After an outstanding first half of season three, there were way too many people dismissing the mid-season premiere. Yes, there were some leaps of logic, and it wasn’t as fast-moving as the previos half of the season, but Glen Mazarra needed to take a break and set up the chess pieces again. In the last few minutes of last night’s “Home,” it all came together in a beautiful, bloody fashion, reuniting the prison gang, establishing the Governor’s level of crazy, and setting us up for what should be a series of exciting upcoming episodes centered on zombie-guerrilla warfare between the prison and Woodbury.
Let’s get right to the recap:
1. The Scene at the Prison — Over in at the prison, the gang — minus Rick — is planning for an attack by The Governor, but Glenn thinks they should go on the offense. Hershel takes the lead, and discourages Glenn. “We can’t stay here,” Hershel says. “We can’t run,” Glenn counters. They ultimately agree to make a stand. Later on, however, Hershel has to play Gipper. “This rage is going to get you killed.” Dumbass Glenn goes to Woodbury anyway, because HE’S A MAN, and HE HAS PRIDE, and DON’T MESS WITH MY LADY.

2. The Scene at Woodbury — “These people need you. We need you,” The Governor tells Andrea, angling to elevate her to the new leader. But something is up. Things continue to be frosty and awkward between Andrea and Winky. The Governor claims there won’t be any retaliation against the prison gang. It’s clearly a ploy. The Governor makes it clear that it’s a ploy by elevating Milton to his new right hand man and charging him with keeping an eye on Andrea. If that’s not clue enough, Milton and the security staff give Andrea the cold shoulder.

3. Tyrese Watch Week 1 — Where’d Tyrese and his crew get off to? Surely, we haven’t seen the last of them. I mean, why would they go to the trouble of introducing each of Tyrese’s gang, by name, TWICE, if we’re not going to see them again?

4. Glenn continues to be pissy. Maggie continues not to like the pissy Glenn. — Maggie is having some serious issues with Glenn, though I don’t really understand why, exactly. Is she pissed because Glenn is upset that she might have been raped? Is she pissed that it’s all Glenn cares about? Is she pissed that he’s letting his pride cloud his judgement, or is she a little bit pissed that Glenn didn’t find a way to kill The Governor already? I hope Glenn never delivered pizzas in this state of mind.

i would have to say im disappointed on how this show has been turning out and im rooting for the zombies.
the firefight was bull sh*t. the entire cast has never missed hitting a zombie with a damn headshot every time they fire a single bullet, no matter if they’re standing, sitting, running, or laying on the ground, no matter how far away they are, and no matter what time of day. Yet with semi automatic weapons with scopes, they can’t hit actual people, who are standing still during the middle of the day.
Not only that, they allowed a single shooter in the tower to pin down separate groups of shooters Glenn & Carol and Maggie. Instead of Glenn or Maggie using suppressing fire to keep his head down, they simply took turns wildly shooting in his direction. WTF?
Governor wasting precious ammo by spraying it into the air. Governor standing and smirking while bullets fly past him miraculously missing him. Martinez using advanced stand in same place and kinda duck a little bit techniques to evade bullets. Why.
And the absence of Tyreese was a bit disappointing. Cutty needs screen time.
Crazy Rick needs to get it together
I once had my head smashed in a car trunk like that. ONCE.
Loved this weeks show, lots of action, character development and growth including..
- Rick going even further off the deep end and recognizing that he is, but still goes
- Maggie and Glen further separating after their dramatic ordeal in Woodbury, only to be brought back a little at the end by the attack
- Glenn stepping up even though he and everyone else knows, its out of his league
- Carol and Axel getting close, only to see Axel get clipped
- Herchel realizing they need Rick back asap
- Andrea finally starting to come to her senses, if it smells like shit, its probably shit
- Governor completely off his rocker, firing random bullets in the air after telling people to conserve them in previous episodes
Zombies getting decimated left in right by guns, knives, poles, katana’s and Subaru’s..
Stop hating and start enjoying…haters.
the unintentional funny part about ricks nutzo BS is how he’s rational enough to snap out of it when the bullets are flying.. makes a lot of sense if you get really high. To be fair even that’s not true. I was really high and still made little sense.
so you realized the governor was a bit off because of the shooting of the bullets? the heads in fish tanks didn’t do it for ya?
true but at least he had his crazy controlled(ish)…and with his daughter zombie in the picture and the experiments he had something to live for, now on the other hand he could careless if he dies, much less any of the “nobodies” in Woodbury.. Can’t wait to see how things next week play out
Finally someone who can leave a positive comment about the episode without bitching about it.
Fucking fuck this show’s character development! Crazy Rick is forced and poorly executed. The Glenn and Maggie tension is completely fucking bonkers. Michonne has killed countless walkers in the defense of the prison gang yet still no one trusts her. Andrea is a stoopid bitch. For a show with such awesome potential, it’s getting irritating to me that there are so many obvious flaws with its development creatively.
And for fucks sake, I want Robert Kirkman to answer some serious questions about the show without going all ‘*wink-wink *faggot grin *eat a sandwich *we’ll have to wait and see bullshit.’ It’s like a group of high-school students are producing this show.
Thank You.
/slow clap
I thought this was just some generic rant, but when you dropped”*Faggot grin”, shit got real. You are a voice, and you need to be heard.
*spelling stupid : s-t-o-o-p-i-d, is the only way i get down now, thanks.
Not sure if it was just me, but I was hoping that Rick got killed in this episode. His craziness has made him amazingly stupid. Your Wife is dead, deal with it, you should be concerned with your two kids, not going off into the woods and leaving the group in disarray. Also damn, the gov is deadly accurate with that Steyr AUG
Maybe his struggles with PTSD should result in him killing himself like all the cool army guys are doing these days. You know, to make it more realistic.
These writers are really struggling with characters who aren’t white men. If a charter isn’t white or a man you can pretty much expect terrible decision making, forced conflict, undeveloped character, irrational behavior, or they just barely exist.
yeah good point rick is bastion of rational behavior. that’s a nice pc veiw of the show though.
At least Rick is an interesting, fully-realized character with clear motives–unlike Michonne, Lori, Andrea, Glenn, Maggie, or T-Dogg.
Maggie is upset that Glen assumed something happened to her that didn’t without talking to her or asking her. Maggie is also upset because she assumes that all Glen cares about is the possibility that she was raped, thereby diminishing what they actually went through as if it wasn’t traumatic enough.
I gotta say, I dig comic Michonne a whole lot more than television Michonne. She was a little badass at the end of this weeks episode, but generally she’s been more Emo-Samurai Super Sleuth than bad-ass zombie slicer. Think about it, she spent most of the first half of the season walking around looking sad and conducting crappy investigations; I really hope that now that she’s on Team Grimes, she steps up, but I think they’re giving most of the secondary hero gigs to Daryl (who I actually like better than almost anyone in the comic). Anddddd end rant.
The comic right now is pretty devoid of any truly likable characters, but I agree that Michonne is awful on the show and that Daryl basically has filled her roll as badass sidekick.
horrible actress but thankfully they had a lot less of her this past week.
I learned that characters on TWD can dodge bullets baby. This show is circling the toilet bowl and just about the be flushed.
to be flushed.
Yeah, bullet dodging in a show about zombies is strictly forbidden. Let’s try to keep that hyper-realism the show is known for.
ugh not even in same zip code, bud (judd nelson voice) but thanks for trying.
The tension between Maggie and Glen feels so forced and unrealistic that it boarders on retarded. Does this tension exist in the graphic novel and if so is it fleshed out better?
If i remember correctly, Maggie never sets foot in woodbury, it’s michione that gets assaulted. They get along really well in the comic, the only tension being over Maggie wanting the two of them to seperate from the group.
agreed !
It’s been awhile since I didn’t want an episode of Walking Dead to end, I didn’t want Sunday’s episode to end
This is my 37th comment on this entry and still no badge? Shared it on Twitter to no avail. What gives?
One comment, one badge for me. Although it was the Lori badge. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.
I seem to have lost my avatar though.
Just got another badge though.
You shouldn’t do these things for digital badges. Your motivation is weak.
A watched pot never boils.
But I’m determined to get to Michonne. Maybe I should start lopping off heads?
And…40. Can I get a fucking badge already?
Slightly extended scenes from the promo are up now: [youtu.be] and [youtu.be].
I think Maggie is just upset about what she went through and taking it out on Glenn.
Women! Amirite?
this show is becoming unbearable, hopefully there is some of that maiming going on or I’ll be dropping it like a sack of potatos!
“The least they could do is give us an enchilada or somethin’. “
I’d be a lot more jazzed for the show being back if they weren’t doing the “Crazy Rick” dance again.
I forgot the moves to that. Is it one-two cha cha cha or fast-slow fast-slow quick quick?
It’s crazy-stare crazy-stare point the gun.
Andrea continues to be the worst…. Andrea>Lori… also, how the fucksticks did that woodbury guy get in the tower? anyone?
At first I thought the family with the baby on the bridge was going to be Tyresse’s crew with a couple of new members. Oh well.
more darryl and merle adventures and i’ll be a happy girl!
Well, there’s the upcoming video game…
the whole glenn maggie drama is real simple to me.
the gov cleverly mind fucked glenn earlier in the season by having her take her shirt off, and then kissing her on the head after he shoved maggie back into glenn’s arms. he got so deep inside glenn’s head. maggie is ok, she wasnt harmed she just has to watch glenn slowly crumble which will hurt her.
the gov planned this so long ago and it worked to perfection. when people talk about how crazy the gov is, he still isnt as crazy as rick is. and he seems to be making better long term plans of attack then rick is also. the glenn maggie plan, he probably already has an andrea plan. what is rick’s plan? that being said i cant wait to see the prison gang rise to the occasion
Still no badge after posting to fb and commenting 4x. Wtf
I’ve been having that trouble too. Oddly, I got an SNL badge yesterday for leaving the tab open for a couple of hours because I got distracted and walked away for a couple of hours. Go figure?
Welllll…after commenting about 20 times still nothing for me either. I’m going to be stuck on Hershel forever.
“I ain’t wasting my employs on a couple of strangers who ain’t never cooked me a meal, or fellaciated my piece. That’s my policy.”
Fellaciated my piece. Yeah, that’s added to the rolodex.
Yip.
Merle had a few last night, though it was his full body movement when he was suggesting that beavers or whatever it was were “making love” that made me wretch.
Tyrese is gonna step in as temp leader til Rick comes back from Oz.
Good idea. Now if only they can find Tyrese…
I loved how Glenn up to this point has been a gopher and then got the brakes beat off him by Merle but he somehow thinks he’s leader material.
@Vince, yeah when Glen said that I thought that I’d like to that org chart.
The Governor is absolutely amazing! You can tell he got a huge erection by shooting of that gun. Also Andrea is still the worst…and Lori is also the worst, she almost got Rick killed. I think they blew it by not explaining that Tyrese and the others left the prison. If the Exec-Producer has to explain it during the after show, you missed an opportunity.
I still can’t help but feel like his accent reminds me of Liam Neeson’s American accent. In fact, every time he talks offscreen, I’m thinking, “Oh shit! Michonne gonna be sorry she killed his daughter!”
Well in the comics, The Governor really gives it to Michonne in some depraved ways…maybe we are still going to see that.
^ I think that got switched to Maggie and “cleaned up” for television. Just like how Lori doesn’t crush Judith to death, and Carol doesn’t propose a threesome with Rick and Lori.
Much better than the mid-season premiere.
It does bug me, however, that the show only humanizes a character right before they off said character. Unless the character is in the main cast (Rick, Glenn, Maggie, Daryl, Hershel, Carl, Michonne, Andrea, Carol, Beth) it seems that as soon as we learn anything new about a character, something that grounds them or fleshes them out a little more, they get killed. I wish the producers would buck this trend.
Do you know why Shane, Lori, and Dale’s deaths were shocking (at least to those that haven’t read the comic and already knew they weren’t long for this world)? It is because we actually learned more about them throughout multiple episodes rather than just a single episode.
T-Dog is the exception that proved the rule. We knew nothing about him because he never had lines and a second black male was introduced, which in this show’s world means he had to go (a-la Oscar once Tyreese showed up). Michonne will escape this because she plays a huge part in the comics, the show just isn’t utilizing her correctly yet. Plus she has a katana.
I thought that too. It’s not just the black guys who have to watch it. Apparently there can be no living prisoners left either.
Though, what’s curious to me is that McBride, who plays Carol, is still not listed as a regular cast member in the credits. Yet, Rooker, who’s been back all of five minutes as Merle, is in the opening credits. I’m not trying to say that Carol has a bullseye on her back, but what the hell? Sarah Wayne Callies is still listed in the opening credits, but I guess technically she’s still around.
Flora, how people are listed on the credits is spelled out in your contract. Rooker’s got a little more juice, and if I remembetr correctly McBride was doing makeup for the show and was a last minute add to the cast.
I have no idea where you heard that. Frank Darabont (‘memba him?) likes working with actors he’s worked with before. She previously worked on The Mist, a [somewhatshittyfilm] that Darabont directed a few years ago.
Q: You had a small but poignant part on The Mist. Were you surprised that Frank Darabont remembered you when it came time to do this?
A: I never saw The Walking Dead coming. I’d been working as a casting director. (I was acting full time, always living in Atlanta, and just decided ten, eleven years ago that I wanted to try something different.) I took just a couple of parts, The Mist being one of them, because it was Frank. When I wrapped, he thanked me and I thanked him and that was it. Cut to three years later, I’m standing in the casting office and I get a phone call from my agent saying, “Frank Darabont is shooting The Walking Dead in Atlanta and has a part for you if you want it.” I was like, “What? Where did that come from?” He is the man of great surprises in my life.
Mrs. Scorpio said she thought Ghost Lori looked sexy. I don’t know what to do with this information, thought I’d leave it here.
Are you looking for advice…? If you want a threesome, go to Vegas, get a nice room (don’t be a cheap bastard), get some E, drive out to one of those legal brothels in the country, and tell your wife it’s her birthday present. I saw it go down like this once on a documentary about brothels in Nevada, so that probably happens all the time. The only hitch will be showing up with a shear white not-quite-wedding dress for the prostitute to wear. That might cost extra.
She looked clean.
I had to rewind the DVR three times to watch what we all knew would earn Zombie Kill of the Week status.
I’m glad we only had one episode with everybody going their separate ways. That shit would have grown old fast.
You’re probably referring to the Subaru, but I’m thinking the first few whacks of Michonne on the run really deserved the honor, if it weren’t for the fact we’ve seen her do it before…but it was the moment she did it in that matters!
Also, it was ridiculous that, when shooting zombies, everyone is accurate, but when shooting live people, the aiming goes away. But hey, I’ve learned not to expect realism with this show.
Zombies don’t shoot back. It’s probably considerably harder to aim and take a shot when someone has you pinned down with surprise on their side.
Bugs the hell out of me that they waste so much ammo going full auto and still can’t hit the broad side of a barn.
I’m used to that, but the unit discipline when Carl and the gang started taking fire made me say WTF. Their response was pretty cool and coordinated. I get that they can handle themselves clearing houses/prisons of zombies (lots of practice over the winter) but I’m guessing they didn’t get into a lot of firefights. Although I bet Glen played a lot of Call of Duty.
Agreed, overall it was a good episode.
When is Tyreese going to come back and SPLIT WIGS, because that’s what he does?
Subaru kill. Best product placement ever.
Gets 30 MPG and slices the tops of zombies’ heads off easily!
I was really hoping for Tyreese to come back and join the group.
I’m betting it will happen eventually.
Yeah, Maggie and Glenn’s thing is. Little annoying.
I keep thinking about the “everyone is infected” thing. The people of Woodbury can’t know this because Andrea was already gone before Rick told everyone.
Don’t they know from the really old guy dying from prostate (?) cancer and Andrea and Milton keeping watch to see if he remembers anything once he turns?
That’s true. Never thought of that.
That would only be Andrea and Milton though. Aside from them and the Governor everyone else is probably in the dark.
Andrea didn’t know until the governor told her and Michonne. When they first meet him, he shoots the guy who was killed in the helicopter crash in the head. Andrea gets all freaked out and asks why he did it and he tells her everyone’s infected. It wouldn’t be too hard to figure out if you’d seen people die of causes other than bites, and it’s safe to assume the governor had.
^ Exactly. Short attention span? That episode wasn’t THAT long ago. Granted, a lot of shiznit has gone down since the opening of the season in October.
Somehow, I just earned the Michonne badge, even though I never got the Governor badge.
*shakes fist*
“UPROXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!”
Yeah, apparently, that happens to everyone.
I’m in the same boat.
Whereas I’m commenting on every thread and getting no game at all. Anyone want to give me the Michonne badge, please? It’s not as though I’m not working for it.
it sucks waiting to see episodes with the wife.
I’d watch it then pretend I didn’t know what was going on watching it again haha.
glad its not just me
Is it just me, or is Lori way more attractive when she doesn’t talk?
She looks better as a ghost/hallucination.
She’s way more attractive when she’s not either A) skeletally thin or B) heavily pregnant. Neither of those are good looks.
The not talking to Rick helps, though.
Being dead and not talking does dramatically cut down on the number of “WHERE’S CARL???!?!??!?!?” moments, which were Lori’s worst.
Uh, I’m pretty sure Glenn drove around to the other side of the prison to check on the downed fences, not all the way to Woodbury. How would he have showed up when he heard the gunshots if he was all the way at Woodbury?
You are correct, sir.
Yeah if he went all the way to Woodbury we would’ve have seen him again until the next episode (with Dre and Snoop presumably)
And he would’ve passed the Gov’s convoy I think
Also explains the stuff in the truck under the tarp- fence fixin’ materials.
I don’t think that Martinez guy is invulnerable, I just think the writers have him slated to be killed by Merle. On top of that, Merle will probably call him a beaner right before he does it.
I had a similar thought when he was shooting up Rick and was nowhere near being in danger, which is equal parts annoying that they save these villains to be killed in the final episode of the season, and also satisfying when they’re finally put down. The soldiers in season 4 of LOST come to mind.
So how many of the Governor’s men were killed? Like 2? The Tower guy (who got by everyone on guard duty) and the guy that was standing near the Governor?
I want stealth vehicles like they have. No one hears them coming or pulling up.
I think Glenn notices that there’s no one on watch, right? After Rick leaves and starts his walk to crazy town and they’re having the discussion in the prison common area he makes a note of it, yes? Or was that the previous week’s episode? Or did I just imagine the whole thing?
Glenn did notice that, but there were plenty of people outside and yet nobody heard the car pull up.
A lot of people are wondering, so I’ll just make a new comment instead of replying to all of them. I’m seeing this as Maggie is pissed at Glenn because she wants to move past the Governor’s almost-rape, leave it behind her. But Glenn, in all his adorable anger, is keeping her from forgetting it. His warpath would only bring closure to himself, not to her. He’s objectified her, turned her from a person into a victim.
+1
I think Glenn is being so pissy about it because he’s supposed to be the man, yet Maggie is getting over their Woodbury ordeal way better and faster than he is. Bury your feelings, Glenn! It’s what us menfolk do!
I’ll buy that.
I think Maggie is just a bitch. This whole time Glenn was under the impression that she got raped and he’s been blaming himself for it, and she just kept letting him believe it. I’m not saying she didn’t go through something awful, but she shouldn’t have kept acting like she got raped when she didn’t. Then we she finally reveals the truth, shes super slow and dramatic about it, not to mention misleading. Glenn should be pissed.
Regardless of whether or not she was actually raped (she was still pretty well violated), it’s not Glenn’s decision on how it should be handled. This was her crisis. Her body that was violated. Glenn reacting the way he is though takes that away from her, because he’s acting as though her body is his. Bear with me here. He has a right to be mad about it, but he must respect her decision with how to deal with it. If he constantly runs around screaming, “DO YOU KNOW WHAT HE DID TO HER!” How does that help her decision to deal with her crisis by moving past it?
^ Very well said. Maggie is dealing with this in her own way but Glenn doesn’t know what to do with the emotions it’s brought up in him. His issues.
Anyone else notice in the “next time” segment that the wrong eye is fucked up on the governor? His right eye is missing (which makes the fact that his right-handed shooting is super accurate completely ridiculous), but in the previews there’s a shot with his left eye missing.
Also, out of all the things he could’ve done, unleashing a truck of zombies isn’t the smartest. The prison was already infested with walkers when the group arrived (which the governor knew). What’s bringing more of them in there going to do? You know what would’ve been super effective? Even more people with guns to surround the place.
He’s looking at himself in the mirror… Context clues are easy to use.
I think the zombie truck was just for showing them he’s nuts and he wanted the group to waste some bullets.
Hey, my mother’s right-handed but shootswith her left eye. It’s unlikely, but possible.
I kind of assumed that, having released the walkers, his crew would stand back and pick the prison crew off while they were fighting the undead. But instead they just drove off.
But did she one day decide to start shooting like that? Or is that just how she does it? I’d have to rewatch the earlier episodes to know if he shoots like that or not, but I’m pretty sure he shot with his right eye.
I’m right handed and left eye dominant. About 10% of people (give or take) are like that.
you watch to hard son
If you read the comic and didn’t watch Talking Dead, or if you watched Talking Dead and didn’t read the comic, the actor who played Axel (Lew Temple) mentioned that he was originally hired to play Thomas Richards. I wish they would have had a real Axel and kept the Richards plotline…I wonder if that was something Mazzara took out.
Before Axel’s demise this was rattling around in the back of my head. I figured they were just going to merge Axel and Richards, haha guess I’m the idiot.
I know that the showrunners and writers can’t follow the source material exactly, but some of the plot points they’ve sacrificed are ultimately hurting the show.
I think there’s two reasons they didn’t put Thomas Richards in the show. 1 The Richards thing is like the Michonne and The Gov. thing from the comics, it might be “too much” for TV. 2 There is also less people compared to the comics in the prison so I think going with a Thomas Richards story wouldn’t work as well.
I think you noticed that Robert Kirkman got a little pissed at Lew Temple for even mentioning that stuff like using fake names or even Thomas Richards.
i don’t care what anyone says, but michonne is awesome. facial expressions, killing prowess, and instinct…she kicks ass.
She may kick ass, but she’s still poorly written.
I like that she doesn’t talk much. It seems like everyone else speaks without thinking. She is always very calculated with what she says.
I think it makes her more badass. Also, by not being such a social chatterbox, it allows her to lurk around and observe things that other characters wouldn’t be witness to, like Rick wandering out to dead Lori and leaving the gates open, or being out in the fields near Rick when the Governor tried to rain holy zombie hell on the prison.
‘Facial expression’ you mean? All she does is scowl.
So.. that was Andrea with the mask on, right? The Governor clearly wasn’t expecting that trojan horse. At least that’s what I gathered from his reaction. Andrea assumed he was going to the prison, because OBVIOUSLY, so she made her way there on her own. Im sure she figures that the gang can handle a few walkers… its the ones who shoot back that you really need to worry about. She successfully drove the governor away from the scene, it seemed. She drives the van in, gets out, and we never see her again in the episode. She is at the prison right now, I think.
uh… no
That seems a little far fetched. Judging by Andrea’s actions this season, this amount of planning/scheming seems above her IQ.
interesting theory…could see it, but would def make andrea smarter than everyone things.
@Dub_C I am on this Andrea as driver page too and agree with your reasoning
Except she shoots at Michonne and runs out the front gate towards the guv, not towards the prison with her friends. Plus, the governor was firing randomly in a pretty blatant attempt to draw more walkers before the truck arrived. No, I think it’s safe to assume Andrea’s still just dumb
It’s still a really stupid plan. The jail no longer has any protection which means that Andrea potentially just made her “friends” homeless. That’s a pretty shitty plan for trying to make people stop fighting. I know you guys hate Andrea, but, jesus christ. She can’t be that stupid, can she?
No way. He doesn’t want her to see that side of him. She was looking for him at Woodbury
No, they left Andrea in Woodbury with “an eye on her”. Governor doesn’t trust her, remember? And like hell he’d tell her of his plan to go attack her friends.
