It won’t come out until next April, but the SyFy Network — which has basically survived as long as it has thanks to Battlestar Galactica and it’s 4,579 spin-off series — is attempting to launch a new original series, Defiance. The futuristic drama stars Grant Bowler (True Blood) and Julie Benz (Dexter) and, according to THR, it’s about “a transformed Earth, inhabited by the survivors of a universal war. Forced to co-habitate, the group struggles to build a new society among the devastation.”
That’s a sufficiently vague description, but the 30-second promo for the series, at the very least, looks ambitious. It’s gotta be better than Revolution.
Here’s a more full synopsis of the show from IMDB:
The series is set in the near future, where aliens known collectively as Votans have come to Earth seeking a new home after their solar system was destroyed. However, when they reached Earth they discovered that despite a prolonged negotiation with the government on Earth they were not welcome. Rather than turn away, they began a war with the humans as they are determined to make Earth their new home. During the war, the Votans drop terraformers on the planet and transform the surface of the planet; scorching the earth, opening chasms in the ground and covering the surface of the planet in dust and debris. After decades of war, a ceasefire is declared when both side realise that they must focus on survival on this new almost alien planet. The series largely revolves around the character of Jeb Nolan. Jeb was only ten years old when the Votans arrived and he served in the military during the war. With the war now over, he returns to his hometown of St Louis to find that its is no longer the city he left; it is little more than refugee camp. Deciding that his services are needed, Jeb takes up a position as the Chief Lawkeeper in Defiance, so he can protect the town from dangerous clashes between humans and aliens, military scavengers and others dangerous visitors who occasionally enter the town.
The series also stars Mia Kirshner, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

This series ties in to a video game. Apparently the video game world is persistent and will effect what occurs on the show and vice-versa. I don’t have high hopes.
Why you gotta’ remind me of Harsh Realm?
But didn’t they cancel the BSG prequel? I’d rather have that.
Julie Benz is pretty lady. Pretty pretty.
Alphas is a good show. There, I said it.
I second that.
Gary should have his own show, in addition to remaining on Alphas. He is the greatest.
I like the cast quite a lot on the show. The storyline has been, lets just say a bit of a downer this season, but I love the cast.
Isn’t this Alien Nation? Or because it wasn’t a universal war that brought the aliens to Earth to co-habitat that this makes this different?
I actually like Haven and Warehouse 13. I think those are their 2 shows that keep the network afloat. O and also Alphas (which I just cant like for some reason, like the seattle seahawks).
Does Lost Girl make its way down? All this stuff seems to come from the same lot.
Any show that has St. Louis destroyed will be must-see TV for me, particularly while the Cardinals are still playing.
By 4,579, don’t you mean 1? The only spinoff series I’m aware of os Caprica, which was cancelled after one or two seasons. There was also Blood & Chrome, but it was more of a reboot than a spinoff, and wasn’t picked up. Anyway, the plot sounds interesting; I can imagine enjoying it.
I think Caprica was the only one and that lasted 19 episodes.
Yeah. I would say they’ve survived more on a combo of USA-like sci-fi shows, ghost shows, and bad TV movies.
I always wonder what happens to things like Baseball and Football in a war-torn post apocalyptic future. Are the St. Louis Cardinals still playing? I’m sure they didn’t bother rebuilding the Rams.
What are the chances Julie Benz’s character turns into a whiny bitch? So far, she’s batting 1000.
She was more badass than whiny in Angel.
I’ll just be in the corner by myself.
