PREPARE TO BE UNDERWHELMED, FOLKS. NBC announced full season pick ups for three of their fall shows last night (due to the Olympics, they premiered their new programming before the other networks), and they’re decent at best and I hate you, Ryan Murphy at worst.
NBC ordered nine additional episodes of Go On, The New Normal, and Revolution, bringing their episode totals for the season up to 22, TVGuide.com has confirmed.
Revolution has been a solid performer for the network on Monday nights, debuting to 11.7 million and a 4.1 rating in the adults-18-to-49 demographic, the biggest drama premiere since 2009. The J.J. Abrams-produced series…has consistently retained The Voice‘s lead-in, with its most recent airing drawing 8.4 million viewers and a 3.2 on Monday.
Go On…bowed during the Olympics to 16.1 million viewers and a 5.6 rating. In its usual timeslot, the show debuted to 9.6 million viewers and a 3.4. Its most recent outing drew 7.3 million viewers and a 2.7. Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal…debuted to 7 million and a 2.5, dropping its latest outing with 5.2 million and a 2.0 rating. (Via)
The best of the bunch is Go On, though even then, the most complimentary thing you can say about it is, “Well, it’s like Community without any of the charm or wit or Alison Brie and/or Gillian Jacobs, but hey, it’s got a black guy and an old person, so, um, when’s Community back? Oh, that long?” Dustin shared his thoughts on Revolution, and I agree shrugheartedly. As for The New Normal, well, you know how you occasionally watch a show because someone you like is in it? You’ll convince yourself that, sure, it doesn’t look good, but this actor has done something I previously enjoyed, so I’ll keep trying. Surely Hypothetical Actor won’t let me down! I made it five minutes into the New Normal pilot before literally saying out loud, “Why, Andrew Rannells? Why?” It’s crude, poorly written, hateful, bland, and offensive, but not in the way that Ryan Murphy intended — it’s offensive in the way that Murphy’s getting paid large sums of money to write lines like, “I am extremely tolerant to all peoples. When they opened that Chipotle here, I was the first of my friends to go. And that is Spanish food.”

But I digress. On the flip side of the NBC pick ups is Fox’s The Mob Doctor.
Monday night’s episode fell 23 percent to 3.5 million viewers and a mere 1.0 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. That makes Mob Doc the lowest-rated show on a major broadcast network last night, putting it 47 percent below the second-lowest show. (Via)
This news should please lovers of pun headlines everywhere. “The Mob Doctor Is On Life Support” and “The Mob Doctor Is About to Get Whacked” are there for the taking.

I’m enjoying Go On more than I thought I would.
Go On has a chance to be a good show.
The things that will doom it will be the premise and cast. If it can grow beyond the depressing dead wife thing as a focus of the show it will help make the episodes/moments that touch on that much more powerful. One of the more impactful things was when he couldn’t fall alseep in their bed. To follow that up with the crying episode was annoying.
They need to trim down the support group cast and get rid of people being weird just to be weird. Drop the Out Doer asian lady, drop the creepy white guy, drop the older white guy, and I’m on the fence on the cat lady. This is the Outsourced problem as a friend put it. By the time the show found its core by trimming the weird characters back no one was left watching it.
On an aside there was a radio duo based in Washington DC named Don and Mike. Don’s wife was killed in a car accident and he was off air for a long time. When he came back there were multiple times where he broke down on air, left the show early or got downright angry at the listeners. Perhaps part of my dislike for the show’s premise is that, good radio personalities make you feel like you know them personally so it was painful to be a part of that.
Mob Doctor is to medical dramas what Fox News is to non-suicide related news… AWFUL or in pun terms offal.
“Like watching The Mob Doctor? Forgetaboutit!”
I’ve watched Go On twice now, and both times, I just got mad at how Community Lite it is. They even ripped off the Annie/Shirley “aaaaaaw.” Those bastards!!!!
And, just like New Normal with Andrew Rannells, they are totally wasting a talented Broadway actor. I saw Laura Benanti as the lead in Gypsy, and she is waaaay too good to be doing a crappy sitcom.
I hate watch Revolution. I can’t help it. I enjoy hating it.
Looks like the cast and crew of the Mob Doctor are soon going to be in need of a Job Doctor, amirite?
The Mob Doctor needs a proctologist after those ratings, amirite?
I’ve been meaning to pity watch at least 1 episode of Go On just for the sheer brilliance of Brett Gellman on Eagleheart, and hoping he talks Maria Thayer into making an appearance. But now that you guys are calling it a watered down Community, I think I’d rather do nothing than be annoyed by Matthew Perry for 30 minutes.
His character is the worst part of the show. He is weird to just be weird, no back story has been given yet to explain it. He just is.
I found him to be the only funny part of the show
Two episodes have aired, right Flexhead? Seems a little early for “no back story” complaints. And I don’t know if weirdness is something that requires explanation, but I guess that’s a matter of opinion.
I’m with Argentino, maybe it’s because of my love of him through his various CBB appearances, Gelmania & Eagleheart but the only thing that got me to stay beyond the poster and the words “Starring Matthew Perry” was Gelman.
We’re 4 episodes in and I know enough about the support group people except for him and the Asian woman.
Four, really? Damn, I guess time flies when you’re not watching Go On.
I think the writing was on the wall for The New Normal when its commercials kept including that “I love the gays because my hair!” line. HARHARHAR what a clever and original joke. Old as dirt even when Community did it, but Shirley at least delivered it in an amusing way.
I could not get through the entire pilot of Go On but I’m thinking about giving it another shot. I’m happy about Revolution being picked up–so far it’s great and I’m excited to see what will happen as the season unfolds. If you’re a fan of J.J. Abrams you have to check out this awesome video…
