We couldn’t really expect Kurt Sutter to deliver an episode as powerful as last week’s, could we? This week’s low-key and somber installment dealt with the aftermath of a character’s major death, Jax looked toward the future with a new partnership, there was a Tara throw-down, and we say goodbye to Ashley Tisdale.
Let’s get right to it.
1. SAMCRO votes to pay Pope — The biggest repercussion, so far, to the death of Opie (besides Opie being dead, of course) is that Jax has convinced SAMCRO to pay Pope $50,000 and play along until they figure something else out. Damon Pope made no appearance last night (a shame because without Ryan Hurst’s character, Harold Perrineau’s character is now the most compelling on the show), but the home invasions were briefly mentioned by Clay again, and Jax reiterated that he’d find out of the Niners were behind it (they are not, because most likely, Clay is).
Also, how happy was this guy to get a line in last night’s episode?

2. Opie’s death drives Gemma to hug Clay. — Wait, strike that. The biggest repercussion to Opie’s death is that it drove a grief-stricken Gemma to embrace Clay. Gemma is all over the place this season. She’s fallen since season two, when she was the most beloved character on the show. Her manipulative maneuvering is starting to feel contrived, and besides becoming increasingly awful, her character is woefully inconsistent. She hates Clay. She loves Clay.

3. Brothel Gets Evicted — We still don’t know who called in the raid on Nero’s whorehouse (a process of elimination would suggest Clay, or perhaps Dora for no other reason than that she’s an evil lady), but Emma Jean (heretofore known only as Ashley Tisdale) was to blame initially. Nero called upon Jax to keep Ashley Tisdale safe from his henchmen associates, and — after avoiding a shoot-out with those associates — Jax and Chibs told the associates that they’d kill her on their behalf. So they had to come up with a finger and a tit to prove her death, and it is my understanding that the Tisdale subplot is over. That she was only in two episodes. So, that’s it, huh?
Sidenote: Turns out, Ashley Tisdale got the part because her Dad is a builder for Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal. According to an interview with EW:
“I didn’t audition for the role. I actually was just a really big fan of the show. It’s kind of a funny story. My dad, who built my house, also actually builds for Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal, and he has for years. And I’ve been in love with the show and I’ve always been like, ‘Dad, you gotta tell Kurt…. I want to be on the show.’ My dad’s so quiet and shy. He’s like, ‘No, no, no. I can’t do that.’ And so it just so happened that Kurt was writing Emma Jean and came upstairs to the kitchen and actually asked my dad. He’s like, ‘I’ve got a favor to ask you. I would love for Ashley to be on the show.’ And my dad was like, ‘Ohmygod, she’s gonna die.’ And so he definitely thought of me for the character. But of course, my agents, at first, were like, ‘I don’t know. We have to read it.’ I’m like, ‘I gotta do it! I gotta do it!’ Because like I said, it is one of my favorite shows.”
In the interview, she also noted that Opie’s death made her “sad, like really sad.”

4. Put a Coin in the Karma Bank — I don’t know what Wendy’s play is, or why she bailed out Gemma, or why she has to be in this goddamn show, but I wish she weren’t. Drea de Matteo annoys me almost as much as biological vs. adoptive mother storylines. Unless this ends with Tara pulling out Wendy’s hair and sticking a pistol in her mouth, I wish this particular subplot would go away. For now, however, we have to put up with the Lifetime movie schtick: “But when Abel is older, he’s gonna want to know who his real mom is.” Will he really?
5. Did you see those eyebrows? — Is it just me, or were Tara and Wendy’s eyebrows dialed up to extra thick last night? Did the make-up department just slap some caterpillars on their foreheads and call it a day? Did anyone else notice this?

There was enough BMX in this episode to please me.
i disagree. they could have used more.
Storylines involving Gemma, Tara or Wendy are becoming fast-forward material. Bad writing, mostly bad acting, their motivations don’t make sense…. I just hope it turns around. Also, was I the only one who noticed Drea de Matteo’s arms?
I’m excited for next week, it seems like the start of a new arc, and the Sons getting back to be the low-rent criminal gang that they are. Also looked like some of the humor will be back.
I stared at her arm every time she was on screen! It was more distracting than her weird, manly face.
How is Tara still employed by that hospital? Are there no Asians in Charming?
Oh, man, I’ve known for years that St. Thomas is America’s. Worst. Hospital. I’m convinced that two orderlies have a giant meth lab in the morgue.
Can you imagine how bad Gemma would be if she were played by another actress?
If Sutter wasn’t married to the actress that played Gemma, I doubt she would have been as involved throughout the history of the show.
I was really hoping for the Man on Fire revenge type aspect when they got released going after the Niners but oh well maybe later.
the black bikers are one of SAMCRO’s affiliates. they were in some episodes last season.
The whole custody thing is booooooriiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnngggg!
The black bikers at the funeral were, I think, the Grim Bastards.
Ya, the Grim Bastards. they are an affiliate gang to SAMCRO. In season 3, they got caught up in a beef between SAMCRO and The Mayans when some lackey club for the Mayans shot up Half sack’s funeral.
The black guys are the grim bastards. You are not very good at this.
+1 and also +10 jealousy that a guy can get paid to blog about tv and also be this ignorant about one of the most-written-about shows on this blog.
but maybe the Grim Bastards have a website where they direct traffic to the Sons website, ergo AFFILIATES.
You’re not good at this? I answered the same question right above your answer.
The black guys were members of the Grim Bastards. A black motorcycle gang that is allied with the SOA. They were featured prominently in Season 3. Did you miss season 3?
I saw season three, which I’ve apparently blocked out. But yes: now that you mention it, I do vaguely remember them, and how they were played against the Mayans.
I thought Season 3 was the weakest of the show’s run
Moderator: Did you know Patton Oswalt will play a minor role on the upcoming season of Justified?
Obama: I did, I did. I’m looking forward to it. He’ll make a great addition to an already stellar cast.
Romney: I love programs. I just love them. This one included.
Thank you for throwing politics into the discussion, if there was anything we all needed in this discussion it was to throw something everyone hates into something we all enjoy. so thank you, for that.
Romney: I am friends with many network executives.
To be completely honest, I’ve begun fast forwarding my DVR when Tara scenes come up.
Tara and Gemma storyline has been a bore.
I see several of the guys beat me to it, but the black guys were likely Grimm Bastards…. long time SAMCRO allies… also were used by Pope’s bad cop to lure Tig out for the bonfiring of his daughter…
Overall it was an average episode, but the send off was pretty nice. I enjoyed the musical montage and it was a fitting one.
I am not sorry to see the end of Ashley Tisdale… I wish she could have taken Gemma, Wendy and the manish Latino woman with her to the midwest. Tara can be tolerated in small doses, but the others are getting to be one of the most annoying parts of the show.
Maybe Jax/Bobby could start to piece together the fact that Clay and the new NOMADS are the only ones voicing any concerns and trying stand in the way of his decisions, although Clay quickly acquiesces Zito etc play the “we can’t get in bed with Pope” role… playing up that “black is behind the invasions” angle.
Not to continue to whine about it, but still no Alvarez. I realize that he doesn’t quite fit into what is going on, but you would think that with Nero’s crew and the 9ers, SAMCRO could be looking the Mayan direction for some support… FWIW Emilio Rivera’s IMDB page doesn’t list any season five episodes…
The Nero/Gemma situation will likely turn into Gemma screwing Jax over in some way… hopefully Sutter eventually kills his wife off…
The Grim Bastards themselves were not used, but the cop claimed that his “brother-in-law” was a Bastard and he was supposedly doing Tig a solid by calling him instead of taking his daughter in…
co-sign on getting rid of gemma and wendy. they both annoying as hell.
tara can stay, as can dora, just so tara can beat her more. that was awesome. more cast beatings. i wish tara had beat her to death and then dora was fed to pigs. more tv shows need pigs eating humans: deadwood, justified, hell on wheels, even copper.
Thank you for the second… we’ll likely need a third before we can go to Sutter…
Agreed. The cast beat down was pretty good stuff… I half thought that they would have another corpse to get rid of. Feeding it to the pigs would have worked splendidly. I also thought it would sort of screw up the business arrangement that Nero/Jax had just consummated…but I guess Nero really wants that Hookered up Elks Lodge!
Javalina Cocina debuts next spring on the Animal Channel. Or the Food Channel.
I can’t imagine doing bench presses is good for a man with an oxygen tank.
Jax and The MC’s problems are confusing and convoluted enough to follow. Do we really need Gemma, Wendy, and Tara adding to the mess of lazy and unnecessary story lines. As a viewe this show gas been one long face palm every week
How can you not know who the black bikers were? The Grim Bastards–at least when it comes to screen time–are some of SAMCRO’s oldest allies/extended brothers. Week sauce for asking who they were not once, but twice.
“week sauce” is what Chipotle serves BRAH (because it gives you the runs for a week)
Guys, I am pretty sure those black bikers were the Unpleasant Fatherless Son’s.
Wanda DeJesus is a kick-ass actress. I’m so disappointed her character has morphed into a Latina Gemma. I was really hoping she would come in this season and slap these chicks straight, but to no avail. I am not pleased with any of the female characters’ stories this season. Opie is dead and Tig is not. I’m concerned.
DeJesus you say? but I thought Tisdale was the one whose dad was a carpenter?
I see what you did there.
+10000000
The glaring inconsistencies in the writing are really starting to wear on me. Grandpa gangbanger Pope appearing out of thin air; “retired” banger Nero suddenly having a crew of henchmen trying to avenge him; any scene with Tara, Wendy and/or Gemma. The whole show is reaching down into telenovela territory now, though that may be more due to the fact that I’ve been watching with the subtitles on since Belfast.
yeah man, agreed. Where the hell does Pope live? Charming seems awfully big for a small town.
Pope lives in Oakland, from what I gathered.
I guess that would explain this:
Nero explained he still maintains his old connections. He still works for the gang, he’s just not a henchman.
Joel will probably be the dude who has to get them a finger and tit for those Latino gangster dudes.
So I say expect him next week.
Skeeter, the guy who works at the mortuary/crematorium will most likely get the nipple and thumb. He was in the episode last night and spoke to jax on the phone. He was also in season 1 where he delivered two deceased bodies to pose as dead Mayans
McHale will probably be a porn actor. He’ll take any excuse he can to take his shirt off
This season has been really good so I’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop with regards to Sutter being a shitty writer.
I thought it was BS the way Nero was so quick to protect Ashley Tisdale and just hand her over to Jax. Like, I get that he might not want her to get killed by his gangbanger friends, but I don’t buy his just immediately being so chummy with the Sons when it comes to his business. ESPECIALLY since SOA via Gemma and Clay are responsible for his place getting raided.
The Tara/Gemma/Wendy plot lines are the worst. I like Gemma when she’s in a supporting role to a plotline to Clay or Jax. I just aways hate Tara, she is a terrible actress, and a terrible character.
This episode was 2/10, would not bang.
After last week I was hoping for something better than last night’s episode. I could’ve skipped it and not have missed much. I don’t know if I like the Nero character, and I agree on the Tara/Gemma/Wendy plot line. It’s just filler.
What ever happened to that light-hearted Tig that liked to fuck corpses?
I miss that guy…
There’s a thumbless, one-breasted corpse coming up soon. You can always dream!
And what of Jax’s hat tips to the boys on bikes and the one whose house he crashed into? Is this Jax realizing the futility of SAMCRO? Him thinking those boys will one day be Abel and his other kid looking at him in the same way? And why did Jax tell Nero to back off Gemma? Why weren’t Opie’s kids at the wake? They’ve been in worse places. I can’t believe Tara fell for Gemma’s shit YET AGAIN. I can think of 10 things I didn’t learn watching this episode.
My guess would be that the boys on bikes made him realize why the club was started to begin with… it was camaraderie and friendship and it has deteriorated into gun running, coke… and ultimately his “badly photoshopped” boyhood bike riding best friend Opie being killed…
More than Tara being manipulated by Gemma… Juice being led around by the nose by Clay is pretty damn annoying!
Yeah I assumed it was supposed to be a reminder for Jax of him and Ope whenever they were kids, and how they probably looked at the club in a similar manner.
Gemma and Tara’s shit is the least interesting part of the show. They feel tacked on just to fill the time.
I bet Joel will show up as the new partnership plot develops between Jax and Nero. My guess is he’s going to interfere in it in some way down the line and get his head blown off.
I can’t lie. I got a lump in my throat during Opie’s wake. I’m sad to see him go since he was one of the most interesting characters and definitely the moral center of SAMCRO. I can’t wait for Jax to get revenge on Pope, but at the same time I’d like to see Pope break the SOA villain mold and stick around for more than one season.
I must give Hunnam props for adding “solemn funeral procession bro-walk” to his pantheon of gret bro walks.
I’m calling complete BULLSHIT though on those guys shoulder pressing Opie’s coffin out to the hearse. Opie was a big man, plus the coffin, that’s probably like 500 lbs. and you’re telling me Bobby Munson can lift it as high as Happy.
I was thinking the same thing as I watched it, and I figured the whole thing might have come to 350 lbs. (he wasn’t that big). Split between 5 guys carrying it, that’s less than 60 lbs. each. Bobby could easily lift 60 lbs. to his shoulder.
And a shoulder press goes from the shoulder upwards. They didn’t carry the coffin on arms extended; it would have been more of a clean.
Maybe I’m in the minority here but I just don’t get the Tara hate. She stands by Jax and considering that the club has put her life, her husband’s and her kids lives in danger several times still backs him up. She’s the anti Winona (Winona>Ava) where I can at least understand the hate for her character. I like Maggie Siff as an actress and as a lady I’d love to get naked with.
Yeah, as an actress I think she’s pretty good, but I think everyone just doesn’t get her motivation. If she was a good mother, she’d GTFO of town as soon as possible, but she’s becoming more and more of an “old lady”. I guess it’s that Sutter set her up as Jax’s salvation, but now he’s actually her ruin.
I think that’s kind of the point of Tara. Tara’s a normal upstanding person in an abnormal low life world. She genuinely cares for Jax, and Jax for her. Jax is trying to change for her and his kids, and she’s trying to change a bit for Jax. Her environment is changing her. Besides, this is a “guy’s show” and Tara’s the perfect character for one. She’s hot, accomplished, and she can kick some ass. She’s basically Ronda Rousey.
I think Sutter’s trying to make her Gemma, except not a cunt. I think he’ll eventually set up Tara as what will cause Jax to send his mother out to pasture. Whereas Gemma’s this cold manipulative bitch who always has an angle and NEEDS to fuck things up for everyone…Tara only uses manipulation and intimidation when she needs to. She doesn’t like all of that shit, I don’t think Jax does either. It’s in his nature to do that kind of stuff, but I don’t think he actually enjoys it. The episode where Tara’s hand got fucked, it seemed like he actually liked talking to the cop about normal shit.
seriously though? eyebrows and flaring nostrils? that’s what you really take from this show?
stop writing about trivial shit you find annoying that’s only going to make people notice and annoy them too. aren’t you supposed to get people to like the shows you write about?
I don’t think the main point of writing about some of these shows is to get people to like them. They’re supposed to be humorous and engaging discussions.
Though, consequently, I only started watching SoA because this site talked about it so much and now it’s the only thing I look forward to on Tuesday nights. And I find the bro walk to be hilarious, though I do not notice the nostril flaring very much.
get people to like something we write about? You new to the internet? It’s about drinking the HATERade homie.
*bro walks*
Screw the Zombie walks this year… we need Uproxx to host the first annual national Bro Walk!
I would gladly Bro Walk with you gentlemen into battle.
@complexcontext was just browalked out the door.
Though I may be the only one who cares about not seeing Alvarez, I took action…
Being as that Emilio Rivera is an uber cool dude… I messaged him on FB and he was nice enough to get back… no Mayans this season, but they are alive and well and we will see them again.
Dude, Rivera looks like a good person to have in your pocket. “Listen, Emilio, I have to go see my wife’s asshole boss and could use some backup. All you gotta do is stand there. Afterwards we’ll go to In n Out burger. Cool?”
If the payment was merely an In and Out burger to have Rivera be the heavy in all of my “in need of intimidation” situations I would use him all the time!
Also what I noticed is that Tara’s ground and pound was extremely effective. She was able to completely bypass Carla’s guard and use the GnP all the way through.
I’m just glad there wasn’t too much hair pulling and screaming of “Let go of my hair bitch! No, you let go of my hair, bitch!” I always thought girl fights in high school woulda been hot, but when 2 cholas fought, it was a complete boner killer…
I feel like bashing someone with your broken hand (it is broken, right?) would hurt like hell, despite the cast’s effectiveness as a weapon.
Hardcore Love – you must not have seen many Cowboy Bob Orton matches, then.
Also I forget if it was here or AV Club where we were wondering what’s the Nero angle: I guess Nero’s there to give Jax sort of the archetype to live up to as a gangster, provide SAMCRO with a nonviolent way to earn, and use as a vehicle for Gemma to fuck over Jax and the Club. I have a feeling the season ends with Clay and Gemma at odds, and Jax being forced to either kill Clay or let Gemma die with the deal with the Cartel on the line.
I think I’m the only person that doesn’t want Tara to die. I don’t find her all that annoying, mostly because I’d miss DAT ASS. There was a particularly glorious shot of it in last night’s episode I believe.
I don’t know if I want her to die, but I’d be happy with Gemma going (I was hoping Tara would just watch Dora kill her). Clay too. He’s such a dick.
I like Tara, and I don’t mind Gemma, although her act is running pretty thin. Wendy should just be dead already. She sucks as a character, and Drea De Matteo sucks as an actress. They really shouldn’t have told us who was doing the break-ins if they weren’t going to focus on them at all, it sorta just trivializes the whole thing, like, “yeah, they’re important, but not as important as Nero and Dora.”
It looks like according to the previews for next week, we’ll be getting a McHale sighting.
Also we learned that Jax is gonna get stuck hard, he had a nasty black eye in one of the scenes for next week. It’ll be interesting to see how/why that happens.
2 Questions:
Is Gemma really that intolerable as a character now or are we supposed to love how much we can’t stand her? She’s about to start treading Lori Grimes territory pretty soon.
What’s with Opie’s family, did they forget that he has a mother still? The kids were never shown, weren’t at the wake, and only mentioned by Lyla who is stuck with them, and his mother wasn’t even mentioned. I know she hates the club, but I gotta imagine she’d want to see her son off, and she would probably still love to bake cookies for her grandkids and tell them really boring stories.
I wondered why they didn’t mention Opie’s mom either. It’s been mentioned before she’d watch the kids. Maybe she’s super old, but who knows?
I think Gemma is already in Lori territory and as somehow made me not hate Tara by extension.
1) I was under the impression that Dora called in the raid.
and
2) I kind of think Nero might kill Emma.
Dora told Nero’s crew where to find Emma. It remains to be seen who called in the raid. (My vote is Clay.)
sutter must think that the way to win an emmy for his wife is to shove her down our throats i see.
last nights episode wasnt a opie funeral episode it was how gemma days goes episode
Horatio and Fortinbras are the only major survivors in Hamlet, his philosophical friend and the foreign crown prince who assumes the thrones with the entire Danish court now dead, and the Norwegians about the invade and conquer Denmark anyway.
Interestingly, Hamlet’s father killed Fortinbras’ father. Given that, I think maybe the last men standing might be Alvarez and Unser.
Man, if EVERYONE dies, I’m gonna be so bummed.
I’m surprised they haven’t used Chuck Zito as much. He’s old school badass that punched out Jean Claude Van-Damme years ago. You should see his bike too!
But he’s not an actor and too much fan service drags a show down.
Nero called the cops himself… He has a bigger thing going. He used the gang bangers to get closer with Jax in the second episode with the fake game of chicken and he knew that Ashley didn’t call the cops.
last episode was just too good
I just hate Tara’s hair. The bangs dont work on her.
Its getting close to the time where Happy needs his own spin off.
Happy needs to earn a new smiley face tattoo.
Do you watch Sons? Kurt Yaeger was in the first episode of season 5 and also had lines in it. (In case you didn’t know, Kurt is the guys you refer to as “this guy was happy to get a line”)
Yeah, it wasn’t Greg the Peg’s first line spoken, watch every episode thoroughly before publishing so you don’t make mistakes that create a ring of misguided information around your bloggers again, rendering your site a place to not go for viable information.
If you are going to write a piece on a show please lets give the cast credit and use names…
The guy that was happy to have his first line… his name is Kurt Yaeger or his SOA name Greg the Peg, He spoke in the first episode of this season.
Um, Kurt Yaeger a.k.a “Greg the Peg” had a line previously. Please fact check.
If you’re gonna post a pic of a character at least know his name and know he has had more than a line. His name is Kurt Yaegar. Also an incredible actor who does lots of charity work.
GLAD TO SEE THAT KURT YAEGAR’S FRIENDS AND FAMILY HAVE CHIMED IN WITH THEIR THOUGHTS ON THIS POST
Pope called in the raid. His guys spotted Jax with Nero and he probably had them tracked down.
He has motivation and resources.
I am so sick of Tara and Gemma story lines. They are BORING! Also, is anyone concerned that Juice seems to be getting away with ratting out the club last season? Does JAX not care about who helped the Feds get information to charge the club with RICO law?
My favorite line from Gemma: Dora the whora. I just love it
the way this season has gone, it seems Kurt Sutter and Co didnt have a long term plan for the show. they are just throwing thing at the wall to see what stick and working with it till they can’t
Dead Opie is sad
agreed
I’ve just watched pretty much this entire season today, and I agree with a lot of you. I too have been fast forwarding the shit out of Tara.
