Vince Gilligan Wants Mike Ehrmantraut Back For ‘Better Call Saul,’ If Possible

Details about Better Call Saul have somehow been both scarce and abundant since the Breaking Bad spinoff was officially announced. It seems like every interview with Vince Gilligan or Bob Odenkirk reveals something new that isn’t confirmed and might be nothing, unless it isn’t, in which case it would be something. It’s going to be a prequel. Kind of! It’s going to feature more courtroom action. Maybe! Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul will make cameos. Probably! I’ve never almost known more about anything in my life.

Along those lines, Vince Gilligan did a big year-end Q&A with Entertainment Weekly, in which he confirmed that, you know what, he’d really like to have Mike back, too, if they can make the schedules work out.

How many characters from Breaking Bad might pop up or even have an extended role?

The character that springs to mind would be Mike (Jonathan Banks). That would be a great deal of fun. I would say the sky’s the limit, at least theoretically speaking. Realistically speaking, we’ve got a whole lot of actors, and the world is now well-aware of their wonderful talents and abilities, and therefore Breaking Bad has probably made it tougher for Peter and I to get some of these folks pinned down for another TV show. They’re off making big movies and doing Broadway plays and whatnot, and that’s exactly the way it should be. That is a high-class problem that we will have to contend with as we go forward with Better Call Saul, if we do indeed want to touch base with some of these characters… Better Call Saul could be The Love Boat of its generation, where instead of Milton Berle showing up in a sailor’s cap, hopefully it could be Aaron Paul, also in a sailor’s cap. [Laughs]

For the record, and not that my two cents matters a lick here, this Breaking Bad/Love Boat thing has my full support. Someone cancel Better Call Saul and get Huell a captain’s uniform, pronto.
