President Obama just addressed the nation in the wake of the tragedy in Connecticut today.
Reports Fox News:
An emotional President Obama, tearing up as he spoke, said Friday that “our hearts are broken” for the families of the victims in the deadly mass shooting in Connecticut.
“I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do,” Obama said.
The president just cried on national television. That pretty much captures precisely how absolutely terrible today is.

The shutter clicks of a small army of opportunistic photographers make my blood boil.
They’re photojournalists in the White House pressroom, they’re doing what they should be.
Now the TV reporters interviewing the kids coming out of the school can go right on to hell where they belong.
Oh get the fuck off your high horse. This is literally a room intended for the press to talk to and photograph the President.
As has been said, they’re just doing their jobs. Now, the people that are claiming the presidents reaction wasn’t presidential enough/weak/pandering can fuck right off.
I don’t have a problem with him crying, but I’m not entirely sure it was totally sincere.
Maybe it was, but anyone who puts total faith into a crying politician needs to be a bit less naive.
you call it naive, i call it not always being an overly cynical asshole.
In my opinion:
John Boehner crying – Insincere
President Obama crying – Sincere
High horse? Fuck your faces.
Watching Obama speak in that video is like watching his emotional e-meter tick up or down based upon the approval of the photographers as they press their shutters.
Those executioners, that was wrong!
Well where the fuck else should they execute those orphans? It was the Orphans Gallows. That’s where they go to execute orphans. What are you, an orphan?
Substitute rapists for orphans.
That’s good advice no matter what.
I cried watching him.
Fuck, I’m having a hard time trying not to cry posting about how I cried.
I’m with you Pete. Some of the pictures I’ve seen from today are agonizing and absolutely heart breaking. It feels like all we can do is be thankful that are safe today.
Same. I got really upset when they were saying they were finding kids in closets, still hiding.
I cried when he cried too, Pete. That was the second time I cried over this.
I heard the death toll driving to work, and teared up. Just beyond terrible. No words.
Can you imagine how hard Boehner is going to publicly cry on behalf of gun owners if any legislation is proposed in the wake of this?
Ugh, I am so fucking cynical. Sorry.
That was about my second or third thought, too.
The saddest speech ever. All I can think about is those poor kids.
I was off work today. I wish we didn’t have the constant news hitting. I didn’t want to watch but I couldn’t turn it off. I kept cycling between rage, confusion and despair.
I don’t see why kids had to be victims when the shooter could have easily gone after the Kardashians or another group of people harmful to society.
Too soon, man, Just, too soon.
You joke, but, you fail to realize that by them getting shot, they will never leave your pop culture post mortem. They’d enter Hollywood sainthood
In California, the people are all sinners. It’s the places that are saints.
hey hey hey! I’m from California and… fuck it, you’re right.
I didn’t cry at all. Am I the strong, silent type or a soulless sociopath?
Help me out guys.
Maybe you’re desensitized?
As long as you’re not cursing out Obama for crying over this like my co-worker just did, it’s probably not sociopathy.
You don’t need to cry to be affected emotionally by an event. I didn’t cry but it’s still incredibly upsetting and sad to me
I didn’t cry either, but I was angry. Still am.
I thought of my nieces and my 4th grade teaching mother. I’ve been on the verge of tears with those thoughts, but pulled myself back to not go down into those dark depths. I’m depressed enough as it is, thank you.
I have to believe more ppl are killed by guns then are saved by guns (minus police and army), so how many more of these types of incidences need to happen before we make some real changes?!?!? After 9/11 it took about a week before you couldn’t even bring water onto a plane. Are these tragedies somehow less significant? Unfortunately this will probably blow over in a week or so, and nothing will be done. But the straws are building up on the camel’s back. Hopefully it breaks soon than later :S
Not to get all political and shit but; its people who commit the viciuous actgs; not the guns. Beleive me, if amking guns illegal made these stupids acts go away i would support it; but I don’t share your opinion as people will still be vicious assholes.
I remember the wise words a man named Bronn said once; “You can’t cure CUNT”
I think they apply here.
Fuck, can I just once remember to spell check my posts?
I dont think he couldve stabbed 26 people to death Phish.
I wrote that before i saw the chinese guy story. wtf
Yes ppl are the worst. But without the tools available to them, the harm they do will be much less. Yes you can kill with a knife or bat etc, but how many ppl could he have killed with that? Guns make it easier to kill, and to kill many ppl. We can never stop murder or crazy ppl, but we can try to limit the killing power they can get. I am 31 years old, and I have never once in my life needed or wanted a gun for protection (Maybe I am lucky, but I believe I am in the majority). I was in the army cadets and have fired weapons before. But never have I thought we need guns in the home/community. It is a hard topic to handle, hell ppl are still against gay marriage (which hurts no one). But hopefully some more measures will be taken to save and protect ppl here on out :S
P.S Its the internet, spelling has no place here
The problem with that is you presuppose banning or heavily restricting guns will prevent people for using them. That logic failed with alcohol and drugs, and only brought more violence when criminal syndicates took control of the trade the state abandoned.
With the vibrant gun culture in this country, I can easily see that happening if significant gun control is enacted.
I would agree, but I think making guns and ammo is harder than making booze. Also drugs and booze effect the person more than society (minus driving under the influence). I could go to the corner and get heroin and O.D and not really effect any one. But if I go to the corner and buy a gun, I can go out and kill a bunch of ppl.
Carbine
Some guy in China stabbed 22 kids with a knife today. So that many
And of those 22 kids do you know how many died? 0. There are crazy sick fucks all over the world but nowhere are guns more prevalent in a society than in America.
Easy access to weapons makes spree killings and serial killers far more common place in the U.S.A than in a comparable population group in Europe.
My problem with this line of logic is that someone doesn’t need a gun to do that kind of damage it’s simply the easiest and therefore most common method. Anyone determined enough to attempt this sort of thing can access information on homemade weapons and explosives online. Even if we could stop these people from obtaining guns what makes you think they wouldn’t start strapping themselves with homemade pipe bombs before heading to their target instead?
Again, just like you said. Why make it easy. Yeah some crazies might make a bomb etc. But why give ppl the ability to buy semi or even full auto guns and unlimited ammo. How man deer need 100 rounds to kill? The way the laws are set up now are ridiculous
I almost threw up when I saw this this morning. I felt physically ill
Fuck this month, I’m ready to get off.
Unfortunately, there is not much you can to do stop someone that has their mind made up that they are going to do something crazy.
True. Psychopathy is a force of nature, like a hurricane.
So while 20 children were shot to death there was a patrol officer down the street giving out tickets to soccer moms trying to bring revenue to his city.. Why are is there not at least one cop at every school instead patrolling traffic? There should have been a cop in this death toll.. Thats what the fuck they take our money for.
I hate polflawas as much as the next but my spleen runneth over. I am far from a gun nut and I refuse to hide behind the Constitution as far as current firearm laws are involved. My biggest concern is the knee-jerk reaction to gun control that always follows such a tragedy. If I though for a minute that making gun ownership illegal would prevent such heinous acts from occurring I’d be first in line at the polls to make it law. Like it or not screaming for gun control laws is the lazy way to address this problem. Simple, make enough noise to push a bill through and we’re done, right? The evilness that perpetuates these crimes goes far beyond the tools involved, and it’s a far harder problem to fix. Our nation historically has a bad track record as far as criminalizing something that was once legal. It’s no secret that nothing strengthened organized crime more than Prohibition; making something illegal never makes it go away. That monster that murdered those kids had a mission and unfortunately a bunch of words tacked on to our Constitution wouldn’t have prevented him from seeing his evil task through one way or another. Increased gun control is nothing more than a two-asprin-and-call-me-in-the-morning approach to a brain tumor. Sure it’s easy and might make you feel a little better but the problem won’t go away. I’ve always found it amazing that the same folks that say the war on drugs is failing so might as well make it legal (because they like those drugs!) are first in line to say making guns illegal will solve the crime problem (because they don’t like guns!), even though far more people fall as victims of drug addiction in some form than die from illegal gun use.
I don’t have an answer, but maybe an idea. We live in a society where fame and fortune is paramount and no longer has to be earned the old-fashioned way, through work and a touch of corruption. Now it’s supposed to a birth right regardless of current social status; leak a sex tape and your good to go. I would be thrilled if the media would do no more than release the name of the sick bastard and leave it at that, but we know that will never happen. The media will have a field day with this and the only concern will what will bring in the ratings. If you don’t have the skills or good fortune to get famous harmlessly than you might as well get attention through infamy. I’m not saying this was the case with this psycho but the more attention lavished upon him the more encouragement is given to those on the brink.
If you made it through this rant I thank you, regardless of your opinion. What we need now is an endless gif of Corgis playing in a water fountain. If that doesn’t bring peace on earth, I don’t know what will.
