Last week, a whole bunch of people who are more famous and pretty than us filmed a PSA for Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal group, demanding a plan to end gun violence, whatever that means. Naturally, not everyone took the video well, including the unfortunately named Mike Hunt (can we create a John Doe-type name for people like this on YouTube?), who pieced together a mashup of “hyper-violent, trigger-happy footage against video of each celebrity wearing black and speaking in a hushed tone.”
So, who do we have to blame?
Jamie Foxx, Jason Bateman, Paul Rudd, Beyonce, Amy Poehler, Jeremy Renner, Amanda Pete, Jon Hamm, Carla Gugino, Jessica Alba, Reese Witherspoon, Rashida Jones, Will Ferrell, Sarah Silverman, Aziz Ansari, John Legend, Olivia Munn, Kathryn Hahn, Julianne Moore, Busy Phillips, Jennifer Garner, John Slattery, Nick Offermann, Chris Rock, Cameron Diaz, Courtney Cox, Christina Applegate, Zooey Deschanel, Steve Carrell, Adam Scott, Ellen Degeneres, Mark Ruffalo, Kate Hudson, Peter Dinklage, Jennifer Aniston, Elizabeth Banks, Max Greenfeld, Gwyneth Paltrow, Conan, Aubrey Plaza, Debra Messing, Megan Mullaly, Jennifer Westfeldt, Michelle Williams, Chris Paul, Victor Cruz (Via)
ZOOEYYYYYYYYY *raises fists to the sky* *pretends the sun’s an orange cat*

… My only takeaway from this is that this guy doesn’t understand that movies and TV aren’t real, thus he probably should not be armed.
It’s a good thing they arent real. Tom Haverford is a terrible shot.
Protect yoself!
If anything, one could make the argument that Hollywood glorifies the kind of cowboy hero every conservative likes to imagine themselves as. I’ve said it before on this site, but my roommate is a gun nut and every tragedy he feels a need to mention how if he had been there armed with his 9mm, that guy in riot gear throwing smoke bombs and wielding military-grade weapons wouldn’t have stood a chance. You know, because he’s just THAT good of a shot. *vomits on keyboard*
But yeah, most of these don’t count and are ridiculous. If it was 4:43 of badass action heroes shooting terrorists in the face this video would have more weight. The Parks and Rec hunting episode? Give me a break.
I’m gonna guess the point he wants to make is “These people decry guns but made ass-loads of money contributing to the glorification of guns”.
SuperHans, your roommate sounds like an asshole.
Ugh I love all those people but I’m not really going to take anything don draper, Tom Haverford, Schmidt, Ron Burgandy, Pookie, Rachel, Monica, Django, the little girl from Wreck it Ralph, Leslie Knope, Ron Swanson, Aaron Cross, the Invisible Girl, Michael Bluth, Brick Tamland, Veronica Corningstone or everyone else on that video as political advice.
Tyron Lannister on the hither hand? Well that’s a whole other story.
That sentence didn’t make sense, I am high
At least the “I’m not Zachary Quinto” line was funny.
Stupid video. How many of those celebs employ armed guards?
Yeah but that is a job. Soldiers and cops can be armed, the question is, should you, should I?
Yeah. As long as you and I aren’t bat shit crazy. There needs to better laws when it comes to crazy people. And better laws about how people secure their weapons.
Well most sates and legislators are adamantly against mental health support, issues or even awareness, coupled with the all too real fact that Americans have more guns than anywhere or anyone else and you’re bound to get a bunch of whackjobs shooting and killing innocent children.
So which right would you prefer to keep – the right to bear killing tools or the right to personal liberty and that of your children? Because clearly you (we) can’t assume both rights can co-exist peacefully when there is just so much gun violence in America.
What also plays into this debate, and what anti-legislators clearly ignore, is that guns only serve as a killing tool. Yes they have a deterrent aspect but they deter with the implication that they are killing tools. More killing tools = more tools that can kill = more killing.
But there is no real “answer” to any of this. The celebrities are trying to do what they feel is right and they want to use their celebrity for some good and some moron on youtube creates a lame montage of gun violence in movies, suggesting that THAT correlation is much more important to discuss than the other one, yknow, the one that got 20 children murdered a couple of weeks ago.
Like I said, don;t take guns away. Make it more difficult for loons to get them…
The fact of the matter is it does not matter how many violent shows and violent lyrics there are. If there is not access to guns then no matter how much the media effects an individual they won’t be able to act on it.
It’s interesting the number of the popular dramas on American TV now feature murders as sympathetic leads. It’s hard to imagine anything along the lines of Dexter or Breaking Bad on TV even 15 years ago but now killers and drug dealers are portrayed as complex anti-heroes regularly. I don’t think this is necessarily contributing to the problem but we are a culture shockingly obsessed with violence.

I will say that these celebrities do tend to be hypocrites on guns.
Whenever a shooting happens I am reminded of Chris Rock’s stand up abou bullet controll. Have all the guns you want, but make each bullet cost 5000$. “Better hope I can’t get a bullet on lay away”

Oh god so much stupid
The real question is, has Selena Gomez not had a role yet where she uses a gun? Can we get her one? Because that would be kinda hot.
Really though, there is a difference between fantasy and reality. Actors dwell in the realm of the former and psychopaths with easy access to assault rifles and grenades dwell in the latter. What’s that popular saying, “guns don’t kill people, people with guns do?” I would add to that with “fictional portrayals of guns don’t kill people, mentally unbalanced people who cannot or do not seperate fiction from real life, with guns kill people.”
Well said so I didn’t have to. Thanks.
pretty sure this “mashup” came off at least as douchey as the original PSA.
