For those of you who didn’t already know, you may be crushed, but unsurprised, to find out that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelpia — save for a few exterior shots — is actually filmed in Los Angeles. The only surprise to me, actually, is that it’s not filmed in Toronto or Vancouver. As you can see below, from the Google Maps shot, the location is the corner of Mateo street and Palmetto streets in L.A.

Anyway, it turns out the the location of the show’s bar, Paddy’s Pub, is a popular location in other television shows and films. In fact, someone on Reddit connected an exterior shot on Parks and Recreation to Paddy’s Pub.

It’s not just Parks and Rec, however. “Paddy’s Pub” can also be seen in the background of one of the Fast and Furious movies (please don’t ask me which one). (via)

As well as Sons of Anarchy (via).

Also, unsurprisingly, The League (via).

Repo Man also filmed a scene there.

Even Bear Grylls filmed a deodorant commercial there.
Though I have no photographic proof, apparently The Wire, Southland, and Mad Men have also filmed in front of Paddy’s Pub. WORLDS COLLIDING. I hope Frank gets a piece of the revenue.

I wonder what exactly gives the show that Philly localization. Maybe they rely on our ignorance to pull it off. lol
It’s the attitude of a bunch of loud, drunk, idiot assholes that says “Philly”
Lobster nailed it.
They did shoot on location here frequently in the first five or so seasons, but it’s tapered off.
Mac (Rob Mcelhenney) is from Philadelphia. So that is why he decided the show should take place in Philadelphia. No other significance.
Well, they do say write what you know…
My only gripe is that the gang and Paddy’s are ostensibly supposed to be set in South Philly and there’s no way you’d find a space like that outside of Northern Liberties/Kensington.
I believe it is on the First 2 seasons dvds; Rob (Mac) talks about how the show came to be. They filmed a short pilot ([youtu.be] – is essentially the beginning of 2nd episode of the show where Dennis shows up to get the basketball and finds out Charlie has [fake] cancer) and it got picked up, so they started filling in the backstory and had to come up with a job these guys could do that they still would be able to get into all the hijinx and wackiness that most people with actual jobs couldn’t get away with —-> Bar owners… Where? Rob is from Philly, set in Philadelphia.
I’m not familiar with Philly or LA, so…
But I like Lobsters thought here, where else more-so embodies drunken assholeness? That city that throws batteries at people? Yeah… Yeah.
Being from the area, it’s pretty exciting to recognize places where they’re filming. And a bunch of my friends actually met them while they were filming at the shore. I imagine it’s much harder to film in the Philly area now considering the show is probably the most popular around here and they’d constantly get recognized.
Was the headquarters for the show Breaking In, the one with Christian Slater and the guy from Reaper, that same building?
Maybe? The Breaking In building is the same as the apartment on New Girl.
Which is actually only a block or two away from Paddy’s Pub; it’s over at Traction and Avery.
Thank you for addressing this. HAs been driving me crazy for quite awhile. The tv station I work at also had a anti-DUI PSA that was filmed in this location which I found insanely ironic.
Now if I can just get a write up on the dentist’s wife from Suburgatory being in EVERY COMMERCIAL ON TV I can lay both of my major TV conspiracies o bed. (Note her tv husband in the satellite commercial and her tv husband in the rooms to go/Buick ads are also in every commercial on TV.)
She’l always be Jack’s wife to me.
You mean Steve the Pirate’s wife?
What I want to know is, where’s the loft that all the New Girl cast live in? Looks very much like Downtown L.A., but I can’t quite place it.
Traction and Avery, just a couple of blocks away from Paddy’s. I could have sworn it was over by the Biscuit Company Lofts (further south on Mateo), but apparently it’s not.
The exterior is Traction and Avery. Not sure where they do the interior stuff.
And the exterior of the bar where Nick works is the Griffin, over in Atwater Village (within walking distance of my house!).
Yes, I work in Downtown LA and I’ve definitely seen the building that is the exterior and I THOUGHT that was The Griffin. Glad someone confirmed it.
Thanks, Zack!

I also spotted it on ABC’s Revenge:

I was lucky enough to meet Rob, Glenn, and Charlie the 2nd time they filmed outside of my work in Downtown LA. They were all very nice and down-to-earth. I was fangirling pretty hard for a good few months after that.
