Thanks for nothing, television news cycle. Apparently, on the eve of an election, everyone in the TV news world has taken the day off for early voting, leaving me with nothing of interest to talk about. It’s probably for the best because it allows me to remind everyone of one of the best scenes of one of the best shows on television: West Wing. It’s also a reminder of simpler times, when elections were about smart versus dumb instead of rich against really rich.
The scene comes at the end of season three, after the agent (Mark Harmon) assigned to protect C.J. Cregg is gunned down in a random act of violence. President Bartlet (Martin Sheen) has a run in with Florida Governor Robert Ritchie, his opponent in his re-election. Ritchie is clearly modeled after George W. Bush, but he actually is a closer proximation to Texas Governor Rick Perry. The conversation starts out innocently enough, but soon turns to elitism vs. anti-intellectualism, and before the scene is over, President Bartlet drops one of the most bad-ass lines in the series. Watch:
Note to future political candidates: “Crime. Boy, I don’t know,” is never the appropriate response to the senseless death of an FBI Agent.

All the mics in the world dropped after that verbal ownage.
Great scene, right up there with Bartlett talking to god at the end of Two Cathedrals. I would be so on board with a Jed Bartlett – Arnie Vinick bi-partisan ticket.
thats not Bill Pullman in ID4
“We will not go quietly into the night!” We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on! We’re going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day! “.
“Welcome to Amerffica!”
- President Will Smith’s future inauguration speech.
The death of Harmon’s character was senseless in that no trained agent would just assume the room was clear and walk up to the counter like that.
It was all a government cover-up so dude could go run NCIS.
I’m amused by the thought that the right wingers wouldn’t call Jed Bartlett a Communist.
Political discourse has moved on since this was filmed, plus Jed’s white, so he gets more of a pass.
Part of me really wishes we could go back to smart-vs-dumb elections, but then another part of me wonders why the hell dumb is even viable.
best president on the big screen goes to Jeff Bridges in The Contender.

Obligatory President David Palmer mention.
Harmon’s character was a Secret Service agent.
I love that line, even though Bartlet was a dick. I’m not a fan of someone whose idea of humor when they’ve spent their entire life being entitled is to still condescend and insult people.
I agree that he did condescend pretty frequently, but I don’t think that was his humor. If you watch carefully there are places where he finds something that he thinks is funny or amusing. But those are pretty rare.
Agreed. I loved the first few years of the West Wing, until Sorkin’s condescending arrogance came through to Bartlett’s character. I don’t want a President like this. A real leader doesn’t act with that kind of classlessness.
well Sorkin only ran the first few years of the West Wing, so…
FBI, really? Come on now. Donovan was a Secret Service agent.
We can all agree that Sheen/Bartlett is a condescending douchebag? Awesome!
aww don’t take it out on Bartlett just because tomorrow is going to be a bad day for you.
Why? What’s tomorrow?
Ya, that go to Gov college line was pretty dickish.
I’d rather have a guy smarter than me, condescending, running the country, than some dumbshit or a liar or an opportunist who latches onto whichever position will get him elected.
Preach
Yeah, I’m not voting for Obama either.
Admitting someone was smarter then me was my first step toward sanity.
