Pilot season is in full swing, and now that we know most of the pilots that have been picked up, casting has begun. Because of the nature of television these days, bigger stars are being attached to pilots, and many of them are from the movie world. Over the last few days, several big names have signed on to pilots, so let’s look at what we’ve got, so far. I’m sure that, after sifting through the casting news, many of you will be asking the same question I am: Where is Andrea Anders, and why hasn’t she been cast yet?

Girlfriend in a Coma — I wrote about this NBC comedy pilot a few weeks ago, and some folks thought it was a joke. It’s about a woman who has been in a coma for 17 years and wakes up to discover that she has a daughter from a pregnancy of which she was unaware. It’s based on a Douglas Coupland novel (I THOUGHT so). I’ve read the Coupland novel, and if it hews closely, that means that the show will probably focus on the girlfriend after she wakes from a coma, and also flashback to the intervening years while her boyfriend — well, the guy who she lost her virginity to at a teenage party — is raising the child. ANYWAY, Christina Ricci has been cast as the girlfriend.

Bloodline — Our boy Jonathan Banks, who plays Mike Ehrmentraut on Breaking Bad — is making the same mistake that Giancarlo Esposito did by making a drama for NBC. In the comic-book stylized thriller, Banks will play “the villainous Leo Killpriest, the patriarch of an ancient line of killers, brigands and mercenaries who’s worried that the last remaining members of his scattered family will be wiped off the face of the earth.” I like that he’s getting more work, but I wish he’d stick with cable. He was also wasted in the weekend’s big comedy hit at the box office, Identity Thief.

Mom — Single-moms are the hip new thing this pilot season (see also), and Nate Corddry has signed on as the male lead in this Chuck Lorre sitcom, which will star Anna Faris as a single and newly sober mom who moves in with her mother, played by Allison Janney. Great cast, but DAMN: Why’s it gotta be Chuck Lorre, and why’s it gotta be on CBS?

… a group of gay friends living in San Francisco and dealing with the “modern gay experience.”
Damn, this is the perfect show for a Lena Dunham type.
I literally read it as Girls for gays.
The G Word?
So I guess betting money is that show will be more along the lines of Entourage and Girls-like HBO comedies as opposed to Veep and Eastbound and Down-like HBO comedies.
Entourage was an intentional comedy? huh, I never new that, brilliant next level shit if that was the case.
Also, this will certainly be less gay than entourage.
I hesitate to use the term “comedy” for the former group of shows, but I wouldn’t classify them as dramas.
When Last Resort was canceled I made the comment that Andre Braugher should be on a tv show at all times. Glad the right people were paying attention.
This should seriously be a constitutional amendment.
Can’t jonathan banks just keep his schedule open for a recurring role on Parks and Rec? pleeeease?
Andre Braugher: Now playing every cop comedy stereotypical serious chief
Anna Farris, still the queen of picking projects that she’s way too good for.
Love Andre Braugher but I wouldnt be opposed to that show failing for two reasons:
1) A stereotypical serious chief in a comedy role is a waste of his talent
2) Every great hero needs that villain that is equal to his abilities. In this case Raylan Givens is that hero and from a pure wishful thinking standpoint I want Andre Braugher to be that villain on Justified. (unrelated: also more Carla Gugino on Justified please)
NBC is so so terrible.
NBC is basically the same as playing for the Miami Marlins – sign, get PAYD, stay for 5 months, then go to a better place.
I have a pitch for a TV show and I only need one gif to do it.
+1
WOW. I just finished BB (have been in on Parks & Rec from the beginning) and you just buhh-lew my mind. This show would just… I dunno. Need to get some air to contemplate.
Didn’t Girlfriend in a Coma have a subplot about the filming of The X-Files? Because that’d be fascinating – if impossible – to tie-in.
It’s been forever since I read it but I think so. I also recall imminent armageddon being a plot point too.
The book? How so?
I read the name Leo Killpriest, and immediately fell into an uncontrollable fit of laughter. Now I’ll have to watch this show. From start to finish.
I first saw Kretschmann in a movie based on Enki Bilal comics. He spends the whole movie lugging around a metal foot and raping a blue haired chick. It’s a weird one.
I can not wait to not watch Mom. Fuck Chuck Lorre in the butthole.
Girlfriend in a Coma immediately fails if they don’t license the song.
Man, I love Josh Holloway. Enough to watch a CBS procedural? We’ll see. But I don’t understand why he hasn’t gotten more high-profile work since Lost. He’s a very good actor, and he seems pretty charming from what little I’ve seen of him in interviews. And of course he’s gorgeous. Anyway, I’m interested in the cop show, and intrigued by Girlfriend In A Coma. And I guess I’ll wait and see on the Jonathan Banks one.
Also: there’s a lot of Jonathans up in here!
josh holloway has a shitload of charisma I hope his show is awesome or at least a moderate success he needs to be a bigger star
I love Cristina Ricci, I was a fan of pan am, it was a bit silly sometimes but I just really liked those girls, and like everyone else has said, girlfriend in a coma needs to have the Smiths song otherwise why even call it that?
