That headline could actually use a few more descriptions. “Here’s the trailer for Office creator Ricky Gervais’ mentally disabled, please don’t use the R-word, comedy/drama that already aired on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom to much controversy, and will make its way to the United States sometime next year via Netflix, Derek.”
Or according to the show’s official website:
Derek Noakes is a tender, innocent man whose love for his job and the people he cares for shines through. He’s 49, adores animals, Rolf Harris, Jesus, Deal or No Deal, Million Pound Drop, and Britain’s Got Talent – but his main hobby is autograph hunting. Derek works in a retirement home with his mate and landlord, Dougie. Derek cares deeply for old people because they’re kind and funny and tell him stories about the olden days. Hannah is a care worker at the home and is Derek’s best friend. She’s smart, witty and hard-working, but unlucky in love, and, like Derek, always puts other people first. (Via)
The trailer’s below, but be forewarned, despite the presence of Gervais (and Gervais’ Hitler hair) and the brilliant Karl Pilkington, there’s nary a laugh to be found. Derek looks like it’s trying to appeal to the same people who own I Am Sam and Jack, and not Extras, on DVD. Still funnier than Life’s Too Short, though.

is this condescending or heartwarming or just stupid? I already don’t care.
Think you got your headline out of order. “Ricky Gervais” comes *after* “Mentally Challenged”
*golf clap*
The world asked a single question, “Can Carl Pilkington act?”
I’ve seen the pilot. No he can not.
Life’s too Short is awesome! You’ve obviously missed the Johnny Depp/Liam Neeson scenes. Google them now!
when johnny depp asked him to do lord of the dance = comedy gold!!
Those were the only scenes that were remotely amusing. The rest of that show was badly judged bullshit.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Liam Neeson on Life’s Too Short was one of my favorite comedic moments from television this past year.
Well, I need to see the entire pilot before trashing it. The trailer doesn’t say much but knowing Rick Gervais previous work and that he is extremely ironic, I think he is able to make a trailer just to f**** with our heads.
PS: The pilot is already available on the web.
‘Jack’ or ‘Simple Jack’, ’cause I’d watch that show.
I used to follow Ricky Gervais on twitter and when this premiered in the UK he would like pick twitter fights with people who thought it was offensive or just not good in general. I … Don’t follow Ricky Gervais on twitter anymore.
It seems like Gervais is now more concerned with making people cringe than he is with making them laugh.
Did you get that vibe from him after his second stand up special which was 90 minutes of “You’re fat and lazy and I used to be but I’m not now so I’m better than you”.
Oh Ricky, never go full R-Word.
The first episode of this aired quite a while ago in the UK and it was actually not bad, a lot better than Life’s too Short, thats for sure and i even thought pilkington wasn’t bad in it, even if he is just playing himself. It was even quite touching in some parts.
I’m concerned for those whom this didn’t make laugh.
