HBO has released another trailer for the upcoming season of Game of Thrones, and upon close examination of the 90 seconds of footage I think I can definitively say that I am going to die before the season premiere. That’s all I could think while I was watching it: I am going to die. I mean, how the hell am I supposed to wait until March 31 when everyone keeps taunting me like this? That’s almost two full weeks away. I’ll never make it. I’ll explode all over the walls by then.
Think of it like a gauge that measures radiation, or any other potentially dangerous substance. The first trailer and dragon silhouette poster had the needle in the orange. The fan-made 90s opening credits and Princess Bride mash-up videos sent it firmly into the red. Now, with the release of this trailer, steam is shooting out of my ears and all sorts of alarms and buzzers are going off. I’m basically one more trailer or a music video of footage set to a DMX song away from total meltdown. Seek shelter immediately.

SHUT UP AND TAKE MY DVR MEMORY.
Hoo boy.
I couldn’t help but be reminded of that shitty Tron movie the whole time and that was still amazing.
Game on Throns.
Olivia Wildelings.
Please don’t disparage Daft Punk.
Tron movie =! Tron soundtrack.
I own the soundtrack, shit’s bomb.
It always trips me out when official trailers use music from other properties
“The Game Has Changed” tis fitting and relevant.
Now we patiently wait for the next trailer with Triple H’s “Time to Play the Game” and/or Lil’ Flip’s “Game Over.”
AHH DRAGONS ALL THE DRAGONS BOOK THREE OH GOD OH GOD
I’ve decided instead of calling people assholes, we should just call them Greyjoys. Discuss.
Damn it, I like Asha/Yara.
As do I, and Theon is actually one of my favourite characters, no matter how much hate people like to ladle on him. He’s a tragically misguided, insecure person, and he’s about to start paying for his mistakes a thousand times over. I could never hate him.
*As do I, Billybob,
I like Asha (I’m not going to call her Yara) but the rest of the Iron Islanders are dickheads. This is known.
A Man believes that Asha is only a good character when compared to the rest of her people.
A woman believes that Asha is badass, particularly when compared to all other Westerosi females who lack agency.
I like Asha, but I hardly think she’s the only major female character with agency. .
A man would point a woman to a woman who is a match with swords with the Kingslayer, a 12 year-old superassassin in-training, the she-bears of a certain island, oh and a woman with 3 dragons and an army of supersoldiers.
Listen guys and gals. You’re hijacking my discussion, and just generally being a bunch of Greyjoys.
(Totally works)
Hijack your discussion? Oh really I thought this was America? Guess this is a communist country. (pants fall down as police escort into car)
Now all I can think about is watching that trailer with DMX’s overdubbed voice asking, “YOU THINK THIS A GAME?”
MAKE THIS HAPPEN INTERNET!!
*pounds keyboard repeatedly*
I don’t even care that he doesn’t say the word “game,” I amused the hell out of myself with this.
Have we decided yet if it is better to read the books and then watch it. Cause I just started the third book and reading it is okay to get backstory, but book is long.
Third book is more than okay. Keep reading.
Keep going, it’s the best one.
I just finished the 2nd one after watching the show, I don’t know if it was because I knew what happened but it was a bit of a chore. I do know a few things that happen in this one but it does seem easier to read.
Definitely better to read the book first. Then you can argue like a dick with everyone else that the changes are so wrong!
I’m in the book camp as well. And 3 is the best of the bunch.
Keep going on book 3, it will payoff handsomely.
All of the changes the show has made have been for the better and/or were necessary for effective translation to the medium of television. As for you, Matt, the book is definitely great, and you should read it. I’d save it for after the season’s over, in your position. I read the books before seeing any of the series, which I think works out well, but you have to be able to keep the entities separate in your mind.
I’d advise waiting but only because I enjoyed Season 1 more than last year (after I read all the books) because it ‘s just a much more gripping viewing exp not knowing what will happen next.
@Board I mostly agree that most of the changes made have been good/necessary. However, I really don’t like what they have done with Jon Snow’s character.
I disagree about reading after watching, if only for the reason that reading the main plotlines after the fact is a little laborious. If there is any book you should read first, it is the 3rd one. But good news- you only need to read until about 2/3 through before you catch up with where the end of this coming season will be. Then you can take all next year to read the end of ASOS and maybe start AFFC.
@Jamaal Jon Snow is one of the weaker parts of the books for me, especially his story with the Halfhand in Book 2, so I appreciated how condensed it was, but they certainly could’ve conveyed the ideas behind the Halfhand’s sacrifice a little better. Otherwise, not sure what the issue may be.
I haven’t seen any season without having read the books, as I said, and I preferred season 2 to season 1, as good as season one is. If we’re going to use words like enjoyed, yeah, I’d still say I enjoyed it more.
SPOILERISH
I’d say that S2 mostly missed to shape the Halfhand better, so what BWaNiI said. One other thing was that Stannis already made Davos his Hand, but since we didn’t see Florents, a delay most likely would have no payoff in this season (really liked this in the book).
IMO, one could nitpick a lot about small stuff, especially at Harrenhal (like the way Arya ordered Amory Lorch’s death, or how her interactions with Tywin were set up).
But this a lot like the scene with Tywin in S1 where he butchered a deer: It makes absolutely no sense that he would do such a thing himself, but it worked very well TV wise (and had symbolic meaning etc). At Harrenhal, it gave the opportunity to show a human side of Tywin (who is quite a character), which wasn’t possible in the books because of the narrative structure.
I hate HBO’s Jon Snow because they turned my 3rd favorite character into a bumbling fool.
I adore the Harrenhall storyline in S2 so much. I’ll even admit that my fondness for it may obscure my ability to detect any issues regarding what you mentioned, but I saw no issue with Amory Lorch being urgently killed or the set-up on her becoming Tywin’s cupbearer. More importantly though, besides developing Tywin, which I certainly appreciated as he is indeed a great character, the Harrenhall arc works really well as a distinctive chapter in Arya’s character arc. Tywin in the role of the twisted mentor shaping her mindset (accompanied with the lesson regarding misplaced anger and lashing out against the bullies rather than the ringleaders like Tywin) helps to inform her behavior later on in the series better than that lesson by itself, the redundant abuse from the staff and brief interaction with Jaqen as in the book. As well, the show effectively created a better reason for her to not kill Tywin. She actually kind of liked him, and only remembered that he was going to war with her brother when it was too late, because he was off going to war.
@Jamaal I keep hearing people say that, and I just don’t see it.
I did like the scene in which Stannis makes Davos his Hand, but that in itself is not enough to merit the time that would’ve been spent and how it might’ve affected pacing.
Also, it amuses me that my name apparently merits an acronym. Just call me Board, mate. Or LB, based on my handle over at Pajiba.
Dannis/Stavos: You’re probably right. Thinking about it, they didn’t really show their bromance (and what a bromance it is, I can imagine Stannis passionately hugging Davos better then the same with Mel). You owe us something, B&W.
Harrenhal: It’s at a more lower level. The World’s most awful ASoIaF Site™ nitpicked it right away: The setup where Tywin called out one of his underlings because he had sent a letter to the wrong castle makes no sense, because Maesters do this, and the scene with Lorch is a bit unrealistic because he didn’t enlist any help, and Jaqen found the opportunity to do the kill immediately (not a Faceless Men modus operandi).
As I said: Nitpicking, and it worked great on TV, providing a bit comic relief. Gotta think about what you said concerning Arya.
At 1:09, is it Stannis cuddling with Melisandre?
Wouldn’t you be if she was your own personal priestess of the Lord of the Light?
Not sure about myself (Mel is more then a bit scary), but Stannis Baratheon? Way to dutiful, in my book.
Yeah, this is weird. I mean, it’s clearly implied in the books that they sleep together. But if they’re going to be all lovey-dovey now, I’m not sure I’m fine with that. It’s Stannis, is a cold motherfucker for R’hllor’s sake!
*he’s … ugh, kill me.
Eh, we don’t know the context for the scene either way, but it didn’t look affectionate to me.
Who’s… is that a lady fighting with an Arakh? I can’t place that.
I think that’s Daario
If you mean at :37, that’s Daario.
Okay, well, dude’s kind of hot. In a guy way.
DRAGONS DRAGONS DRAGONS OMG OMG OMG OMG GIMME DRAGONS
When are we getting GOT commenting badges? I like printing them out and sewing them to my orange safety vest before I go walking with Gramms.
They prepared badges, but WTF, man? Arya at 4? This is an outrage.
Arya > Robb
