How many new Big Four network shows do you look forward to every week?
Because my list is awfully short: Ben and Kate, maybe Go On, Revolution sort of...and that's about it. The 2012-2013 TV season hasn't been a memorable one so far, with no one show proving itself to be this year's New Girl or Suburgatory. So I thought it'd be interesting to look at every season of new shows since 2002-2003 (a relatively arbitrary starting point), and determine which year has been the most *fart noise*
But instead of going by critical consensus and personal taste (HAPPY ENDINGS YEAR WINS), I used a SCIENCE "formula": I divided how many scripted, non-reality shows were canceled in season one by how many total shows aired, giving us a success rate percentage. (Obviously, this isn't a perfect way of doing things, because The Big Bang Theory wasn't canned after negative-two episodes, but it's fair.) Let's have a look.

2012-2013

By my count, 18 new shows have already premiered on the Big Four, with approximately 17 more to come during midseason or some other point next year. Of the 18, five have already been canceled: Made in Jersey, Partners, 666 Park Avenue, Last Resort, and Animal Practice. Let's say 32 shows premiere during the 2012-2013 season, including those which haven't debuted yet — for this to be the worst season in the past decade, which currently goes to the top-heavy 2010-2011 season, at least 25 series need to be canned. ONLY 20 MORE TO GO.

Knights of Prosperity= WILDLY underrated
Yes, it was. And it introduced me to Sofia Vergara, and for that I will be forever grateful.
Yes. This.
Thank Dog I know how to use the internet to obtain superior entertainment choices because I just can’t stomach watching commercials anymore. Nor the shitty shows that surround them.
Hang on. Lone Star was a standout show? It was canceled after 3 episodes…
I think they’re speaking of quality, not quantity. I *heard* good things about it, but as usual, I am part of the problem as I did not tune in.
Lone Star had the potential to be an outstanding drama. But it was scheduled terribly and promoted worse. The lead actor was really good and I see he still hasn’t caught on other than as a TV guest star or with small movie roles.
Go On is surprisingly good. I’m not a Matthew Perry fan either. Nor am I Matthew Perry.
Kitchen Confidential was one of the best shows ever cancelled early. I’m still mad about it’s cancellation
I caught it a couple years ago, and it is surprisingly fantastic. I feel like if it had aired a few years later, it would have been a lot more popular. I’m still pissed Better Off Ted got cancelled. ABC fucked up so badly with that show.
I’m glad i’m not the only one who thought it was awesome, heck i think if KC was on netflix it would get more love.
I loved Better off Ted too
How many new Big Four network shows do you look forward to every week?
Zero. So many other things to not waste my time on. (or waste my time on, depending on how you look at it)
I notice a pattern in that I watch about 3 to 5 new shows per season and typically 1-2 of them are renewed. Typically 1-2 of the cancelled shows I lament the passing of, and 1 of the renewed shows I could have lived without.
How long until the big networks realize that dumbing down everything and trying not to offend the easily offended (the PTC) will continue to lose them viewers to FX, AMC, etc.?
Also I think Carpoolers was underrated. T.J. Miller as Marmaduke = gold
“Dasher? That’s a stupid name! My name’s Marmaduke!”
Every year, new shows come out and are promoted like they are a new, innovative thing. Meanwhile, 99.9% of them seem to be recycled ideas from shows that were cancelled from the previous year. The only difference is the name of the title is different and the cast is slightly different. So what’s the point of watching when you have seen the same show fail the previous year? Eventually, you just tune these new shows out, I guess.
Possibly unrelated, but are you gonna do a best tv shows of the 2012-2013 season list? Cause I can’t seem to find the 2011-2012 list (in which Breaking Bad would crush everything else).
Oh Jewel Staite, you will always be my unicorn.
That gif of Anna Friel. Why is she not in more things?!
I can’t speak to the accuracy of the question posed. I can say that me and my wife are 2 of the 3 people on earth still bummed that New Amsterdam never made it as a series.
I really enjoyed New Amsterdam, good cast, novel premise.. It never had a chance with the WGA strike, though. It made it what, seven episodes? And they tried to cram an entire season of plot twists into the last few to make up for it. And Fox is ruthless with underperforming shows.
I know you only did the big four but Lights Out and Terriers were criminally underrated. As were Greg the Bunny and Titus.
