Snoop Gets Technical: Snoop Dogg Helps Explain The Tupac Hologram And Other Mysteries Of Science

Derivations of the Coachella Tupac Hologram continue to inspire the internet unlike anything we’ve seen since Ridiculously Photogenic Guy two weeks ago. This go round though is slightly different — learning is involved! It all started when Roxanne Palmer of International Business Times took the initiative to explain how the Tupac Hologram actually worked. Time to get your learn on…

The “resurrection” of rapper Tupac Shakur wowed audiences at the Coachella music festival. But the illusion isn’t a hologram, as some have reported — it’s actually a 2-dimensional video cleverly projected using technology based on an old theatre trick.

Tempe, Ariz.-based AV Concepts orchestrated Tupac’s performance using Musion Systems Ltd.’s Musion Eyeliner setup that was able to project an animated version of Tupac (created by visual production house Digital Domain) onto a screen that appeared invisible to the audience.

The theater technique is called “Pepper’s Ghost,” and while it’s technically not a hologram we’re going to continue calling it a hologram since we’re pretty much all in on the term.

The best and most unexpected repercussion of Roxanne’s article is the diagram she made (above) to illustrate the concept. She for some reason felt the need to include an innocuous Snoop Dogg in the illustration, which has led the internet to believe Snoop is in fact required for all science to work. This, ladies and gentlemen, is how a meme is created.

Parodies using Snoop to explain other scientific principals are now popping up everywhere, largely in thanks to I Love Charts’ book promotion, “Snoop Gets Technical.” Strap in and prepare to get your learn on.
