I love these series of maps with state specific information about television shows and movies. This map, for instance, assigns a movie set in and best represents each state; likewise, this does the same for television shows; and this one for the best beer from each state. The above map comes from British artist and physicist James Chapman, and shows the locations of a lot of your favorite television series, including both real and fictional towns, which gives everyone an excuse to say, “Hey! That show is filmed in my home state.” Sadly, my home state of Arkansas is not represented (Evening Shade, thank you very much!), while my current state of residence, Maine, is sadly only represented by Dark Shadows and Murder She Wrote (no Once Upon a Time?).
Click on the map for a larger look. What else is missing (besides Justified in Kentucky)? Also, if your nerdish predilections swing toward architecture, here’s the detailed floor plans for a bunch of TV Shows, including The Simpsons (below).

No Harlan, no care.
I had phrased it as “Where the fuck is Justified?” but otherwise, yes.
same damn reaction.
FNL the TV show is in Dillon, not Odessa. That’s where the movie and book were set.
[/nerd]
Also, Northern Exposure says “hi”…
Mary Tyler Moore Show was in Minneapolis.
Laverne & Shirley in Milwaukee. I mean, what the fuck? WHAT GRAB ASS MADE THIS MAP?
“Let’s see, I need to include a show from New Mexico to really fill the southwest part of the map. What’s that show everyone loves that’s set there? Oh, right, ROSWELL.”
AAAAND, I missed Albuquerque above Roswell. I am the one who fails to read well.
Mork & Mindy was in Boulder, CO
One Day At A Time was in Indianapolis, IN
Since when has Community taken place in Colorado??! I always assumed it was somewhere in California…
Greendale’s always been in Colorado. They mention it very early in the series.
Given that Harmon himself described the show as being based off his experience at Glendale Community College (right next to LA), I think your original assumption was the correct one.
Hmm, according to Wikipedia, Chimpo is right. I’ll let Bobby the Baboon know.
The cast refers to the show being supposedly set in Colorado quite a bit in the DVD commentaries; they joke about global warming being the reason as to why there are so any palm trees.
They’ve made it very clear in-universe that it’s supposed to be set in Colorado, and all of the main characters except for Chang and Pierce are natives of Colorado. Like Arden said, the joke is that they make no effort to hide the fact that it’s filmed in California, mocking the ubiquitous attempts to pass off California as other places in film and television.
Oh yeah, as for my my home state…there is an entire show named after Tenneseee’s capital. Also, didn’t Jason Lee have a short lived show about Memphis?

WKRP in Cincinnati. The city’s right there in the title. I mean, really!
Not to mention, The Drew Carey Show taking place in Cleveland.
Also, where’s Matlock? MAAAAATLOOOOOOCK!!!!!!
Archer. NYC.
I mean, can we just set this fucking map on lackluster fire now?
Seattle is apparently a landlocked mountain city. Explains all the rain.
“Seattle: Right next to Moses Lake; and you didn’t even know it.”
Despite all our griping and nitpicking, can we agree that this map is kinda cool? No? Never mind. I guess I just like liking things.
Clearly we can’t set the map on fire. I was kidding. I mean, how does one even burn the internet?
Aside from crappy Nicholas Sparks movies, Eastbound & Down is basically the only thing filmed here that also takes place here.
Thank God for Kenny Powers.
Growing Pains is set in Huntington, Long Island.
The Wire, but no Homicide?
Grey’s Anatomy, but no Scrubs?
King of Queens, but no All in the Family?
And where the bloody hell is CHiPs?!?
While you’re all upset about the US map, I’m bothered by the apartment/house floorplans. They are highly detailed and accurate for the shows they represent, but they are architecturally weird. Few old apartment buildings have anything other than right angles inside and out. I could accept that Frasier’s building was a modern one with some odd angles, but not the apartments on Friends and Seinfeld. Yes, I’m a nitpicking nerd.
[looks up from making out with cheerleader girlfriend]
[notices open locker]
[zips up letterman jacket, advances upon Peter Cavan]
Pete & Pete was at east filmed in Cranford, NJ so was that show starring the guy that plays JD’s brother on Scrubs I can’t remember its name.
*at least
I dont know if was supposed to take place in NJ though.
Wasn’t it Ed?
They also filmed in Ridgewood, NJ and Pete & Pete filmed some stuff in Wayne, NJ.
Family Ties was Columbus OH…right?
How about The League in Chicago?
And Boy Meets World in (ok, not in the city) in Philly
God, I wish Arlen was a real place in Texas.
It is. It’s called every place in Texas
/Texan
I hereby claim House of Cards for Washington, DC
The Walking Dead hasn’t been in Atlanta since season one.
No critique, awesome map. But ….
Vegas
Miami Vice
Nashville
Magnum PI, Hawaii 5-0 and Northern Exposure to stretch the map
This post brought to you by aspergers
The Golden Girls floor plan is totally, completely wrong. Also, I believe Frasier had a room for his son Freddy, and the bathroom by his front door was way bigger.
Also, NO ROSEANNE OR MARRIED WITH CHILDREN?
Married with Children is on the map.
No, the house layouts.
What about The Americans or Sons? Also, where does Raising Hope take place, do they ever say?
Natesville. I’m assuming in Northern Virginia.
I’m going to be *that guy*, but the Flight of the Conchords isn’t set in Brooklyn, it’s in Chinatown in Manhattan, largely.
Notable omissions:
1) The Shield, ‘Farmington’, Los Angeles, CA
2) Brotherhood, Providence, RI
3) Sons of Anarchy, ‘Charming’, California
Nashville.
Haven’t you heard we’re all the rage right now?
Buffalo Bill wants the map to remember that New York is a pretty big state. Christina Applegate (Jesse) probably would rather it forget.
San Diego as the home of “Drake and Josh”?
Not going out like that. Its “Simon and Simon” or get the fuck out.
I would also accept NTSF:SD:SUV
They really didn’t know where Seattle was in WA, did they?
Yeah seriously, how could they mess that up so badly?
I always thought Sunnydale was located in the Valley. If it was located by the ocean there would be more talk of going to the beach and surfers. When I can only remember one time when they went to the beach in college…Willow made it rain while trying to start a fire.
I’m pretty sure it’s located on the Hellmouth.
Too many damn shows set in NY and LA.
No Mention of “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper” in Oakland?
No Gulfhaven, FL? For shame!
They put Pawnee on the wrong side of the state. In a recent episode they mentioned leaving Jerry in Martinsville, which is SW of Indianapolis, so it’d be really silly to drive that way and then to where they have it on the map.
There was also some car garage themed show that was set in Indianapolis, was on for a year or two back in the early 90s.
Oh, and The Middle is set in Indiana.
And That ’70s Show wasn’t set in Milwaukee, it was Point Place and IIRC was around an hour to Milwaukee.
Me have reading disability apparently.
Hot in Cleveland? Obvs.
An embarrassing lack of Full House in San Francisco.
We seem to be missing two states here… (a common mistake). I’d also love an effort to identify at least one show in every US state. Were no shows ever set in North Dakota?
I’m from North Dakota and I don’t think any fictional shows have ever used the setting. We have been in a couple oil documentaries, a reality show, An episode of Extreme Home Makeover, and two of our cities were used in the film Fargo.
If you want Vermont, the only thing I know about the place is Bob Newhart ran an inn there. Unless the final show is canon.
Mayberry, North Carolina? New Rochelle? Seriously, Dick Van Dyke and Andy Griffith.
Clearly less important TV shows than “Two Guys & A Girl” in Boston.
Grimm should be there for Portland, OR.
How could they possible ignore Minneapolis MN, location of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”?
Or Cincinnati, Ohio, home of “WKRP in Cincinnati”?
Or Honolulu, home of both “Hawaii Five-O” and “Magnum PI”?
I’d include “Bluebell”, Alabama (from The CW’s Hart of Dixie), just to fill more of the map.
“In Plain Sight” also took place in Albuquerque.
