January Jones Has Not Enjoyed The Whole ‘Fat Betty’ Thing Nearly As Much As The Internet Has

It’s no secret that one of our favorite aspects of this season of Mad Men has been January Jones’ Betty character being reduced to an occasionally appearing blob-fish — and the internet at large has joined us in delight over this.

But there’s someone out there who has HATED the whole Fat Betty storyline, and I’ll give you one guess who that person is (though I guess the headline kinda give it away)…

“I thought I was watching Eddie Murphy in The Klumps … I was like, ‘My career is over,’” (January Jones) told the Hollywood Reporter in a roundtable discussion with several other dramatic actresses talking about their work. Apparently she was laughing when she said this, but she does admit it took her awhile to get through the episode because watching her waddle on screen was difficult. “I went screaming into the other room,” she said.

In the same interview Jones gave some insight into one of the lingering mysteries of this season: why we’re seeing so little of Betty.

I started this season of Mad Men eight months pregnant, and I finished it with a 5-month-old. It was bizarre…We don’t ask Matt [Weiner] for anything. He’s extremely good at what he does, and it would be foolish of me to suggest anything. This season, I was lucky to be in four episodes because I was happy that he wrote a storyline for my character where I didn’t need to be there every day. I was struggling as a single mom with a new baby; I didn’t know what I was doing. He likes to give everyone sort of an arc, and you might not be there. He also likes to mess with the audience a bit. There’s only been one time where I’ve ever questioned anything he’s ever done.

So Jones’ sporadic appearances have more to do with her pregnancy than his hatred for her? So does this mean Matt Weiner doesn’t secretly loathe January Jones after all? Personally, I’m choosing to believe that he does, because I want to believe.
