(UPDATE: Due to the heartbreaking, tragic and utterly senseless events of this afternoon, we here at UPROXX, along with Marc, felt it best to postpone today’s scheduled live Q&A. We’re working on rescheduling it for some time in the near future. We’ll let you know as soon as we get a time and date nailed down. In the meantime, go hug the people you love.)
Oh boy, this should be interesting: today we’re welcoming Marc Maron, a vastly under-appreciated comedian and the host of WTF with Marc Maron — one of the more popular podcasts going these days, which is broadcast twice weekly from his California garage — in for a live Q and A with you guys, our wonderful readers. In a 2011 New York Times profile, Maron’s podcast is accurately described as a “cult hit and a must-listen in show business and comedy circles. The success of the show has everything to do with its perceptive, prickly host and his ability to coax surprisingly revealing things from his guests.” I’d add that it also offers some of the more revealing, insightful interviews of comedians and funny people you’ll ever find.
You may also know Marc from his more than 40 appearances on Conan O’Brien’s late night shows, as well as numerous appearances on Letterman. He was also the host of a daily Air America program called Morning Sedition back when Air America was still a thing, and just so happened to co-star in one of my favorite episodes from this past season of Louie. Marc has numerous cats, is developing a sitcom for IFC, has a book coming out next year and currently has a limited edition DVD set of the first 100 WTF episodes available for purchase here.
The chat is scheduled to begin at 2 PM EST, and will go for about an hour or so, which will give you all plenty of time to come up with questions for him. With that said, here are a couple of tips to help this all run smoothly as possible: 1) Begin your questions to Marc with “@Marc” or “@Marc Maron” to keep things organized and allow him to find your questions easily, and 2) Feel free to load up some questions ahead of time. This should be fun.
Now, let’s do this!

FYI, you guys…pasting an update I made to the post up top: Due to the heartbreaking, tragic, utterly senseless events of this afternoon, we here at UPROXX, along with Marc, felt it best to postpone today’s scheduled live Q&A. We’re working on rescheduling it for some time next week. We’ll let you know as soon as we get a time and date nailed down. In the meantime, go hug the people you love.
Well done. So sorry to hear this happened.
Holy shit! 20 dead??!?! Children?!?!
Hey postpone away. No problem at all.
Yeah, it’s beyond terrible. I just want to go sit somewhere by myself and cry.
Good call. Thank you for postponing this.
@Marc — do you believe there’s such a thing as “too soon,” or has Twitter destroyed whatever that used to mean? If so, is that a good thing? In other words, is there a way to craft a joke about something as senselessly tragic as what happened earlier today? #realtalk
@Marc — you just mentioned on Twitter that King Crimson is making your cats nervous. So, my question for you is: why do people love the shit out of In the Court of the Crimson King when Red is clearly superior? Thank you for your time.
@Marc, what advice do you have for aspiring younger comics? Is it easier or more difficult for comic to grow in the internet era with more outlets but considerable more “comedians”?
@Marc, Thanks for doing this.
I’m just getting my start in Stand-up, in Boston, but I’m nearing 40 and about to start a family. My question is: can one get any good without doing a lot of road-work? Can I stay local? My wife loves you (Platonically, I hope), and your answer will go a long way in our discussions.
Thanks again, I’ll take my answer off-air.
@Marc – Does the girlfriend google your name?
@Marc Are there any cameos, or episodes of your show that you are especially excited for viewers to see?
@Marc On a nightmare sitcom bullshit scale of FX to NBC, how is working with IFC going?
@Marc: Will the IFC show have this — [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Uzyd4Yv8PQ] — Boomie lives on!
Please don’t answer that because I am a horrible person who can’t even type the simplest freakin’ questions with a link that works. Sorry for wasting your time.
@Marc, do you actively plan for the next step, like what would you consider as life after “WTF”?
@Marc I told one of my friends about this Q&A and he said at some point you called him a “hurtful douche.” He wanted me to tell you he’s sorry and that he has finally warmed to you. [26.media.tumblr.com]
@Marc I won’t mention specific people, but you’ve had some comics on the podcast who might be considered ‘hacks’. Some of these guys have been telling jokes on stage for years and years though, and have put in some serious time. Is there any respect from you and from the comedy scene in general for these guys who are workhorses, but don’t necessarily come up with the best material?
Also, while I’m at it, you’re way deeper into radio than almost any other working comedian. What appeals to you about the format? Aside from being able to torment Air America?
@Marc Loved your cameo in “Sleepwalk With Me”. How did that come together?
@Marc, you’re regarded by many (at least me and my bros) as one of the kings of the “alternative comedy” style. Who are some of the younger comics that you’ve followed or work with that you’d recommend?
@Marc…You’ve talked on your podcast before about “bad comedy towns” — places comedians loathe to go and perform at. What are some of the worst, in your opinion?
@Marc As a fellow over-caffeinated coffee “enthusiast” (sounds better than addict) what’s your preferred home brew method these days? I got an AeroPress last winter and it’s great for single cups but given the overall volume of coffee I go through that’s not enough. I’ve been using an automatic drip machine for years now but it’s never quite the same as in the coffeeshops. On a related note are burr grinders worth the cost?
Also, as a Madison resident I’ve been shitting my pants with Just Coffee since I met those dudes in 2003. Thanks for teaming up with them.
@Marc, do you still hold the record for the most appearances on Conan O’Brien’s late night shows, and have you ever taken advantage of that by demanding ridiculous items in the green room?
@Marc — Do you like dogs?
What?
Dags? DaYaLikeDags?
@Marc, as a longtime fan and someone who was influenced by your comedy as a teen in the 90s, what would you say is the difference, if any, between your perspective when you were coming up as a young stand-up and now as you’ve found this incredible niche with your podcast?
(And I’m not trying to call you old.)
@Marc — You’re famous, so people must yell at you on the streets and/or supermarket every day. Which repeated quote of yours do you hear most often?
@Marc — Would you prefer to fight 100 duck-sized horses, or one horse-sized duck? If it helps in making your decision, the duck is a hoarder and the horses are very sarcastic.
@Marc – Are there any guests who won’t do your show because they’re allergic to your cats?
@Marc What is the worst experience you’ve ever had while performing stand-up?
@Marc, I’ve been a fan of yours for almost 20 years, going back before you hosted SAST. You even did a man on the street interview with me for it in Washington Square Park.
1-Do you miss NYC and think you’ll come back?
2-Does it frustrate you that you’re more well known for your podcast than your standup?
3-Do your own questions ever make you uncomfortable?
4-Have you ever touched a nerve with someone that you didn’t really mean to touch?
@Marc Besides Ricky Gervais and Joan Rivers, who you’ve voiced your displeasure for, are there any other comedians that you’re not too wild about? Kathy Griffin? The people* want dirt!!
*me
@Marc what are your honest thoughts on Pete Holmes’ YMIW podcast? Also, how much of the back and forth between you, Chelsea, and Pete was honest complaint from you about Pete having Chelsea interview him for his 100th podcast?
Interested to see the answer on this one. I just want comedians to keep it crispy, conflict is bad
Damn straight. Definitely gotta keep it crispy.
@Marc Who is your least favourite comedian (besides Gallagher) that you’ve had to interview? Go on, you can tell us.
@Marc Is there any chance of bringing the WTF live show on tour internationally? And when will the “Maron” TV show hit the air?
Great episode with Dylan Moran, btw.
@Marc Maron – How did you come to voice a squirrel on Adventure Time (Best squirrel, by the way!)?
@Marc Is there any plans to shoot any of the live WTF shows for a DVD/youtube/livestream? The live shows always sound like a blast and I wanna crash that party without actually having to put any pants on.
Also in the Rachael Harris interview, there was some crazy chemistry between you two. Not to get all frat bro on you, but you totes could’ve banged her! *flips up collar on polo shirt*
