Two major events went down in last night’s excellent Happy Endings, “To Serb with Love”: Brad made a Dave Chappelle/LexisNexis joke, and we learned the origin of Alex’s eating habits. Sure, other stuff happened, too, like an in-love Penny making a Breaking Bad reference (“Spin class or chemistry class? It’s like Breaking Bad in here! Sit down, let’s cook!”), Jane dressing up as Gallagher, and we met the rest of the Kerovich clan, but, if you’ll allow me to speak for Danger for a moment, BRAD MADE A DAVE CHAPPELLE/LEXISNEXIS JOKE. That has to be the most obscure reference that everyone gets and thinks is funny, but isn’t exactly sure why.
As for the other milestone: Alex was trained as a child by her mother to ignore salad, go straight for the meats at the buffet, and to make eyes with the man carving the dead animals. That’s good advice. Airplane! star Julie Hagerty was the perfect choice to play Mama Kerkovich; she’s a pro at the same wide-eyed, sweet naivety that defines Alex as a character. Likewise, Jane’s constant attempts to please come straight from her dad, Shooter McGavin, who only finds joy in the finer things in life. Like The Chevy Chase Show. And LexisNexis jokes.

Brad is always right about “corn-play,” but never about Coldplay. (Via)

One time, when I was 12, a girl I had a crush on said that if I was any member of *NSYNC, I’d be Joey Fatone, because fat one. Thirteen years later, that insult still stings (though not as much as the Roz burn). I’M MORE OF A CHRIS KIRKPATRICK, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. (Via)

Ron Swanson and the Kerkovich family would get along swimmingly. (Via)

Mr. Kerkovich, big fan of Chevy Chase. Not his work in Caddyshack or National Lampoon’s Vacation, though, but Chevy Chase: talk show host. He also loves The Late Show Starring Joan Rivers, Thicke of the Night, and The Magic Hour, the poor guy. (Via)

LADIES: this is what every guy wants to hear. “Mmm, tell me more about this human trafficking.” (Via)

How long do you think it took the writers before they decided Jane should be Gallagher? The Dice Man must have been an option at some point, and now I want to see Eliza Couple wearing sunglasses with a leather jacket slung over her shoulder. “DUCK DUCK GOOSE? MORE LIKE F*CK F*CK MY GOOSE.” (Via)

That’s Kulap Vilaysack, the host of the Who Charted podcast. Scott Aukerman is one lucky fellow. (Via)

Jane Gallager gave me the weirdest boner ever.
Mmm, Kulap. I’m glad Max didn’t get angry at her crazy. Even if she never shows up again, just knowing that helps (though I want her to show again).
And they missed an opportunity withholding a Community/Chevy reference. They’ve got to know that the “multi-camera-sitcoms-devoid-of-laugh-track-that-are-underperforming-compared-to-hit-but-lowest-common-denominator” shows have common audiences.
I am disappointed that there is no GIF of Alex and her mom giving sexy eyes to the guy at the meat station
As soon as I saw who was playing her mom, I knew we were in for some comedy gold. Excellent casting… and Shooter McGavin as the dad? Wildly inspired.
Would have loved to see Dave get all angry…. but hes such a passive guy. instead his “say anything” moment could have used a 1980′s boombox……… overhead!
Jane as Gallager=Awesome. The continued over the top insanity of Penny, not so much.
Good episode
Before the episode aired, I was not stoked on the casting department’s take on the elder Kerkovitches. I…I was wrong. And I’m sorry.
McDonald was awesome, but Hagerty was a bit grating. I guess they did want someone like Alex but I did not see it.
Grating or not, she was looking pretty damn good, considering she looked pretty “hagert” (wakka wakka) in Airplane!.
I was really hoping McDonald would at least drop the “I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast” line. Or bust out and dust off his old T-Birds jacket. Now that would have been great. Don’t act like you didn’t see Grease 2.
HOLY CRAP HE’S GOOSE.
McDonald unable to control himself after Jane’s accident was priceless.
I’ve been waiting for that Jane-as-Gallagher-gif all day!
That made me feel funny things.
i must have missed the chappelle/lexusnexis joke, what was it?
Yeah, I missed it too. Dish!
I am lost as well….. may just have to google it.
I heard the joke and it although it was funny on its own am I missing something? Is there some deeper meaning to Chappelle and Lexus Nexis?
Jane says something about doing research to come up with jokes to make her dad laugh, to which Brad says, “Comedy’s all about research babe, that’s why Dave Chapelle has two LexisNexis accounts.”
I thought it was pretty funny.
I wish that “party with you forever” included Ku-ku’s little “Yay!” gesture, which was enjoyable to see.
that “party with you forever” .gif*
I wanna party with insane Nickel forever too.
Nickel……. or nichol……… was a nice offset to Penny in this episode..
“A Nickel is worth five times as much as a Penny.”
Hilarious and vindictive.
Imeester3 is the Rozziest.
Who Charted is probably my favorite podcast. Either that or the Frotcast.
I’d have to agree with you there… clearly just commenting for badges…
I think you guys should have also mentioned how ridiculous Shooter McGavin’s laugh face was. Because it was.
Do you all think he was shut out of the main cast’s inner circle too? Just like Megan Mullally? Do you think he even noticed!?
I don’t think this guy even watches Happy Endings
I thought the Penny/Nickle thing was a lot funnier than it really was. Kudos to the writers….
This was ah-mah-zing.
It was pretty darn clever. Especially with her correcting Max, “It’s Nicole.” Ha!
I just started watching the show this season and I must say it’s making a serious run at the #3 spot on my prestigious best comedy on TV list, currently held by “Archer.” So of course I come to love this show and discover that it’s just as close to being cancelled as “Community” and Parks & Rec.” Fuck you America.
“Ron Swanson and the Kerkovich family would get along swimmingly”
Do I smell a cross-over after both shows are cancelled and moved over FX next season?
I would be OK with this as long as there’s an appearance by Sniper Tim.
“Ron and the Kerkovich family go to an all you can eat steak buffet. While Ben enlists Dave advice to get his low-cal calzone zone food truck off the ground.”
“Parks and Recreendings.” You’re welcome, America.
They can compete with the Cougar Town / Community crossover once TBS picks up the Greendale crew.
“Could the word ‘eunuch’ be a verb???”
“No, it’s a place mom.”
That was my favourite part last night.
Yes.
Loved the Penny/Nickel gag.
Julie Hagerty has aged really well.
That’s all I have to say
Missed it last night. I’m thinking about leaving work early to go home and watch it…or quitting.
This show couldn’t be more perfect
Let’s talk about how hard I would plow Nickle
Her face is the size of a normal person’s face except three times as large. She also appeared to be constantly train wrecked on MDMA, which is sort of sexy I guess.
But Jane dressed as Gallagher made my night!
KULAP! yay
I have to admit, the last few episodes were ok, but this one really nailed it.
I’ve worked “Next slide please” into two different conversations today. The random looks were totally worth it.
That a show this smart, with such great timing, can still bring the fastball on the physical / slapstick comedy is impressive. You got the Jane Gallagher bit but Max getting literally fifth-wheeled right out of the booth, twice, was great as well.
/ Next slide please!
Regardless of who Shooter plays, he’ll always be a dick to me
UMMM I think you’re missing the most important Kulap Vilaysack fun fact here, which is SHE’S BEN WYATT’S STEP-MOM, ULANI.
My mind was totally blown when i saw her AND they made an immediate Breaking Bad reference. Given she is Mike Ehrementraut’s wife, and all
I tried to explain that to my wife last night. Not happening.
Holy tits, that’s impressive.
Well played SisterJac… well played indeed!
Thanks everyone, I like your enthusiasm with this fun fact.
As soon as I saw her, I made the Parks & Recs connection. You’re not the only one with too much time on their hands for useless information, SisterJac!
She was also Michael Scott’s sharpie-marked love-interest for their Christmas episode several years ago.
