Save for The Daily Show and Colbert, and Jimmy Fallon’s musical performances, and whatever viral videos Jimmy Kimmel spins out on a weekly basis, I don’t watch too much late-night anymore. I grew up on Dave, and right up until I had kids, I honest to God rarely missed a show. It was part of my morning routine: While the rest of America was eyeballing Matt Lauer, I was watching the previous night’s Letterman show. But now? It takes a lot more to draw me toward the late night shows. I do love it, however, when one host appears on another host’s show. There are few things as fun as seeing Jon Stewart on Dave, or Conan on Dave, or Dave on Conan, although you’ll notice that no one ever appears on Leno’s show. That’s because Leno is a weasel.
Anyway, Dave was on Kimmel last night, and Kimmel — who is filming in Brooklyn this week — adorably fawned over Dave almost as much as Jon Stewart typically does. It’s strange seeing Dave in the guest’s chair, and it has a way of making him look as old as he is (65). What was remarkable, however, was that Dave returned the admiration, a rarity for Dave. I don’t know what Kimmel’s response off-camera to Dave’s adulation was after the interview, but I suspect he has never felt as good as he did last night after the interview. Good for Kimmel. He (probably) deserves it.

Kimmel’s late night show is the best one at this point.
I’ve been recording Ferguson lately. It’s just unhinged enough to remind why I used my first (’86?) VCR to tape Dave.
And apparently it’s harder to work out my brain.
I have to say that Ferguson is my hands down winner. For me it’s a perfect blend of old school Dave and earlier Conan. In other words, perfect.
Ferguson is good, but it’s just a little too dorky. I don’t know, i’m not into absurdity just for absurdity’s sake. Kimmel’s every-man charm is easy to identify with, he’s kind of a dick – which i like, his show is underrated in how different it is from the others, he easily has the best monologue out of everyone, his influences (Stern and Letterman) are the perfect combination for what is IMO the best sense of humor, etc. he’s the man
The trouble with Kimmel is that irresistible sensation that I want to repeatedly punch him. Not sure why. But I do find the show hilarious.
weird, i have an irresistible sensation to get some pizza and beer with him and talk shit on people
I watched Ferguson here and there, but recently I’ve been recording him every night. He gets a little repetitive sometimes (like all of them do) but overall he’s pretty goddamn funny, and definitely a little twisted. And he’s definitely banging the hot network exec, if that’s even really what she is.
“I suspect he has never felt as good as he did last night after the interview”
I bet thats true even after high fiving the president.
Maybe the day Silverman moved her annoying whiny not-funny ass out of his house?
Thats mean.
Hi! Welcome to the internet!
Honest question: Has Dave Letterman ever been funny? Or was he considered edgy enough in the early 80s that it passed for funny?
Yeah, he was really funny/loopy/inventive back in the 80′s. It wasn’t so much laugh-out-loud jokes as a parody of a traditional talk show. You’d just sort of chuckle through the first half hour (nobody ever watches the second half-hour, do they?) and every now and then they would pull something completely unexpected. Once he got the big money, and pretty much since the heart attack, he’s just repeated the same lame jokes night after night…and because the audience doesn’t stop laughing, he still thinks he’s great (or he doesn’t care).
Letterman still rocks.
Letterman also gets points for following Carson’s model and getting some exposure for otherwise unknown personalities. Usually comics,
And c’mon, late night shows aren’t generally for new and edgy stuff, especially on network channels. They’re for old people. That’s why Colbert gets the edgy stuff like offering Trump money if he can teabag him.
Letterman is still a prick.
that’s what’s so great about him. nice guys like jimmy fallon are fine to be around in real life, but that type of personality isn’t funny or fun to watch on tv and that’s why despite his show being pretty innovative he’s still a fucking doofus. asshole = funny
