Ever wonder what an animal whose whole life has been dedicated to pharmaceutical research looks like when and if it is ever let out of a cage?
Forty male beagles raised inside a lab in Spain arrived in Los Angeles last week where they will be put up for adoption after being freed from captivity by the Beagle Freedom Project.
The rescue mission is the largest yet for the group Animal Rescue Media Education (ARME). A total of 72 dogs were rescued in the effort, 32 of them having already been adopted in Europe, according to NBC Los Angeles.
ARME’s Beagle Freedom Project spokesman Gary Smith said the beagles, all between ages 4 and 7, had lived in cages their entire lives.
“We’ve been told they lived one per cage in rooms of 10 beagles, but they never had any physical interaction with one another,” Smith told the station. “They’ve been in kennels since they were rescued about a week ago, but aside from that, they’ve spent most of their lives locked up.”
If you love dogs and can get past the cheesy music at the beginning, the video after the jump will absolutely melt your heart. Have some Kleenex ready.

By all means, feel free to follow UPROXX on Facebook and Twitter.

Dogs>People. I swear to God if I have any beauty products that aren’t cruelty free I’m gonna knife myself.
@Phx…Watching this made me want to do all sorts of irrational things, namely shun all pharmaceuticals.
Cuteness overload
Isn’t the Kimberly-Clark Corp (Kleenex) one of the companies that do use animal testing?
I shouldn’t look at this stuff at work. Now I have to go…adjust my contacts.
/doesn’t wear contacts
they said get the tissues ready and i didn’t listen!!!! I gotta go hug my beagle now!
What am I using as a consumer that gets tested on Beagles? I’ll gladly give up whatever it is.
@Gray, I want to know the same thing
Jesus, it’s hard to justify this for non-lifesaving products.
Make that impossible.
Use the “animals” on death row to test these products on!!!! I have a lot more sympathy for animals than I do for those monster in prison that murder, rape and molest!
Thank you to those who made this happen! This is a wonderful story. Thank you!

@Justice
Well, the sad fact is the Eighth Amendment prohibits cruel and unusual punishment, so we couldn’t use those on the death row as testers. This is sad, though. I’m glad those dogs are in happier homes.
I can’t stop crying, this was such a great story. And for the record, Fleetwood Mac is not cheesy!!
I loved this video! And I’m with shantrbl; Fleetwood Mac is not and never has been cheesy. There are lots of great beagle rescue organizations all over the country so if one of these guys isn’t available for you check on line. I have a beagle mix and he is the best dog ever!
Oh jesus, here come the water works.
its great the dogs are free, but they couldn’t have been treated that badly because they wouldn’t have been as friendly with the people
Clearly you’re an expert on this matter ‘realist’.
this is what my kids looked like when i let them out… brings back fond memories!
@realist How about I lock you up in a cage? I’ll test stuff on you and feed you, but no other treatment. For at least 2-3 years you get nothing but food, water, and drugs. And not good drugs.
I love science, and I love animals. I think there is a lot to be learned from animal research; however, researchers need to show their test animals with a little more compassion. Animals need some one on one bonding time and a chance to exercise and play. Research animals are still living creatures and should be treated with kindness.
How adorable are those sweet and INNOCENT beagles! God bless ARME for showing so much love and compassion for the innocent animals! Animals were not put on this earth for testing!!!
How can anyone call Fleetwood Mac’s music “cheesy”?
This is a great story, I truly love reading about this rescue, but people, no way is Fleetwood Mac Cheesy!!
this made me totally cry! love how they have rescued such beautiful dogs and now they have a better life to lead! x would totally adopt one of them!
To be honest, I would have preferred that you hadn’t wasted a lot of time with the emotional build up and folk music. I actually want to know WHERE you found these dogs and what I can do to help legally go after these labs that emotionally, if not physically, torture these animals. Believe me, the emotion was there for me already, it didn’t need any help from a guitar. Just give me some facts as to who I need to help and who I need to go after!
I will take them all please kthanksbai. <3 why are animals so damn precious?!
Yes, its touching. But, drug testing is vital (perhaps to you, personally). As for cosmetic testing, if not tested on something before you get it, then you are the guinea pig. I’m not sure whether “cruelty free” cosmetics, might not be based on some industry common knowledge, which came from animal testing. In that case, to be cruelty free, don’t you have to go “make up free”? Just asking!
There was a time when anybody could sell any “drug”, making any claim about it. They were called “patent medicines”, and I’ll assure you, you do not want to go back there. Now, they were cruelty free, because nobody bothered to test drugs, back then. But, patent medicines sometimes killed people, and always stole their money. I’m not sure if other practical avenues are available to test drugs, or not. But, your life is immensly better for the “safe and effective” drug laws. And they require thurough testing of drugs. If humans and animals turn out to be the only rational choices, for test subjects, are you personally, now volunteering to test drugs yourself? No? Then animal testing, it is? If some other way of testing is available (like, say, robots) are you willing to pay double for your drugs to have them tested that way. Animals can always be treated better, but some animal testing may be needed at some point, in testing any drug. You willing to do without? (Only folks who need the drug are allowed an opinion on this, everybody else is just trolling!) Life is way more complicated than these simple sounding issues!
Who in H*ll said passengers have to be able to use cell phones in cars!? And, why are we talking about voluntary apps for cell phones? Cell phones aren’t the problem! Using cell phones while driving is the problem. So, make it impossible. When you turn on the engine, your cell no longer works. End of problem! (Thank you, thank you!) Look, when you drive, you voluntarily give up certain rights. (Like, you have to stop at stop signs, whether you want to, or not.) So, when you drive a car (or enter one, as a passenger) you voluntarily give up you right to use a cell phone. We can (if we desire) install in every car a device that cuts off cell phones, when the motor is turned on. What, force you to have something on your car, that you don’t want!? (Did anybody ask you if you wanted brakes on your car? Didn’t think so! Get the point?)
Let me explain it in simple terms. When you chose to live in a group, you voluntarily gave up certain rights. Among the rights that you gave up was the right to act like a lunatic at times. (Like by cell-phoneing while driving.) You want to cell phone and drive? Go live, on some deserted island. When you live in a group, you have to act like part of the group. As long as you live in my group, you need to act like a grown up, who follows group rules. You don’t like it? Rave on!!
Ok, it was touching. But, lets not go overboard on the condemnation. Are the “cruelty free” cosmetics really free of this testing, or just a generation removed? (ie, based on some industry common knowledge, which came from animal testing.) If your position is from principle, shouldn’t you find out, what exactly what your company bases its research on, and how they got that knowledge? As for drugs, at the moment, at some stage in development, all drugs (every one) needs to be tested on human surrogates (taking our place, so to speak), or we can start human testing at the earliest stages. (You DO NOT want to go back to untested drugs, read up on it!!) So, since so many people posting here like “How would you like to live like that challanges”, I’ve got one. How many of you will volunteer to be the first human guinea pig (literally) for a new drug? (Its either you, or that cute little beagle, who gets put in a cage, and tested on for a few years. Your choice!) Look, the world is complicated. There are absolutely NO EASY ANSWERS (not even your favorite easy answers). If you really care about those beagles, shouldn’t you be out trying to develop robots, to take their place?
I’m still trying to figure out what leap of logic makes you think that robots would ever equate biological organisms as far as drug testing is concerned.
what you guys r doing is the most amazing thing i have ever seen! no animal deserves to live in a cage they should be free and what you do is so great i wish there were more people like you guys in the world!
