Yesterday’s Community was better in every respect than last week’s, with one exception. And sadly, that one exception is the only thing NBC cares about. No one watched the show last night. If, say, ABC had aired a dumb Da Vinci Code rip-off starring a guy who hadn’t been on TV in over a decade, it probably would have gotten higher ratings than Community, even if, for instance, it was also the lowest rated premiere in ABC history. (It did.)
In its second week of its fourth season and also head-to-head with American Idol on Fox, NBC’s Community (1.1/4) fell 42% from its season debut last week to hit a series low. (Via)
And you can’t even blame Valentine’s Day, either.

Well, at least people watched last week? Community screwed the pooch by not putting Annie in Jeff’s “ring girl” costume. Though even that would get trounced by #nickiminajhair, probably, because America is dumb, definitely.

To be fair the season premiere was a bloated mess that’d scare any non fan away.
I have to agree. While the Halloween episode was certainly better than the premiere, it was still a far cry from the Community in years 1-3.
Seriously, I straight up cringed at the scene where Annie gets scared by Pierce’s dad in the mirror and then turns to the camera and says “I hate reference humor”.
I wish they had just cancelled the show instead of bringing it back for this sub-par shortened Season 4.
Exactly. I’m not a huge fan of the show, but last week’s episode drove me away.
I turned it off right after “I hate reference humor.” I loved the show and gave it a chance but it is like eating the colorful cardboard box and pretending it is the cookies inside.
I don’t wanna say this is why we can’t have nice things, but it is. It really is.
It was Valentine’s Day.
Oops. Serves me right for reading half an article.
The new TNT Thursday. Cougartown/community
The difference here is that Cougartown is still really good.
Are you sure? I wike Cougar Town but really good might be an overstatement, though I am a week behind.
And then Happy Endings
The premiere was a terrible jumping off point for new viewers and a tad frustrating for older ones.
This is why one should have a strong-ass premiere, especially after a spell of hiatus!
Truth.
DAMMIT, AMERICA.
Do you not love shirtless Joel McHale? What is wrong with you?
I did the V-Day date thing. I solemnly swear to watch the DVR’ed episode three times without skipping the commercials, and personally call Nielsen to confirm this.
I’M SO SORRY, COMMUNITY, AND ALSO PATTY BOOTS. It won’t happen again.
shirtless Joel has a chance at bringing it back up next week (since ratings reflect the previous episode to a large extent)
I can’t imagine why people didn’t want to watch the Halloween episode on Valentine’s Day. It doesn’t matter anyway. Did anyone think the show would be around next year? As long as the rest of this season’s episodes are available.
yeah, good point. It felt like something that was just thrown at us with no thought of audience. So basically an NBC show.
I agree with this, one third of fans left when Harmon did, another is desperately hoping it continues forever, but the remaining bunch, myself included, didn’t even want them to force a 4th season – never mind a 5th
Cant say I’m surprised, if not a little crestfallen.
The bells toll for thee, Community.
I don’t think you understand that reference.
The terrorists have won.

Stupid outdated Nielsen ratings
Am I the only one who is OK with a show about community college not going beyond 4 years? I mean, look at The Office.
Yeah, I’d much rather shows go out on top before they get as stale as a 2 week old opened bag of Lays.
But honestly, who goes to community college for 4 years? I mean they only give out two year associated degrees.
Maybe each season is a semester? I’d have to rewatch it though…
they address that toward the end of the last season when everyone is in therapy, Jeff insists Community colleges give out 3 and 4 year degrees.
According to Wikipedia, 14 states have allowed community colleges to give 4 year (bachelor’s) degrees.
I dislike how they are trying really hard to show us how the show can continue, and succeed, outside of the school (moving the Dean next to Jeff, having episodes like Pierce’s mansion and Spacetime convention etc)
Abed – “I remember when this show was about a Community college”
Do the Nielsen ratings take into account the time most people finish having sex on Valentine’s Day?
But they had hashtags on the show and everything. Weird twitter didn’t go nuts for those sick hashtags,
WHY ARE HASHTAGS HAPPENING AGAIN?
#sixseasonsandamovie #anniesmove #hetweetedit #crystalthemonkeybouncinginslowmotion

Maybe the casual viewer sees a Halloween episode and thinks its a rerun. This doesn’t bode well for the Thanksgiving and Christmas episodes.
Good point.
But 43% is hardly casual viewers for a cult show like Community
DVR watchers should help ratings.
That’s how I watched it.
My girl brought home SkyFall & a caramel apple. She also let me occupy her vagina for at least 4 minutes. What’s a man to do?
Huh, a Halloween themed episode didn’t work on Valentine’s day? Well, fuck me sideways.
I did my part!
Me too
y yo tambien….
Unless you live in a metered market or fill out a diary it made no difference.
of course I wrote about it in my diary, so we’re all good.
So DVR views don’t count then? Poppycock.
I just needs to stop. Being a fan of this show was like being in an abusive relationship.
I was disappointed by this news, and decided to pry into it a little bit. So, I went online, to see some off the grid habits of us internet folk when it comes to show watchin’. What I found was.. not good. I compared views of links provided by websites to uploaded streaming versions of Community, and its competitor The Big Bang Theory. My thought process was that this data would eliminate the Valentines Day live airing factor, as well as reflect an audience more suited to Community. Well, the Big Bang Theory kicked Community’s ass in online ratings as well. Something like 180000 views for BBT, and only 37000 for Community.
From a brief look, the same seems to be true for the Torrent world.
So what, we’re the assholes here?
But even idiots have access to the internet, I’m not surprised that BBT has larger numbers across the board, I’m sure it would be the case (even though dif days and everything) shows like HIMYM and 2.5Men also have large stream numbers which further goes to show that people watch bad tv no matter what the medium
That’s what McHale gets for not responding to my questions.
I looked at last night’s local ratings for Indianapolis (because that’s where I live) and all of the NBC shows were up compared to last week. Then I read this and I… I just don’t know anymore.
You are dumb, not America. people download and do other ways of viewing than live tv, networks do what they want anyway so ratings are a joke. I downloaded a torrent to watch because I’m on vacation and no cable is near me. Say America is dumb to my face and I’ll get a phd, become a doctor, misdiagnose you with cancer and cut out your balls.
Thank the Lord you found this site. You may now read what SatanBigsby wrote. Thank you.
I’d have to be as dumb as america to let a Phd diagnose me with cancer and then get anywhere near my balls.
I feel I should tell you America is dumb… just for the fact it would seem to motivate you. And because Americans are usually dumb*
*including me
I’m really looking forward to next season’s NBC schedule featuring 2 hour episodes of the voice every single night.
97 episode order fro Revolution for 2013-14

Annie made that Samara costume WORK, girl!
I thought it was pretty sick too.
I thought that was the first time that Annie looked TRULY unattractive. Poor choice of costume!
I was busy watching the Big Bang Theory….let the rage ensue.
You are what is wrong with this country.
This *LAUGH TRACK* is *LAUGH TRACK* why *LAUGH TRACK* we *LAUGH TRACK* can’t *LAUGH TRACK* have *LAUGH TRACK* nice*LAUGH TRACK* things. *LAUGH TRACK**LAUGH TRACK*
Figured I’d write my comment in a way you could understand.
Chances are the Community is going to pull an Arrested Development/30 rock and knowing that they were going to be cancelled are going to get too sentimental in the second half of the season… The question is will they be able to do this like Arrested Development did (S.O.Bs is probably the most underrated episode in the series) or like 30 rock will they get a bit too sentimental at the expense of comedy?
30 Rock in no way got too sentimental.
Bullllllllshiiiiiiittt… The last half of the last season was a gigantic series of circlejerks/pats on the back. Give me a break.
shows I watch when they actually come on do worse than the shows I dvr… Im sorry guys I am the reason why Happy Endings, Don’t trust the B, and Community get so low ratings.
I was part of the problem as I was out last night. *shrugs shoulders* Last week was so off that seeing such a dip in the ratings shouldn’t be overly surprising. It’s not like the reviews for the first 3 episodes were glowing.
Everybody go to NBC.com and watch it. Or just have it running in a background window. Whatever.
i will stream it on loop muted on all the computers i have…
Thank you! I was wondering if anyone else made this point. It doesn’t count as much as first run viewers, but it counts about as much as delayed DVR ratings. At least it gives NBC a metric.
On it. I even disabled Ad Block for them.
I was going to do this, but then NBC thought they wouldn’t allow the world outside of America watch their shows online legally…
I watched it on the Canadian feed’s website. And I’ll never, ever do that again. Each commercial segment aired 4 commercials.
This is how Celebrity Wife Swap happens
to be fair, it was a pretty horrible episode this week
It was actually a pretty good episode. Then again, it’s kind of hard to screw up a halloween special. My only complaint — and this goes back to the Harmon era– is that Troy has devolved into a 5 year old. As if a really good highschool quarterback didn’t know what the S&M stuff was in Pierce’s playroom.
Can’t imagine that a Halloween episode in February might not draw a lot of viewers.
Yes, laugh tracks suck. Yes, Community was better last year. But this year Big Bang is just better written, the story it tighter, it’s just better. Hate me if you like, but BB is finding new ground, Community is just wandering. They’ve completely lost Troy’s character, Abed is treading water, the lot of them seem as stunned as we are that Britta and Troy are in bed, and I have never in my life seen anything as awkward and nonsexual as those two waking up in the morning. The odds that those two people just had sex are about zero. They looked like kids on a campout.
I hope they can fix it. A year ago I would have traded every BB ever to be made for one good animated Community Christmas special. But the truth is the truth; BB has found a voice, for a minute at least. And Community is lost trying to get off campus. Anyone who can’t see that is stuck in hipster hatred of laugh tracks and can’t see past it.
