Reader Timothy sent over the first video below and it is amazing. I’m not going to give it away; just watch the damn thing. It reminds me of Carousel in a good way. “Dead Island” is coming out for Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 some time this year. Here’s the premise:
The player is cast as a guest vacationing at the posh hotel. When the zombie outbreak occurs, he and a handful of other guests remain uninfected. They set out on a mission to escape the island, but along the way, they’ll uncover the secret behind the mysterious outbreak. Although Dead Island is a story-based experience, it’s built for co-operative play, and Deep Silver says up to four gamers can drop in and out of the game seamlessly. But if you don’t want to play with friends, you can also play through the game alone. [IGN]
Now here’s what makes it potentially more awesome than the typical survival horror: they don’t scatter unrealistic weapons and ammo all over this tourist resort; the weapons are items you’d actually find at a fancy hotel (this is also why we recommend always bringing shotguns on vacation, and how we got banned by Greyhound Lines). Also, the weapons wear down with each use until you have to replace them. Another realistic feature is the RPG system built into the game: your traits improve the longer you practice them. And even if the game turns out badly, at least they made a really awesome trailer:

Easily the greatest game trailer I have ever seen. Now let’s just hope the game lives up to it because the gameplay sounds an awful lot like Dead Rising, which I couldn’t stand.
Wow. That was tough to watch, but I couldnt look away. The game better be as good as the trailer.

Great, but there’s a problem.
It’s too real. It feels like a real zombie apocalypse. Who the fork in their right mind would want to be in one of those? It’s like the difference between video games and real war. It makes you feel sad and lost and lonely, a little bit like that strange mod for Half-Life 2 ep 2, “Dear Esther,” where you basically spend the entire game doing two things: going insane, and dying.

Isn’t anyone calling this for the BS it is? This video is a short animated film that doesn’t represent the actual gameplay in any way. Shouldn’t you be condemning instead of hyping the practice of making animated films that distract from the fact that the gameplay isn’t shown and is essentially selling a hidden content? Exactly how many games that have amazing in game content, do not use that strength to sell their product, and instead show none of it?
Don’t get me wrong- this is an amazing piece of artwork. It is captivating. I found myself spellbound while watching it, and I applaud the creators.
Dead Island was scheduled to be released nearly three years ago, in 2008, and the in game footage of the past had nearly nothing in common with this film. Using the film to sell the game feels like a tactic, a ploy to distract the target market with dazzle because the substance is lacking.

Couldn’t say it better than Mr. Graves. Great video, hope the game is at least half as good. Destructible weapons, isn’t that what made everyone love Silent Hill 4: The Room? Guys?
@Graves, valid point, but it’s just an announcement trailer, so they probably haven’t completed enough of the actual gameplay to show it. This is just to get people interested in the finished product, which, in my case, it has.
That was amazing and hard to watch. I’m hoping there are lots of mini bars to raid so I can brake off the bottoms of tiny liquor bottles to go a stabbing with. Oh, and some of those pool noodles to strangle with.
