If you are anything like me, you spent the majority of your holidays parked in front of a television watching some combination of Law & Order, football, and strange movies with titles like The Dog Who Saved the Holidays (starring Dean Cain and Joey Lawrence!). In doing so, you probably also saw the commercial for the upcoming season of Justified a few dozen times, and it made you squee like teenage girl. “Hey, loogit,” you may have exclaimed. “It’s Raylan! And Boyd! And snakes! And guns! And, wait a second, is that the hot bartender from last season?!”
It sure is, you perceptive little devil, you. Spoiler-ish stuff ahead.
Even though Winona has left Raylan behind, he seems to be doing all right for himself. You’ll see a lot more of bartender Lindsey, both behind the bar and between the sheets. But she’s hiding a secret that could rock Raylan’s world. Speaking of secrets, Boyd seems to be even less trusting of his partners than usual this season. That may have something to do with the secret stash of cash he’s keeping from everyone — including Ava! [TV Guide]
And in an interview today, showrunner Graham Yost revealed the following:
We’re doing a couple different things this season. One is that we open with a flashback to what happened 30 years ago, loosely based on something that did happen around that time, called The Bluegrass Conspiracy. What we decided to do this season was have more of a mystery and, in a sense, a big fugitive pursuit. They don’t know who he is, so there’s that mystery to solve, and then it’ll go on from there.
And this, which is kind of a bummer, I guess:
I don’t think we get to see [Dewey Crowe] this season. Wynn Duffy (Jere Burns) is still around, he plays a big part this season. But if we’re lucky enough to see this through to its natural end — we’re looking at six seasons — Dewey will play a part. There are opportunities, because Arlo’s in prison this year, that we could have seen Dewey, but it’s like, we don’t want to just see Dewey, we want to have an episode about Dewey. And similarly with Dickie Bennett (Jeremy Davies), who is probably not going to appear this year.
So, to recap, here are some things we know about the upcoming season of Justified:
- Raylan is banging the hot bartender, and she has some sort of devious secret.
- Boyd appears to be hiding money and preaching and/or arguing with snake handlers.
- There will be mysterious fugitives and I don’t even know what that means but I love it.
- The big bad for this season is going to be a group of “hill people” who have been described as “a dangerous backwoods group of ruffians who aren’t all there.”
- Wynn Duffy is back, which means lots of witty repartee between him and Raylan. Always a highlight.
- Patton Oswalt will appear as Constable Bob, “a local constable who went to high school with Raylan and has been hired by the lawman to watch Arlo’s house,” who tells a single high school football story over and over like Al Bundy.
- Jeremy Davies cut his own hair like a lunatic again to prepare for a season that he’s not even in, which is kind of awesome.
- We will be recapping the show again this year, and we’ve got a bunch of fancy new badges that you can earn for participating in our discussions.
- All of this begins happening on January 8 at 10PM, which by my calculations, is less than one week from today.
This will do just fine. Yes, yes it most certainly will.

Why are you telling me about this at a time of day when I can’t put my hand down my pants?
Team Ava or Team Bartender. Tough call for me. Ava does know how to handle a frying pan.
Team Bartender. And I dont even know what her spooky secret is. She could have originally been a man. That being said, Team Bartender.
Also, I guess Winona will be too busy trying to bang Kevin Bacon on FOX to be on Justified moving forward?
Can we set an over/under this season for things like Raylan’s kill count, Tim making quips, and the word hillbilly being used? God I can’t wait for the premiere
7. The answer is 7.
I was fast forwarding through a commercial break of the last episode of The League, and stopped to watch the Justified promos every time they popped up.
I just wish they were as good as the Star Wars take off they used last year

Jesus DG. As if I wasn’t already excited enough, your giddiness has increased my anticipation. I sincerely hope you will be doing the recaps (assuming there are any).

My favorite part about the return of Justified is my wife not giving me crap about drinking bourbon on a Tuesday.
Every time Raylan shoots someone, he should look strait into the camera and whisper “Justified”.
Fun, Less Bad Ass Fact: I often do this when doing stupid things (flipping tables, chairs, doing stupid dances) while drunk. God, I’m an asshole
I’m gonna be honest. I really didn’t want to know the bartender’s name. She was much better without it. That being said #teamlindsey
Ive already forgotten her name. Same way I forget Dawsons on Apt 23.
No Dickie and No Dewey? —sucks
Heavily featured Wynn Duffy— awesome
The only thing I really hope doesn’t happen is Boyd becoming some sort of revival preacher or whatever the hell it looks like he’s doing in the promos. He already had his whole born-again phase, and it didn’t exactly work out for him. If he’s just doing it to scam people, on the other hand, I’m all for it
I am upset with no Dickie, I’m not gonna lie. However, if the lack of Dickie is made up for with an over abundance of Wynn Duffy, I think I’m good to go.
A note to the writers who I am sure read this blog. Wynn needs to be coupled with a fucking lunatic again this season. You cant deny us the one on one between a lunatic and an amazed Wynn Duffy.
Ways in which British TV is crap: If Justified is shown somewhere, it is pretty much impossible to find in the schedules.
An awesome friend lent me the first season on DVD last month. I then requested everything available on my Christmas list (I’m hard to shop for, OK?), and watched the entire second series in two days.
I plan to have acquired (I’m a January birthday) season three by the end of this month, and this will be followed by a long wait in the wilderness.
Dude, you need to get a job.
I hope Limehouse is in the new season.
I don’t understand how Kurt Sutter can stretch Sons Of Anarchy out for 7 seasons, when this show which is one of the least serialized dramas on cable, is only going to go 6. i feel like this thing could run 10 seasons no problem
That is outrageous that you would accuse me of watching ‘Law and Order’, Hallmark Christmas movies, football, and Justified promos–I didn’t watch any ‘Law and Order’ episodes at all.
BRING ON JUSTIFIED!!!1!!
I finally got to watch the first two seasons on blu-ray a few days ago, really enjoyed Raylan and Ava as a couple, was nice to see Joelle Carter smile (beautifully) as often as she did in the early days. Very much looking forward to season 4, rooting for Raylan and Lindsey. A whole season with neither Dewey nor Dickie is a rough deal, but I guess it makes sense since they’re both locked up. Plenty of Wynn will probably make up for it, though. And ideally Tim and Rachel will have more to do in S4 than in S3. More Limehouse would be cool too.
Can’t wait danger. See you soon
We weren’t even sure dickee survived
I have only watched one Justified, but read the book Raylan by Elmore Leonard and liked it so much, than my sister said, ” she had watched a show based on the character in the book.” It took me awhile to find Justified, and saw it was coming back in January. Waiting for January 8th!
Justified is worth paying for cable.
