‘Animal Practice’ Canceled, Replaced By Even Worse Show, ‘Whitney’

To the surprise of only the people behind Fox’s Mob Doctor and CBS’s Partners, Justin Kirk’s aimless and completely inert Animal Practice has been given the axe by NBC. Poor Tyler Labine: He keeps making shows, and they keep getting fewer and fewer episodes before they are canceled. Lest you think this is great news, however, note that the dreadful Whitney will be replacing the departed series, which means that the Whitney will never see its regularly scheduled Friday time slot. Whitney will return to its old time slot on November 14th.

What does that mean for what was initially scheduled as its Friday night time-slot partner, Community?

The return of Joel McHale’s ensemble is still in limbo, although it will likely be brought off the shelf soon. Guys with Kids is not faring any better than Animal Practice was in the ratings, but I’m assuming that NBC is keeping it a little longer out of deference to its creator, Jimmy Fallon. Community would not sit well on Wednesdays, anyway, as it’s better suited to its old Thursday night. My guess is that Community will either replace 30 Rock after it airs its final 11 episodes, or more likely, take over Up All Night’s slot when the lowest rated of the Thursday night comedies is canceled, which will probably be sooner rather than later. The fact that Christina Applegate didn’t mention Up All Night in her Saturday Night Live monologue this past weekend should tell you all you need to know about both her and NBC’s faith in the future of the re-tooled sitcom.

The best news of all about the cancellation of Animal Practice, of course, is that the monkey, which plays Annie’s Boobs on Community, is free to return to the sitcom.
