Here’s The Free ‘Game Of Thrones’ 8-bit Video Game We Didn’t Know We Needed

Game of Thrones is now available as a fan-made, downloadable freeware game. Abel Alves is calling it Game of Thrones The 8-bit Game although it’s closer to 16-bit. This side-scroller lets you play four characters — Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, Tyrion Lannister, and Davos Seaworth — through four levels based on the book series. Alves picked those four characters based on story arcs that would make for a good game level.

Alves is a 31-year-old engineering draftsman and comic book artist with a law degree who moved from Spain to Uruguay seeking work. It took him three months to make the game using Arcade Game Studio software. The 8-bit music covers of “Game of Thrones” and “Rain of Castemere” were composed by Floating Point, and some backgrounds were designed by Carl Olsson.

Alves based the Game of Thrones game on Sega titles he played as a kid, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Wonder Boy. Sonic would have been much cooler if he could have tossed direwolves at Doctor Robotnik.

Here’s the trailer and a gameplay video of the Jon Snow level, complete with the aforementioned direwolf projectiles.

Game of Thrones The 8-bit Game for Windows OS is available free here.
