My love for troll quotes began the day after Bin Laden's death when people began mass sharing Mark Twain and MLK quotes that weren't actually Mark Twain or MLK quotes. I remember thinking "Nailed it, Twain" when I saw "'I've never wished a man dead, but I have read some obituaries with great pleasure.' - Mark Twain" cross my Twitter feed multiple times. We all kind of trolled ourselves that day.
Cognizant pop culture quote trolling and the meme that followed can be traced back to this Reddit thread from December where a Redditor attempted to anger Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings fans all with one image (first slide). What has followed is thousands of attempts to duplicate the lulz and pop culture resonance.
The best variations hit on all three elements (image, quote, attribution), with the attribution really bringing the whole thing home. Here are my first two attempts to contribute, followed by a slideshow of 40 or so of the absolute best of pop culture troll quotes. Hard to believe, but 95% of the attempts out there are lazy and suck a fat one. Bring the funnies or GTFO my grandpa always said.

Whoa! people are trolling in the comment section on a piece on trolling. That’s so meta!
Wait, Jason Bourne never said “yippie-ki-yay mother fuckers” that was John McClane.
Kind of disappointed the comment trolling isn’t a quote from Lulzsec, attributed to Anonymous, with a photo of Al Gore attached.
