So, here’s the thing…
As you may have noticed, the title of our Happy Endings recap has changed from “Let’s Talk About Last Night’s Episode Of Happy Endings” to “Let’s Talk About This Week’s Episodes Of Happy Endings. ABC’s decision to haphazardly toss an extra episode of the show into their schedule at 10 p.m. on Sundays left us in a bit of a bind (and them, too, given the lackluster results). Rather than do two recaps per week of a show that appears to be in trouble, what we’re going to do is one, jam-packed, double-dip recap and discussion on Wednesday afternoons, until both episodes get bumped once Dancing With the Stars comes back. I’m not particularly happy about any of these developments — hence my choice of banner image for this post — but it was either this or go home, hard boil an egg, and eat it on the toilet. I think this is by far the better alternative.
The highlights are on the following pages, separated by episode. Get it together or I will slap you in the face.

RIP, Tyler the racist parrot.
Finally caught up to this. Eff you, “don’t watch after one week” article!
-it was hard explaining Tyler to my girlfriend, who was watching for the first time with this episode
-Derrick is my buddy’s cousin. This episode reminded me I need to hang out with him more. (not literally the actor, but his cousin is a “Derrick”)
-OH GOD CHAMELEONS
-There’s no issue with focusing on Max. He’s far and away my favorite gay character on TV. I want to see him beat up the wispy one from Glee (it’s not a hate crime if another gay character does it, right?)
Don’t know if anyone else noticed but the pop star was one of the girls from the episode “Baby Steps” when Alex’ store started selling baby tees.
You aren’t going to mention the phrase “deucing the futon?”
“Jerk circle” almost killed me. Dave’s still the worst character, but dude gets some good lines.
I’ve also said “My favorite thing to touch is the…penis.” far too often.
I kind of wanted to see the “sitcom gays”
I was half-expecting it to lead into a joke about that being Derrick’s subculture.
Off topic, but an honorable mention should go to B…in 23 for the “Kick you in the clam” line.
Would prefer two recaps a week. Each episode has so many good lines they deserve separate posts… And I am too old to remember Sunday night’s episode by now.
Elisha Cuthbert is the greatest thing to happen to the world.
I don’t know why everyone’s hating on Dave. He’s seriously one of my favorites. He’s so full of BS that it’s just absolutely hilarious. The gag of his Navajo ancestry is pure gold.
Including Bird Law was absolutely fantastic.
Each episode had some laugh out loud moments, but I was a little disappointed with both. Probably because I so desperately don’t want it to be cancelled that I’m trying to will it to Code War levels of awesomeness.
“How did I hit my stupid big head again?”
Since there isn’t really any other place to do it I’ll do it here. Last night’s New Girl was probably the funniest I’ve seen (I’ve not viewed most of Season 1). When Winston said he wanted crack my brain stopped working for a couple minutes due to humor stimulus overload.
I just sort of half watch that show, but that was a legit great scene. And, the ridiculously detailed story of how smoking crack was a family activity, hilarious.
I completely agree. When he mentioned crack, fire, and cookies, I could not stop my laughter.
New Girl makes me laugh just as much as Happy Endings. excellent show imo.
This show led to a full on discussion of what category of gay everyone I work with would be. Sexual harassment be damned!
Is it just me or did everyone see Dave becoming such a D-bag after the first episode of the series? With Alex leaving him at the altar, they really could have made him into a nice, lovable guy, but I hate him more and more each week. And yet, the series wouldn’t work without him and the “handprint on the thigh” from last night was great. Also, “I forgot the tools and the hardware store is closed. Fresh eyes tomorrow?”
did anyone else find it strange that dave went from being neck-deep in the man-am challenge to hosting a teenie-bopper date in the food truck in what seemed like 5 minutes?
Yes! How the hell did that happen? You don’t see Alex call or text him to come help or anything. He’s just…there.
Its the Navajo in him
Also, when she said, “Did you power wash this place with farts”, my girlfriend said, “AWWWWW Sweetie, you power wash OUR apartment with farts…”
Marry that girl.
Dave being able guess his gay subset correctly even though his logic was wrong was spot on for him.
I loved the Sitcom Gays joke.
“Why do you have socks?” “In case we go dancing.”
I love the logic at work there.
Any amount of this show in a week, is a good amount
unless it’s none
Yes, none sucks. Like this week.
bob’s burgers cross-over:
Phenomimom-con.
I know we commenters suggest that pretty much every show (or at least every comedy) deserves Uproxx Recaps, but man would I love Bob’s Burgers Recaps. Hell, you could do Bob’s Burgers, American Dad, and the ghost of The Simpsons as one big “Fox Sunday Cartoon” Recap. I can take or leave the newer Family Guy episodes though
Bob’s Burgers doesn’t seem to get the love it deserves on this site. Recaps can help change that.
Yeah you could do that but leave out American Dad.
I thought Sunday’s episode was awesome, but then the Max storyline and having Derrick in last nights episode made it just about even.
“I hate the Indians. … I hate Native Americans too.”
We need a B in Apt 23 discussion or combine the two
Cosign
Agreed. That show needs some support. It’s way too good to go unnoticed
Yeah, but what the hell was with last night’s episode being out of order? Suddenly June is back at the coffee shop, Eric Andre is with his ex, I was very confused.
And a troubling lack of Van Der Beek.
It went from a “guilty pleasure” to a show I will publicly support… Mostly because my fan fiction is based on Luther and the Beek traveling around solving crimes… of the heart.
This show has climbed rapidly to the top of my sitcom list… something about how hot Krysten Ritter is to the over-the-top Van Der Beek characfter makes the show. Of course, now that I’m into it, it’s getting canceled, so that blows moose dong.
The opening “clam” line was fantastic. Love the pervy neighbor.
Krysten Ritter is hot in a very weird way. Sort of like Amy Poehler.
Agreed on it being worth of discussion, if it doesn’t fail. Of all the more female led shows that have come out over the past two years B is the best, New Girl a close second.
This week for some reason the clowns coming out of the port-a-potty killed me. Should have seen it coming after the first one, but didn’t. Easy joke, but the delay before the rest started coming out made it. It’s sad to see ABC giving the show the same kind of treatment NBC gave Scrubs season 7.
i’ve grown to kind of hate Apt. 23. i don”t know, it just rubs me the wrong way and i don’t find it particularly funny.
Here’s one thing that can’t be helping the cause… Tuesday at 9 you’ve got GOON, New Girl and Happy Endings. Thank Jebus for Hulu….BUT you can’t watch Happy Endings on Hulu TV, only online.
Also you have to wait a week to watch a new episode of New Girl on Hulu. This scheduling conflict was a huge reason I FINALLY decided to get a DVR
Oh and since we’re not talking about it: June’s rack. Ho.Lee.Shit.
[ia.media-imdb.com]
Not bad for a pair that came in upside down.
It was out of control last night.
For real. The show was amazing too.
That red dress? I’m fairly sure they’re doing that on purpose at this point.
And I’d still give the tip of a finger for an hour with Krysten Ritter.
that link isn’t working. but gonna be honest, i find her face extremely obnoxious. the bangs don’t help.
@Raw Is Leary That’s why paper bags were invented, BOOM roasted.
*drops mic*
still working for me, and so is her rack.
Yes and Yes.
I love her rack and I love when she wears tight sweaters.
“Tyler will miss all of you. Well, not you, Brad.”
Every episode I find myself really annoyed with one character, then they do something to bust me up and all is forgiven. Case in point: Penny running headfirst into the side of the limo. Saw it coming, still laughed.
Does that mean the Hair-met is coming back?
Oh, and my spirit animal is Anthony Edwards.
I liked sundays episode more.
And I really hope this show doesn’t get cancelled or anything, it’s one of the best shows on.
I can’t even remember last night’s episode (thanks a LOT, Justified) let alone Sunday’s. Something about ribs, a pop-star and an awesome fake pop-song, gay bar montage, right?
Jane is very attractive. Someone should point that out.
except for the hair last night. wtf was that??
For real. I do not get that hairstyle at all.
I assumed the hair last night was an effort to make her look more like her doppelgayer.
If/when this show gets shitcanned, it’s going to really hurt.
I got drunk and completely forgot that there was a Happy Endings on Sunday. Now there’s something to watch when I get home.
The reason why the NBA humor is so spot on is Adam Pally who plays Max is a huge NBA fan.
Just started watching this season. Was really digging it but when they started trashing the Heat/Lebron I knew I’d found a new love
I’m impressed they used a real map of Chicago during the gay bar montage, as they have clearly never filmed a second of the show here.
I know…… that always annoyed me…. show some love to the place you are supposed to be located in….
“Tyler and I got into a big argument about what constitutes a Celebrity Apprentice All-Star. I said Melissa Rivers he said Joseph Goebbles.” Goebbles sounded familiar to me, went to Google, oh yeah big Nazi head-honcho. This show is fantastic.
I love that Alex’s recomendation at the restaurant was just “Ribs”.
“Well I don’t have bird defibrillators do I penny?! I saw them in the skymall catalog but Nooooooo I had to have my marshmallow gun. Stupid Brad! Stupid!”
Derrick is a great once in a while kind of character. He’s the show’s Jean-Ralphio, just the right amount of usage. I don’t know how funny he would be if they used him more (like the way Rafi has been on the League lately), but I think his conversations with Penny and Max are always great.
Whoa, The League could be 22 minutes of Rafi doing weird shit and commercials and it would probably be the fifth best comedy on TV.
Oh I didn’t mean Rafi wasn’t great, I was just using him for scale. I meant that I don’t know if Derrick would be as funny if he were on his respective show as much as Rafi is now (but Rafi is hilarious).
“Max Helloooooooo!”
“What”
“Nothing I just hadn’t said hello to you yet. and Hellooooooo!”
It is shocking how much better Elisha Cuthbert has gotten as this show has gone on.
I liked her actually being aware of a joke while Penny wasn’t for a change. Glad they stopped making her a complete fool.
Her comedic timing has improved so much since her days on 24.
Oh come on upther. All her scenes in 24 were fucking HILARIOUS!
That bit with the mountain lion was hilarious.
I thougt all the wordplay using the word “come” was a tad overdone. Dave is still the worst. And Jane in the Lindsay Bluth hair was still hot.
Dave is indeed the worst.
As bad as Dave is, he’s still no Manny.
Dave is the worst, but he cracked me up with the Already won the pissing contest.
Just seeing Dave’s food truck, “Steak Me Home Tonight”, always gets me.
Plus his (paraphrasing) “Every customer gets the VIP treatment” line, right after Alex made a point to tell the pop star and her date that they’d get treated as normal folk for the night, had me rolling. He’s such a oblivious tool that I can’t help but like him
But Dave being the worst is actually the best. He’s no Dave Mosby, thank god.
Very disappointed that Sunday’s episode (the one that needed to be good) was the worst of the season, but last night’s was back on track.
Yeah I thought Sunday was more hit and miss than usually. Last night was great though
Lit is the shit!. I still have Lit songs on my IPOD.
They’re no Smash Mouth.
Brad being the trophy husband was fantastic, but dimmer switch was filled with cliches. I hope the writers aren’t just using Jane’s breadwinner status as the basis for all Brad plots.
Max, once again, was fantastic last night.
The guy who plays Max has really stepped up his game, which only increases the distance between the rest of the cast and Dave. Kudos to the writers/creator for creating a character who is gay rather than a gay character.
Great reminder to share this GIF. Can’t re-use this line fast enough. [thetvscreen.me]
Also, “It smells like testosterone in here. Also, Dave, you smell like peppers buddy.”
The fixing of the dimmer switch really needed a musical montage.
Jane had Lindsay Bluth hair.
Some day, we’ll get the ultimate.
