I am a big fan of those “what could’ve been” stories, specifically about the actors and actresses who auditioned for roles that have since become iconic, or at least very well known. Like the fact that Django Unchained was originally written for Will Smith, or that Brad Pitt was Ben Affleck’s first choice for the lead in Argo, or that Emma Stone was originally cast in the Brie Larson role in 21 Jump Street but had to bail for The Amazing Spider-Man.
Yesterday, Rainn Wilson posted to his Facebook wall the original sign-in sheet for The Office auditions, and besides finding out that Wilson was the first to sign in, and that he tried out for the roles of both Michael Scott and Dwight Schrute, we also found out several other people who auditioned for various roles in the series. Not all the names are familiar, but many of the faces are. Check out the list, with images, and try to picture these people in the roles made famous by Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Rain Wilson, and Jenna Fischer.
Those Auditioning for Michael Scott
Ben Falcone (Bridesmaids, although his best known as Melissa McCarthy’s husband)

Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Suburgatory)

Those Auditioning for Jim Halpert
Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation, Generally Awesome Stuff)

Here’s the sign up sheet via Rainn Wilsons’ FB page.

Put Matt Besser in all the shows!
Actually, he’s sort of on his way to this anyway. Don’t think!
Wash as Michael Scott would’ve been AMAZING and Hamish Linklater sounds like a potions professor at Hogwarts.
Also, Chloe as Pam? Think of all the snark we missed out on.
As amazing as Adam Scott would have been as Jim, I think they got the casting right if you don’t let the post-Season 7 bitterness that most of Us have cloud our judgement (Also, he wouldn’t be able to Ben if he had gotten the job.)
Goddammit, Alan Tudyk is wonderful.
This.
Matt Price was great on Men of a Certain Age…would have made a great weaselly Dwight.
If I recall correctly, wasn’t Nick Offerman also considered for the role of Dwight? Or am I just assuming so because he played a similar character in (the actually somewhat decent) “American Body Shop”?
As much as i like most of these people, i think The Office was cast perfectly. The Office in it’s prime was comedy gold.
Adam Scott and Alan Tudyk would have been fun, but I think they nailed the casting for those parts. And wow, I absolutely cannot see Mary Lynn Rajskub as Pam.
Steve the Pirate. That is all.
Gail the Snail as Pam? Only if Charlie can bust in once a season to salt her.
She was actually offered the role but, was reportedly too busy “giving Frank a handy under the table.”
Rainn Wilson as Michael/Jim would have been great. Too bad they didn’t give him both.
So two of the leads didn’t actually have to audition? I kinda get Steve Carrell, who at least had Anchorman and The Daily Show to his name, but Krasinski’s biggest roles before the Office were billed as “Messenger #3″ and “Flea Club Candidate 1.”
More importantly: WHO WAS NUMBER 15? (Or was that Krasinski?)
This is one day of auditions. I’m sure there were many more days.
Grode was hilarious in Undeclared. I miss that show.
This.
Pretty cool to see the sheet.
Steve The Pirate as Michael Scott? Yes, please…
I’m sure Adam Scott would have made Jim far less of a douche.
I thought Pam WAS Mary Lynn Rajskub for the longest time. “It’s that chick from Dude, Where’s My Car!”
