In January alone, TV will have lost, to cancellation or we’ve-been-on-for-7-seasons, three of its most powerful and talented minds in Tina Fey, Dana Fox, and Nahnatchka Khan. This is a bummer for two reasons, 1) 30 Rock, Ben and Kate, and Don’t Trust are excellent, and 2) the trio listed above are all female, and despite infuriating troll arguments to the contrary, there aren’t enough women TV writers. Jezebel’s Laura Beck wrote an article about this yesterday entitled “The Sh*t My Dad Says Guy Gets Another Sitcom, But Where Are All the Women Writers?” which made some very good points, but, on top of the misplaced targeting of Justin Halpern, a producer for Cougar Town – a show led by two strong women with multiple female writers — also explained the issue, but offered few solutions.
I don’t doubt that Halpern might be a swell guy, but his shows are indicative of the type of ideas that are often given initial opportunities (and second chances) in the TV industry. A white guy telling his story is agonizingly familiar territory, and yet it’s awarded a rich pilot production commitment from a major studio. When I hear news like this, I can’t help but think about all the challenging, unique, and better ideas that are passed over for the same old shit — and I bet a lot of them come from women.
Yes, there are exceptions, not every show on TV is about a white dude, or run by a white dude, but there aren’t nearly as many women writing shows as there are men. A 2012 Center for Study of Women in TV and Film study found that 68% of all TV shows don’t even have one female writer on staff. (Via)
But enough about what us dumb bloggers think about the issue — let’s hear from The Shield and Terriers creator Shawn Ryan, who shared his thoughts on the article. Start reading from the bottom because I’m lazy.

Here’s what Chitra Elizabeth Sampath, a writer for Southland, had to say about the study:

So what did we learn? Well: there should be more females writing for TV shows, but it’s slowly getting better. There are women on the writing staffs for Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Mad Men, Community, Happy Endings, The League, Parks and Recreation, New Girl, Bob’s Burgers, Archer, and a bunch of our other favorites series — hell, even Louie, which I’d argue is TV’s most “male” show. Also, don’t quite bunk studies.
My solution to the issue: give me a show, some network, and I’ll hire ONLY female writers. Deal, AMC?

Am I hopelessly outdated if I say who cares where all the women writers are? I’m not saying I don’t want women writers, I’m saying that as long as the quality is good, I don’t care who is writing it.
Yes.
You’re not outdated, but if you think there’s a pure meritocracy at work you’re delusional.
So if we accept Shawn Ryan’s assertion that women dominate network executive positions over men by 2:1, then why are men dominating writer/director credits on TV shows? If the Jezebel writer is pissed off at bad TV shows, is the female network executive at least partly to blame? Is the female network executive responsible for the lack of female writers and directors?
I do not know if any of the above questions are fair, but I do know that Jezebel’s shitty analysis is shitty. It kind of pisses me off that the Jezebel writer’s article basically relied on a very technically unsound study, and that she did not bother to take a closer look. The entire article reeked of confirmation bias, and a general lack of analytical rigor. I have nothing against female writers, and everything she might think about the male dominated entertainment industry might be true, but before she publishing that garbage article, she should have done her homework, and got her shit together.
Jezebel is one of the most annoying and hacky blogs around.
Where are all the white guys in the NBA?
Unless black basketball players have a role creating popular culture in their image at the expense of other perspectives, this comparison ain’t work.
Europe.
Playing for Minnesota.
Larry Bird isn’t a GM anymore
When did female become a noun?
Early 14th century, when it was imported into English from Old French “femelle”.
It seems like just yesterday.
see i ask this question all the time. the shows we love, i assume they have to have a few female writers on staff, i cant believe its all male dominated.
but the shows we love always, and i mean always have one ridiculously dumb ass female that is the worst character ever and just fucks the show up most times. and i wonder how can a female writer not speak up about the constant idiot woman in each show.
walking dead-laurie
24- kim bauer
breaking bad- skyler
boardwalk empire- margaret
game of thrones- cat stark
homeland- the wife season 1, the daughter season 2
sons of anarchy- jemma
and shit i’m watching rescue me right now s6, fuckin janet gavin smfh she is the absolute worst.
so i guess its men writers doing all this cuz i cant believe a woman would have a hand in creating these idiot characters.
So there are no idiot men characters in these shows. There are no idiot women in real life? Some of those you mentioned are not idiotic in totality, and be some some of their actions annoy you personally they reflect badly on women in general?
Look at most sitcoms and see who has their shit together more, the mom or the dad.
On the plus side, apparently women had nothing to do with the writing of Nash Bridges, so they can be proud of that.
“A white guy telling his story… not every show on TV is about a white dude, or run by a white dude, but there aren’t nearly as many women writing shows as there are men”
Well I can address part of this. It seems like I see these casual, negative references to white men more and more these days (and before anyone freaks out, no it’s not at all comparable to the racism minority groups deal with [though racism is present everywhere as well]).
From census.gov regarding the US population: “White persons, percent, 2011 (a) 78.1%
Black persons, percent, 2011 (a) 13.1%”
This is why there is so much focus on white people in the media, it’s the main target demo. So before you cry about the lack of black people on “Girls” next time, consider the population percentages.
This isn’t racism, it’s about getting people to watch your shows. There’s a reason ESPN doesn’t cover much cricket and it doesn’t have anything to do with latent anti-angloistic sentiments left over from the War of 1812.
The emphasis on the above story was on the ‘guy’ part, not the ‘white’ part. Man vs women population is more toward 50:50.
If you read between the lines a little bit, and she’s not unsubtle about this, she’s saying that a lot of garbage gets put on TV, garbage that any idiot could tell you will never work and will be instantly cancelled. You have one hit show and you can basically put any garbage on TV you want, while new, innovative talent (that happens to not be white guys) get short shrift.
The main thing I learned from this post is that Shawn Ryan should get a fucking blog or something. Maybe a Facebook page.
[insert sandwich joke here]
Even when Jezebel’s right about something, they’re annoying.
