After half a season of subtle and not-so-subtle callbacks last night went in a different direction. The only real wink I picked up on was the Fight Milk (FIGHT MILK!) labels being made out of Mac’s re-purposed bicep/dick flyers from S3. That being said, “Franks Back in Business” may have been the Sunniest episode of the season thus far. Scamming, backstabbing, willing yourself to have sex with a tiny Asian boy, you name it. Some quick hits before we get to it:
- I hear warthogs’ necks are so thick they can’t be hanged.
- Coor Light Sunny placement vs. Miller Light SOA placement: who ya got?
- Joel Murray really shouldn’t be allowed to guest star in anything unless he pees his pants.
- Vic Vinegar would excel at so many professions, needs to launch his own douche line.
- Kaitlin Olson should be required to do one accent per episode.
- I’ve enthusiastically referred to a good meal as “the tits” for years now and it pains me to admit that I’ve never thought of making that statement literal. Touché, Warthog. Touché.
The Sunniest moments…
The 24 Hour Rule To Lost Wallets

A gang has to have a code.
Dee Is The Best At Boner Exits

A possible callback to “Later, boners.” Regardless, I want a lady in my life who knows exits like Sweet Dee does.
Frank Knows How To Cut The Crust Off This Sh*t Sandwich

Frank channeling his inner Gordon Gekko is priceless for so many reasons. I was kind of expecting Michael Douglas to stroll in at any moment and engage Frank in a Greed Off.

that shirt that mac was wearing (that funky american-flag collage shirt) had my husband second guessing his own personal style….
Charlie can say anything, and I mean ANYTHING, and I would still laugh.
was this the inspiration for the wallet song?
Anyone else notice the label on the Fight Milk bottle was shaped like a dick? It’s a callback to something Mac did a while ago, where it was supposed to be an arm flexing but instead looked like a vein-y boner
I miss Fat Mac.
I personally prefer skinny Mac.
I loved how even Frank, the founder of the company, didn’t know what they “do” other than make money.
Most of this episode was a big time callback to Home of the Original Kitten Mittens.
No wonder I was so smitten.
Was there ever a serial killer identified in the “Mac is A Serial Killer” episode? If not, that would be great if it really was Dennis the whole time.
Yea, it was Dee’s fat quiet neighbor who worked at the hardware store. They found heads in his freezer.
Call the media. Send out a press release. The Warthog is back!
Danny Devito did a Gordon Gecko ripoff in a horrible movie called Other People’s Money. That knowledge made me love this episode even more.
Dennis got off, did you?
Can’t. Look. Away.
It was the finger that really did it.
Another callback that seems to have gone unmentioned (if it has, I missed it below), but not a major one: the Asian flute from The Gang Solves the North Korean Situation played when Frank canned Charlie at the sushi bar.
Man, did I get off.
its great to see Frank turn deeper and deeper into a total shitshow of a human being…not so much this episode, barring the opening with Charlie on his back. #trollfoot
so many lolz
argh, missed this episode. i guess i need to watch it immediately?
At least once.
give me a moment, i have to switch gears
did anyone point out that the video for crowtein itself was a callback to the kitten mittens episode?
and also, c’mon no gif of dennis “getting off”??
I love how more and more demeneted and “serial-killer”-esque Dennis is becoming. And you can’t go wrong with Mac and Dennis going into business together.
I know it’s a typo but demeneted should be a word. That Charlie uses. For an entire episode for no reason.
I hope he becomes a murderer.
I LOVE TO BE BOUND!
This may be a reach…but is the story about lefevre getting stabbed in the alleyway a callback to “Hundred Dollar Baby” were the gang ran into a method with a knife in the alley?
methhead*
Aside from Charlie’s “Day Man” shirt, another call back was the return of Detective Tanner who questioned Mack and Charlie about the missing LeFevre. He had previously questioned the gang about Charlie’s Jihad tape from season 2.
haha damn you Thrillhouse, i was just typing that in.
almost the exact same line/delivery too…
“excuse me. EXCUSE ME.”
they burnt that Jew’s building down good (don’t worry, i was thinking about the context)
The story about Lefevre getting murdered due to the gang’s incompetence was a very underrated part of this episode.
Mac’s inability to focus on anything NOT bodyguard related was awesome, as well as Dennis having to mentally “switch gears” to get out of the mindset of having sex with a tiny asian boy
I love how whenever Frank and Charlie find something Charlie always blurts out how the gang should utilize it. Crow eggs!?! Fucking brilliant!
de vito is always classy……. love the creed! still not as good as his Rambo!!!
Be a lot classier if he always had some breakfast sausages in his shirt pocket.
Great episode..”I need to switch gears.” ha
Anyone else notice the new Justified promo btw?
Can someone upload that?
Has anyone else noticed that Mac still has all his “fat” shirts, but they’re now just really baggy?
Yes and the best part is he only seems to use for formal attire
considering it’s mentioned in the comments every single recap, yes i think others have noticed.
Sorry for the inconvenience, I’ll extensively research before I ever make a comment again.
Don’t worry about it, noticing Mac’s fat shirts is never not funny.
In the past I’ve always felt the first couple episodes were not as strong compared to the later episodes. This season has been one great episodes after the other.
When Dennis told the Asian kid he had to “switch gears” I LOLed so hard I drooled a lil bit. Not a lot, just a lilbit.
The boner thing isn’t so much a callback as a recurring thing. They’ve always been creative with their insults to get around censorship.
This was the best sunny episode since Rum-Ham.
RUM HAM!
I’M SORRY RUM HAM! I’M SORRY!
When Frank & Mac team up, it is always a great time…
AAANNNDDD with that comment I get Rum Ham badge, effin’ A
Mac should’ve gotten mad, called Frank “Martini” and thrown a beer jug through a window.
Am I the only one that was disappointed when Mac failed to do any martial arts after giving his ocular patdown?
Kaitlin Olson is hypnotic in that “What?” gif.
I don’t know if this season will be better known for the callbacks or for the frightening levels of depth that have developed in Dennis’ psychopathy.
He was at 11 last night.
I’m getting increasingly convinced that the final episode will see Dennis exposed as a serial killer and the gang acting like they had accepted it as fact for years and are not surprised at all.
I really want this serial killer thing to happen.
Oh, please let this happen…
I see Dennis as a BTK kind of guy. There has to be some type of rape/torture involved in his killings. The D.E.N.N.I.S. System 2.0
The Japanese accent had me in tears. I also appreciated when Dennis realized he needed to get out of the “I’m going to have sex with a small Asian boy” zone when he realized he was a caddy. This season is fantastic.
“I need to switch gears.” Ahh, man, that was good.
You need to draw the line. This is the point at which you draw the line. Exactly this.
That exchange was magic.
The show has been on fire so far this season.
FREE BATTERIES!!!!
Fine dining and baseball food!
Free shit, free shit!
The only disappointing part of the ballgame scenes was the missed opportunities to call back to the Chase Utley in Atlantic City episode.
I always enjoy the videos the gang prepares.
A friend showing me Kitten Mittons was what got me into the show. I was totally captivated by Charlie’s persona.
“from the makers of kitten mittens comes….Dick Towel!”

Great Episode to what has been a very solid season. Only the gang could inadvertently lead to a man’s dead outside the bar and with that knowledge in hand, Mac and Charlie pitch Fight Milk instead of revealing the truth first.
I’d thought that the overall quality of the show, despite a few standout episodes each season, had been dropping, but so far, this season has been absolutely fantastic.
The beginning of the episode was all Frank, but ultimately this was a a Dennis episode.
Agree, agree. Dennis was a tour de force in this episode.
I´m a little dissapointed that charlie was writing everything down and they never showed it, also surpised that he got everything right.
I love how the whole gang knows that Charlie is illiterate, yet no one bothers to teach him how to read and write. They just work around it and continue with their day.
That’s what I like about theshow, in any other sitcom it would pass as unbelievable, but they created characters so removed from reality that it’s totally ok, and the “but Charlie doesn’t know how to read” comment is not even a punchline (still funny though)
that’s one schtick I never get tired of.
Totally wanted to see his scribbles too! The Nightman lyrics sheet was one Sunny’s most glorious moments.
Oh yes. Charlie’s notes must have been GOLD. I’m amazed they didn’t show him with a crayon in his hand.
I was thinking of Charlie’s dreambook the whole time he was writing.
We haven’t visually seen any of Charlie’s writings since the dream book and only his lyrics for Nightman before that.
I really wanted to see Charlie’s interpretations of Frank’s orders.
We also saw the instructions for stalking/helping the waitress
amazing episode, frank as a savvy buisnesman was genious. Did I just did your job?
Charlie was wearing his yellow day man shirt. That was the first callback I noticed in the episode.
Nice catch. Don’t think I ever noticed the white collar on Day Man before.
fantastic catch.
Nice!
Outstanding.
I wonder if that was planned, or if they just had that it sitting around in wardrobe.
Very astute.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoys Dee’s boner jokes.
I don’t want to be friends with anyone who DOESN’T enjoy Dee’s boner jokes.
*nods at FZKilla*
Any large flightless bird making jokes about boners is ok in my book.
All hail the Warthog!
That is the perfect nickname for him. I was dying when I heard it.
Better accent: Dee’s Canadian or Charlie’s Japanese?
Also, Dee’s Irish accent is still my favorite, followed by her Puerto Rican one.
someone needs to do a supercut of all the gang’s accents. Make my dreams a reality, internets!!
What about Mac’s polish accent?!?!
Charlie’s Japanese given the situation. Dee’s wasn’t insulting the people she was talking to. Charlie actually thought he was helping translate.
The name “Vic Vinegar” was a callback to the real estate episode where Dennis was “Hugh Honey”
Also Dennis’ sexual deviancies never fails to delight me to no end.
Boom! We got your waallet! Boom! We got your credit cards!
I also remembered the Vic Vinegar call back. They’re partners in real estate and they’re partners in life.
Totally blanked on Vic Vinegar. Shame on me.
Poor Mac lied himself out of a beer.
He shouldn’t have said he was the bodyguard.
I think I enjoy Dennis’ sociopathic behavior more than Charlie’s illiteracy.
