the series arc out… internal strife is likely to be too necessary moving forward to kill him sooner.
Poor Chibs… the guy just wants to help everyone… gets left for dead and no one is even looking for him. Bobby’s attempt to comfort Lyla didn’t work on her and it certainly didn’t work on me… “He’ll probably let him out when he gets far enough away…”
How much more proof do you need is right!!? I mean this guy has been laying waste to loved ones, business associates and members for years… yet when there are 853 witnesses to Frankie’s confession they still need more on Clay??? Seems to me that the only one at the table that might have reservations is Juice, but even he is doubting Clay… at least he was until the asinine moment that he spilled his guts…
Which leads me to POOR JUICE. We all love you Theo Rossi, but the Uproxx curse just might get you yet. Of all people to share your secret with… Clay was not the one. That is just ammo in a gun that is almost always firing… his telling Juice about his own indiscretions just ensures that he’ll likely try to frame or kill him. I still don’t think that Roosevelt will out Juice, but you never know… seems to obvious. I figured that Clay will be the one to throw him under the bus in hopes of saving his own hide.
Side note about the Clay/Juice interaction… Juice’s involvement with the Feds wasn’t even the juiciest part that Clay can use… he filled him in on all of the RICO info, Otto etc. Who’s to say that Galen is tipped off right now… dumb Juice… dumb…
I still feel that Nero is part of another shoe that has yet to drop, but that may just be wishful thinking on my part… a guy can dream right??? Though it is far more likely that he goes down in history as the Banger that Gemma is stuck calling family for the rest of her life…

Admittedly, I have a bad habit of using the ellipsis while writing informally.
It feels like Sutter has jumped whole heartedly into the M. Night Shyamalan school of writing.
Substitute things like consistent plot or compelling characters with “twists” that become so prevalent that the audience sees them coming a mile away. That is certainly easier and more “shocking” than letting strong writing bring us to logical and fulfilling resolutions.
Hey, you know what would really make an impact of the Emmy nominations for best actress? That character’s death scene. We also get the plus of not having Gemma drag down the show anymore.
Her getting iced out by Tara could have actually played for a few weeks. In fact, I thought Tara was already doing that earlier.

Jax kills Clay and than the Cartel says that OH WAIT WE NEED THE IRISH FOR ONE MORE THANG!!!!!!!!! And the conflicts in seasons 6 and 7 are triangle between Jax/Pope/Cartel.

I think a great series ender for the show would be to reveal that EVERY group is actually being run by some government agency. The one niners are actually run by Oakland SWAT, the Irish are actually INTERPOL, SOA is actually all FBI
That way the entire series turns out to be a comedy of errors where there actually were not any criminal groups, it was all undercover government agents getting involved with each other and killing each other while non-undercover government agents tried to catch them.

I thought the episode was actually pretty good. Maybe I’m just comparing it to last week’s which was pretty weak.
I understand some of the complaints, especially regarding Jax’ need for proof. This is an outlaw biker gang. Does he really need proof? Wouldn’t the four people that heard Frankie confess about Clay’s involvement be enough proof?
However I think the Gemma arc made sense. The problem with it is that the arc should have happened throughout 6 or 7 episodes. Had that happened it would have worked. But being sped up to run the gamut during the course of a single episode makes it seem like the wrong way to go. This is especially true with Tara excommunicating Gemma and then Jax a few minutes later telling Tara she won’t like the solution and then suddenly telling Gemma that there is a way back in. That happening in the span of less than 10 minutes of screen time makes it not work well.
If you look at the series as being about Gemma (especially the latest episodes), this episode was excellent. For the whole run of the show, Gemma has been trying to hold on to her identity as it relates to SAMCRO, but w/ all the changes that took place she is no longer able to. Now she has to choose if she wants to keep trying (and it looks very unlikely that it’ll work), or if she wants to pitch it all out and be a new person.
Jax and Tara will be a fun conflict. Maybe like Tony and Carmella.

As I recall it, the only reason Clay is alive in the first place is because of the deal with the Irish. If we’ve moved beyond that lifeline (as we seem to have, given Jax’s current attitude) then I don’t see what the hold up is. I mean, I do, but it’s not internal to the story.

Now, now. He made a half-hearted attempt to go to the meeting point, and was only held back by Chibbs’ powerful act of quietly telling him stay and be a good boy.

Maybe I’m as dumb as Jax, but when we saw the van (Which I thought was kind of a light, possibly bluish color) and Gemma said it was brown, but Jax still questioned Frankie about targetting Gemma, I lost my brains.

Pope never was, nor did he need to be, the Big Bad. I thought that’s where they were going after the first couple episodes, but you quickly had to realize nothing he was doing was really villainous. He lost his daughter and got revenge on the club.
I feel like he’s going to be more of a mentor for Jax than an enemy. He’s leading a civilian life and gets to be gang member/leader.
Does this happen right before he gets lost on the island.
its in between thats going to the next big twist… during a heart to heart he’s going to call Jax, Walt. tear up then tell Jax if you find Walt ill let the club go. the Feds will have in the safe house and when they break in… Opie is there. THEY HAVE BEEN DEAD THE WHOLE TIME!!! the Feds are the Dharma intuitive and they were testing Jax,for take over for Hurley as the island’s protector.Bobby will Grab him and Tell him “No, We have to go back” but Jax will decide it is the onlyway to keep his family safe.
