After shooting to first place in the 18-49 demo in the fall on the success of Revolution, Sunday Night Football and The Voice, NBC has completely frittered away their season in the last six weeks. Earlier this week, I wrote about how NBC’s boneheaded moves has doomed their 2012-2013 season (and I even forgot to mention their deplorable scheduling of Grimm), but if NBC hopes to turn it around, Hannibal may be their best shot. The thriller, based on the Thomas Harris characters, stars Hugh Dancy as Special Agent Will Graham, but more importantly, Mads Mikkelsen, as Dr. Hannibal Lecter.
There’s definitely some promise, but I can’t help but think of The Firm, NBC’s ill-fated attempt to adapt John Grisham’s novel into a television series starring Josh Lucas. It may be that NBC is simply snake bit: It can’t even launch decent shows like Prime Suspect and Awake in the Thursday night 10:00 slot. Facing ratings beast Elementary on CBS and soaring Scandal on ABC, I’m not confident that Hannibal can gain a foothold. The trailer doesn’t offer a ton of hope, either. In fact, the most promising thing about it is the caption at the end: “Viewer discretion is advised.”

Seconded
I’d watch any TV show with Mads Mikkelsen. That guy can bring it.
He’s awesome. Valhalla Rising FTW.
Agreed. He’s the only reason I’m even thinking of watching. I didn’t get interest until he showed up on screen and that’s either good or really really, God awful bad.
Mads Mikkelsen. The show may suck. He will not.
Strong possibility that Laurence Fishburne will be attending just to collect his paycheck.
Agreed on both. Fishburn sleepwalking through “21″ was kinda depressing.
Its sad that it took me a minute to remember that movie at all when its one that I saw twice on an airplane with 2 days and it should be seared into brain.
Seriously its not that he can’t put in a serviceable job even in movies with a crappy script. Friggin Event Horizon was schlock (pants shittingly scary schlock, but still). But at least he seemed to show up for that one and attempt something actor-y like.
But. Bryan Fuller.
NBC: The Hitler’s Wink of TV Networks
Yeah yeah yeah. It’s a Bryan Fuller show and Scully is in it. I’m gonna’ watch.
Wait…Scully is in this?!? My first love. The character I always played when my buddy and me weirdly acted out entire plotlines of The X-Files when we were kids (I’m a guy by the way)
Yeah we watching this. It may suck, but….Mads and Gillian Anderson, man. One Eye and Scully.
The serial killer is in Minnesota? He’d better watch out for Marge Gunderson, dontchaknow.
I have a mancrush on Mads Mikkelsen and I’m not ashamed to admit it.
I can’t see the trailer but, like seemingly everyone else here, I will give anything with Mads Mikkelsen in it a chance. No matter how bad the idea behind it.
The trailer doesn’t look too bad. And I’ll give any Bryan Fuller show a shot, so count me in.
this could be promising, if it was on HBO.
Yeah this looks like a show that should have gone the premium channel or even AMC/FX route. Though it may be possible those channels passed and NBC came swooping in for sloppy seconds.
What NBC should do is buck trends and actually make a TV-MA show that airs at 10. That would create buzz and if the show is any good, people would stick around after the initial curiosity of seeing a TV-MA show on a network.
The Networks can air the same kind of stuff as basic cable, they just choose not to and self-censor. NBC needs to do something different to shake things up. A TV-MA drama good be a wise step in the right direction.
Yeah, not a good trailer, but I too enjoy Mads Mikkelsen. Will give it a looksee.
Scott Thompson from The Kids in the Hall is in this, and he’s been saying he’s really proud of it and thinks it’s really good. I know a lot of actors say that, but this was on his own show, and it sounded genuine. I’ll give it a shot.
/Pictures Scott Thompson in a serious role
/Pictures a Buddy Cole monologue
/Head asplodes
So even though this show has the following: 1) Mads Mikkelsen, 2) Bryan Fuller as it’s creator, 3) Gina Torres in a recurring role and 3) every geek’s first real life red-headed love, it still only looks mediocre.
So we’re all in agreement then that if this fails the current NBC heads are the worse thing to ever happen to television, right?
$20 says Fishburne plays the same character from Predators.
Dude, what the hell was the point of that character? Like at all.
I’m disappointed, I thought Gillian Anderson would be playing the main character. I am considerably less interested now.
Waaaait a minute, ‘Elementary’ is a rating beast? Seriously? It’s quite possibly the WORST version of Sherlock Holmes stories that’s ever made it to screen.
