Music is an effective method of torture. The mere thought of being forced to listen to Smash Mouth’s “I’m a Believer” at an eardrum-splitting volume is enough to make me want to reveal how I’ve been spying on America’s nuclear power plants for the Koreans, I mean, what’s a power plant? Anyway, it’s well known that Metallica was used to cause sleep deprivation for Iraqi POWs, but that’s SOOOO mainstream of America. When you want to look cool while doing something despicable to another human, you gotta go with Canadian industrial band Skinny Puppy.
Just don’t tell them. Via the Phoenix New Times:
“We heard through a reliable grapevine that our music was being used in Guantanamo Bay prison camps to musically stun or torture people,” founder cEvin Key explains by phone from his Los Angeles home. “We heard that our music was used on at least four occasions. So we thought it would be a good idea to make an invoice to the U.S. government for musical services, thus the concept of the record title, Weapons.”
So how did you feel learning your music was being used liked this?
“Not too good,” Key continues. “We never supported those types of scenarios. … Because we make unsettling music, we can see it being used in a weird way. But it doesn’t sit right with us.” (Via)
Ain’t that America fer ya? They can’t even use an ol’ fashioned AMERICUH song to get dem terrorists to talk.
