We were only briefly introduced to Benji’s Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix on last night’s episode of Parks & Recreation. Basically all we knew about it was that it started with “Shoop” by Salt-N-Pepa, and that we were not to judge him for it. Considering that I just checked and I can still do the entire first verse of the song off the top of my head, and I am therefore in no place to judge, the latter point was moot anyway. Regardless, it was a cool little bit.
But then this morning the heroes at Parks went out and took it to 11 by releasing the full track list of Benji’s Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix on their Facebook page, and making it available through Spotify. The list is after the jump, and I think it provides us with a nice little window into the mind of Ben Wyatt.

OK, putting aside the fact that the correct Boyz II Men song for a “Summer Jamz” list is CLEARLY “Motownphilly” (I have very strong feeling about this), I have only one major bone to pick with Ben’s selections. One of the following songs HAS to be on the list: “Regulators” by Warren G and Nate Dogg, “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan, or “What’s Goin’ On” by 4 Non Blondes. Has to be on there. And if this is a road trip mix, you have to consider “Hero” by Enrique Iglesias for embarrassingly earnest sing-a-long purposes.
My vote is Montell Jordan, but, hey, it’s your list. Think about it, though.

Parks N Rec has already paid its respects to Montell Jordan

You’re right on Motownphilly though
Community kind of paid respect to Motownphilly with Andre’s reproposal.

GODDAMMIT I FINALLY HAD THAT GIN BLOSSOMS SONG OUT OF MY HEAD!!@!@!!
You’ll never get it out Pete, NEVER!
*maniacal laughter*
You mean those same “heroes” that awarded us second place? Heroes, my ass.
It looks like this list is skewing 1992-1994, or otherwise I’d say that Len’s “Steal My Sunshine” should have a place in any “Cool Times Summer Jamz Mix.”
In that case.
Ohhhh snap I see that and raise you…

Someone needs to cut an infomercial for this compilation album. I’ll buy at least five copies.
I would’ve thought Ben would be partial to “Informer” by Snow, but then again I am incredibly racist.
Snow = greatest Canadian rapper of all time.
So you haven’t heard Steve Nash’s duet with Shaq?
How ’bout Shaq and Fu Schnickens?
That list brings me back to frat parties and bouncing at a bar with a really shitty d.j.
I may just post corny/bad/great 90s songs in this thread all weekend.
HAHAHA
Most 90s song of all-time?
I don’t think anyone can top Big Mountain.
This song is pretty that time period too, though.

OH WAIT NO NO NO I GOT THIS.
Also, how the hell did “Her and Now” by Letters to Cleo not make the list?
*Here
Or “Here and Now” by Luther Vandross for that matter
And he’s already got the shirt!
Man, I thought our music sucked in the mid-70′s. You win.
This is my contribution to shitty songs from the 90s. From 1999.
We were talking about this song recently, wondering why it never caught on as as “end of the night” song for crappy local cover bands like ours. The consensus was “because it really, really sucks.”
This was the exact song my friends’ cover band used to end sets. Despite it really, really sucking.
Pete, that song closed every bar in Boston from 1999-2007.
Constantly used in Chicago as well.
other songs would be MMMMM by crash test dummies ([www.youtube.com])
Jimmy Olsen’s Blues by the spin doctors (or anything by the spin doctors)
and Mr. Jones by the counting crows.
I’m gonna have to put my vote in for Lucas With the Lid Off!
Oh shit! It’s 1995 up in this bitch!
I’m good with everything from Momma Said Knock You Out through Rumpshaker, and can take or leave the rest.
And yes, swapping in Motown Philly would indeed improve things.
i made the observation last night that ben wyatt is best friends with dean pelton (the inclusion of “kiss from a rose”), and nick miller and winston (“groove is in the heart”).
that said, a little sad that they didn’t go with “wannabe” – i secretly think ben has a crush on one of the spice girls.
Also, wait. Why isn’t Bust a Move on this list?
I’m surprised there’s no Blues Traveler.
And it’s adorable that Ben even has mix CD’s instead of iTunes playlists.
Where’s the Gansta Rap? I know you boppin’ your head… cause I can see ya!
This is probably more likely to be on a Tom Haverford mixtape, but…

Your Soul for Real inclusion just made me remember my grade school crush… She was fat… thanks for that
Two funny shows making Humpty Dance jokes this week.
Coincidence?
Bust a move was ’89. Which disqualifies it for a ’90s mix, and means I am OLD AS SHIT NOW.
no PM Dawn?
34 seconds into the Montell video, thats totally Rose Byrne right?
My girlfriend’s surprised there’s no Sugar Ray on this.
THIS–> [www.youtube.com]
is the king of 90′s cheese
No Wu-Tang? – How about one my favorite Method Man jams.

And now I have to update the music on my mp3 player because I need ALL OF THESE SONGS. Shut up. Don’t judge me.
I didn’t click every last link, so I’m hopingsomeone’s already said Blackstreet- No Diggity
No “Slam” by Onyx anywhere? I don’t think I know you anymore, Ben Wyatt.*
*But, seriously, please be my friend Adam Scott.
Also, it seems like everyone always forget “Here Comes the Hotstepper” for some reason, including myself. (also I can’t see any of the youtubing going on here so sorry if I step on toes)
I’m just going to send these links/videos one at a time, via email, to everyone in my contacts list. Without any subject line/explanation.
How many will it take before I get a “WTF?” response.

Am I the only one that can see Ben Wyatt lip-synching The Cranberries? “In your hey-yud, in your hey-ay-ay-ud, zombie, zombie, zombie-ee-ee…”
