
Succession fever — WHO HAS IT? Everyone, apparently.
Angry voters from 34 states have now started secession petitions on a White House website intended to let individual citizens express their opinions about the direction of the US government.
Whether these disgruntled folks are just conservatives venting about President Obama’s reelection, or whether they really believe they’d have a brighter future in the United State of Georgia, say, is an open question. But they’ve received a lot of media attention in recent days. (Via)
If you haven't visited the White House's website to view all the petitions lately, I strongly urge you to do so (sadly, the "legalize crystal fucking weed. SOOOOOO $TONED F*CK MAN AW $H*T" one is gone), but only after seeing if you live in one of the five states with the highest number of secede petition signatures. And to the surprise of no one, it just so happens that the states with the most petition signatures are the ones that receive the most money from the most financial help from the federal government. Go figure!

The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

My only problem with this is that once these state realize they need federal money, they’ll try to invade. And that’ll just be sort of embarrassing.

Try this twist: All of the Southern (and/or red state) boys and girls currently in the military decide to bring all their toys home to play. How much of our military is made up of good ol’ boys (and girls)?
Would make an interesting novel. I read one once about someone taking AK-47s back in time and arming the confederacy with them. Just as the South was about to wipe the Union Army off the map, Gen. Robert E. Lee had a change of heart upon witnessing the destruction of the United States and sabotaged the South. Pretty entertaining read.
Well, I was joking: These are fringe types who will NEVER get the federal go-ahead nor the proper number of votes to secede. But even if we gloss over that: Never happen.
First of all, all the toys are the property of the United States government, so taking them to a seceding state would be arms dealing. Secondly, they swore to defend the United States, not just the ones they like, and I’ve never met a military type who did not take that DEADLY seriously.
I think its a shame that we even need to have this discussion. I think State’s Rights/Powers are being eroded.
In the past if you wanted to live in a state with more progressive/liberal ideals/taxes/polices you had that option, same for conservatives. But I don’t think that is possible now, as the Federal government’s power overshadows the States.
For example, if you want to live in a community that shuns gay marriage you could move to Alabama, but if/when the Federal Government legalizes gay marriage despite what the state says, there is no where for you to go (in country that is, there’s always Iran for that like minded thinking – Not a slam against Alabama).
Better actual example. If you live in New York, NY, and you’re tired of high taxes, you can move to NC and save a little on state and city taxes but the Federal government is still going to take their chunk, and their’s is the heaviest punch of them all.
I don’t care what your beliefs are; pro-gun, high tax, pro-life, big oil, clean air, it doesn’t matter, because if States have the power, in the end, you’ll find a corner of this country where you can live that best suits your ideology.
TBone, the Federal Government has to have control over certain things. If someone is against gay marriage, they need to realize that they are denying basic rights to a human being, and the US government shouldn’t allow any of the states to deny people rights. There are absolutely issues that should be decided by the states, but federal laws rump state laws. Hawaii can’t decide to pass a state law that says that murder is legal there,; it just doesn’t work that way.
I’ve always said this country isn’t big enough for both Burnsy and me.

Texas is the only state out of the whole union that has it’s own power grid. They could actually secede and make it with electricity. It’s amazing to me that all the other states don’t seem to take this one piece of logistics into account.

If you look at the map of which states voted red or blue, there are a shitload of red states and a few blue metropolitan areas. But thank fucking Bob they’re enough.
Even Rick Perry recently said that suceeding was a stupid idea, so I think the Union is probably safe.
There aren’t a lot of deep thinkers in those particular states. It may be time to cut them loose, and let the harsh reality set in. If nothing else, it would give me an excuse to get the hell out of Florida.
