HBO’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ Has An End Date In Mind

HBO’s Game of Thrones could run for 28 seasons, and no one would complain. Or if someone did start to complain, they wouldn’t be able to finish the sentence because I, you, the Internet would strap them to a giant X and play “The Rains of Castamere” with a horn every time they tried to fall asleep. Alas, 25 years from now, everyone will be torrenting the show, so Jon Snow’s coat grooming budget alone would bankrupt HBO. Eventually, it has to end.

We know George R.R. Martin will end the book series after seven titles — the five that are already out and the two more he’ll eventually write, once he finishes watching The Great Gatsby for a 15th time — which is also how many seasons producer Frank Doelger thinks the HBO series will run, too.

Speaking backstage at the BAFTAS, Doelger said: “[The number of series] is being discussed as we speak. The third season was the first half of book three, season four will be the second part of book three. George RR Martin has written books four and five; six and seven are pending.

“I would hope that, if we all survive, and if the audience stays with us we’ll probably get through to seven seasons.” (Via)

This comes as a slight surprise — season three is only covering the first half of book three, with the second half taking place during season four, so I, like many, had assumed the show would last more seasons than there will be books. But NOPE, and it means fans won’t able to see so much. If D.B. Weiss and David Benioff leave out the part of A Feast for Crows where Drogon and Bronn co-own a fantasy football team, the Dragbronns, we riot.
