Guess Who Will Be On The Mid-Season Premiere Of ‘The Walking Dead’? (Hint: The Governor)

This news was a blip in a TV Guide spoilers Q&A last week, and though it hasn’t been widely publicized, The Walking Dead folks want us to know that The Governor will be on the mid-season premiere of the series. They don’t want to hype it because, I think, his appearance will likely be a non-factor and the people behind The Walking Dead don’t want to be on the hook for any expectations that an actual announcement of his return would create, but they do want the ratings that come with the curiosity viewers may have about how the Governor is returning.

Let me explain:

Last week, in that TV Guide Q&A, we learned that the mid-season premiere will focus largely on Rick and Carl, and that the Governor will make an appearance:

Don’t expect to see too many familiar faces since Rick and Carl take center stage when the AMC drama returns. While Rick heals from his beating from The Governor — whom you will see again — Carl will lose something very important to him. (No, not his innocence!)

If you’d seen this, you might say, WTF? The Governor is back? How? Well, rather than point us toward the post of the well-known TV Guide that broke this news, The Walking Dead executive producer and director Gale Anne Hurd specifically retweeted this piece, from the lesser known The Examiner, which speculates on the return:

However, this spoiler also confirmed that fans will see The Governor again. He was killed and then shot in the head during the mid-season finale, but it is possible that Rick will be so badly hurt by the fight that he hallucinates the villain.

And that’s probably why The Walking Dead doesn’t want to hype the return of The Governor: Because he’s just another lousy Rick hallucination. Let’s hope that Rick’s hallucination of Lori runs off with Rick’s hallucination of The Governor, they get married and have boring psychopathic baby hallucinations, and after this episode, we’re finished with cheap hallucination cameos.

The mid-season premiere of The Walking Dead, by the way, is this Sunday on AMC.
