Here’s what I think of Andy Samberg: He’s funny (or he can be), but he’s not a terrific actor. Many of his Digital Shorts on Saturday Night Live were fantastic, but his talents in sketches left something to be desired. He wasn’t impressive in Adam Sandler’s That’s My Boy, either, but who would be? I do know he’s gained a cult following thanks to his movie, Hot Rod, but will that brand of humor translate into a sitcom?
We’re about to find out.
According to Deadline, Samberg will star in a single-camera cop comedy from Parks and Recreation co-creator, Mike Schur (also known as Ken Tremendous, who got an awesome shout out on 30 Rock last night) and Dan Goor. Samberg will play the lead detective in the series, which is about an assortment of New York City detectives working together in an outer-borough precinct. Fox has picked up the pilot, and is developing it with an eye toward 2013.
Meanwhile, in related news, do you remember this image from Parks and Recreation last season?

It was an inside joke, described by Mike Schur as a promo image for a 2003 failed cheesy cop sitcom, Philly Justice. Schur said the promo was taken before Paul Rudd was replaced by Dylan McDermott, who was replaced by Dermot Mulroney. Anyway, as things like this are wont to do in the Internet age, according to a Tweet from Dylan McDermott, that series is about to become a reality, or at least a Funny or Die video.

Wait, I’m confused… Was this a real thing?
Are any of the other guys from Lonely Island going to be involved in the sitcom? I like Samberg, I just think he needs to work with the right people in order to be funny, he can’t carry something on his own yet.
yea so true hot rod > that’s my boy
So, Samberg didn’t sell his soul to Adam Sandler?
Pfft. What would Sandler do with a soul?
I’m not privy to all the details, but it has something to do with Kevin James. How else can you explain the Paul Blart fall fest in all of Sandler’s Happy Madison movies?
Seriously, a supercut of Kevin James falling down would run longer than the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Anybody else watching the British sit-com Cuckoo starring Andy Samberg? He plays an ultra-hippie who marries a British girl and moves in with her family. It’s pretty fucking funny. All 6’7″ of Greg Davies plays the dad.
shhhh! it didn’t happen in ‘murrica, so it didn’t happen at all. got it?
Nobody was even curious enough to ask about it. Murrica indeed.
If my Name was Mulroney McDylann I’d be waiting by the phone to help this come full circle.
Yay! Bonus points if they get Jorm in a Mose-esque recurring role. Or just make him a regular.
Dude, Samberg was EASILY the best SNL castmember of the last five years.
As someone who doesn’t regulary watch SNL, a large majority of the better skits I see/hear about feature Samberg so I can’t disagree.
If it appealed to him, I could easily see Samberg hosting a late night talk show in the future. The Lonely Island digital shorts are too awesome not to be continued in some format. His personality, wit and humor would be a good fit for an edgy/unedited type late night show. If Comedy Central can air unedited movies/standup late at night, why not have Samberg host a unedited late nite talk show?
Single camera, cop comedy? So it’s PERFECTO?
i hope he does the whole series in his mark whalberg imitation character.

I really hope this isn’t the Boss series finale. It’s really an uncommonly good show.
Just so we are clear, Andy Samberg is capable of acting. Hot Rod will be a cult classic eventually…and he was solid in Celeste and Jesse. Not oscar worthy shit by any means, but I have no doubt he could carry a sitcom.
