There’s word that NBC brass are ruminating over Jay Leno’s future — which would involve finally giving their current late-late guy comic, Jimmy Fallon, the coveted job as the host of The Tonight Show.
The latest rumblings about Leno [whose contract expires in 2014] come from various talent agents who admit they have quietly been contacted by NBC officials hoping to find a new late-late host who will eventually take over Fallon’s 12:35 a.m. time slot. (Via)
If Louie taught us anything last season, it’s that Chloë Sevigny will make you perform sexual acts on her in public, never visit Boston, and that this kind of anonymous late night gossip is often just a ploy for people to get people paid more (or less) money. It also showed us #tonightshowlouie2014.

I’d watch that.

The only way you’ll ever get The Tonight Show from Jay Leno is from his cold dead hands.
Whatever it takes. And I can’t stand Fallon. Just want to be able to watch last night’s Ferguson before the missus falls asleep.
I hope this story makes its way into Conan and Dave’s monologue tonight.
No rush — Dave repeats the same damn joke every night, or at least every time I happen to tune in.
All the late night hosts are talented, but the format needs to be retired or rethought.
The “this is in the news” setup will never die.
Yeah, I think the people who do the best work are the ones who think outside the box. Like the stupid/crazy stunts that Letterman pulled back in the day, or Ferguson’s unscripted monologues.
Like, I looooove Letterman as a comedian/person, but I find myself only watching the highlights of his show on YouTube these days.
Yeah I really enjoy the odd things Letterman does, like having people acting as neighbors telling them to keep the noise down or having weird noises play at random times. I especially miss the more out-there days of Conan. Now instead of his announcer chiming in with something weird to say, out will pop Deion Cole with another installment of “Damn you white people are different from black people”
eh, i find the basic structure of late night comforting. even fallon still follows the basic structure, just instead of a 2nd interview segment with the big guest he’ll do a game instead. it’s not THAT groundbreaking. now would i want it to be. i think Kimmel’s show is perfect, mainly because his monologue is basically just his version of The Soup and other little pop culture bits of the day and it’s perfect.
I can’t wait to see Jimmy Fallon host the Tonight Show for 7 months!
I’m ready for the 10 PM Jay Leno Show!
So instead of giving Connan his rightfull place they are giving it to… Jimmy Fallon
That’s OK. After 6 months, Fallon will be ousted and he’ll be following Conan on TBS.
Then it’ll be Jay Leno on the Tonight Show and Late Night with George Lopez.
I will say that Fallon has really, really come into his own as a talk show host. Reminds me a lot of Conan after the first few seasons were out of his system.
That said, there’s another late night host who would fit much better with the Leno demographic while still maintaining a fast-and-loose creativity that comedy fans would appreciate. If only Craig Ferguson didn’t seem so happy to remain underwatched so he can get away with whatever he wants.
i don’t think you know who jay leno’s demographic is if you think they’d accept Ferguson. they wouldn’t even accept Conan and he’s basically just an American Ferguson. so offbeat AND a foreigner? those old conservatives would fucking hate him.
those old conservatives are dying and being replaced by people who grew up post 60′s. the demographic is changing and quickly. fallon will land at just the right time. he is well liked and pally with the new hollywood generation and is mainstream enough for the big show. conan was never going to work at that time and neither will ferguson. fallon may be lightweight but that’s exactly how you get your foot in the door. don’t be controversial and don’t be threatening. sadly, that rules out ferguson, just like conan.
kimmel is still the most entertaining he has a healthy amount of disrespect that the audience secretly wants without being a dick.. fallon hasn’t got there yet and leno is a disgrace in that department.
pretty spot on, though that inoffensiveness is exactly why i don’t like Fallon. but i know i’m increasingly in the minority on that. Fallon will never get to that level of disrespect though.
Going younger would make some sense since Kimmel, who has the youngest audience of the three, will be at 11:30 next year sometime. Or did he already make the move? I haven’t been up past 9pm on a weeknight in a year.
These shows are on too late for me to remember to watch. If I’m up past 11:00, I’m drunk or watching reruns of Archer or both.
i rarely watch late night shows live. i just check who the guests are and DVR one or two to watch the next day.
I sure hope it happens. I’d like to be able to watch the good guests that The Tonight Show tends to pull, and although I’m not particularly fond of Fallon, he’s still a likable guy and not really objectionable in any way of which I’m aware.
Fallon seems to be able to pull bigger guests than just about anyone else, including Leno. from what i’ve seen anyway…
Yeah, I wasted half an afternoon just watching interview clips from Fallon and he did seem to get quite few bigger names: Tom Hanks, Bill Cosby, Emma Watson. Random assortment, I know, but I was also watching random interviews.
I was thinking this may be due, in part, to the fact that he used to be on SNL and therefore encountered a lot of bigger names who came through the show to host.
I heard a rumor that Charles Barkley will be talking over the late show after fallon makes the switch.
Fallon is the worst. That is all.
