When I reviewed Skyrim on PS3, I quit before I came across the infamous, still not entirely fixed “chug bug”. Once your save file gets past 6MB, the frame rate drops like a rock. Bethesda has essentially spent the ensuing months trying to fix this problem with little to no actual success. Their reaction has been, well, see image at right.
Admittedly, this is kind of staggering. Bethesda is not some fly-by-night F2P crap factory. They’re one of the most respected developers and publishers in the entire freaking industry. In theory, this is not a problem they should be having.
Now they’ve pretty much just admitted that they suck.
Here’s what they had to say about Dawnguard coming to PS3:
We have tried a number of things, but none of them solve the issue enough to make Dawnguard good for everyone… This is not a problem we’re positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to try to bring you this content.
To translate:
We essentially aren’t able to write code for a console that’s been out for six years because it’s not a PC and apparently we’re completely unable to fix even basic problems.
I don’t think it’s a huge outrage, really, but it is kind of ridiculous. If the PS3 were a new system, one which hadn’t had many open world games pulled off on it, this would be reasonable.
But it’s not. If I can buy, play through, and thoroughly enjoy Dragon’s Dogma and have to buy Skyrim all over again on PC just to play the goddamn thing for a point of comparison, something is broken here.
And it ain’t the PS3.

It’s not just Skyrim, anything with their Gameryo engine can have this on PS3. My New Vegas saves are all unplayable and I’ve heard many say the same with Fallout 3. Oblivion was ported to PS3 by another developer, so it’s the only one that seems to work properly (sad right?). Once your save hits a certain size, your game turns into a very slow stop-motion film, and DLC somehow manages to make it even worse. I really thought they’d have fixed it by Skyrim but I’m not surprised.
The only Bethesda property I’ve had serious issues with so far is Oblivion. After a certain point, it will refuse to boot save files entirely.
I can’t believe this isnt fixed yet!. My buddy quit Skyrim because of this bug a month after it came out! He had to reboot every 45 minutes just to make the game somewhat playable. A 6mb save is nothing. Can you even complete the game without getting this bug? Its been 9 months and they still can’t fix it. PS3 owners should get a refund or a PC version credit or something. The PS3 version is effectively broken and worthless.
You can’t complete this game without hitting this bug on PS3. Once I knew about it I did my best to keep my file size down but it’s pretty much impossible. That said 6MB is a HELLACIOUSLY big save file for a video game.
Is it? I had no idea that was huge for a video game, but looking at other saves from other games you are correct sir. 6mb is not that big for a Skyrim save, there fixed.
I thought the patch was making a game so crappy nobody would ever play it long enough to run into the bug.
I couldn’t disagree more. I love Skyrim and I’ve played it through completion and Dawnguard. On a PC.
I played your mom through completion on a PC.
It really is mind-blowing. We’re talking about probably one of the five biggest games (maybe the very biggest… talking about importance/hype, not size) to ever hit the PS3, and after nearly a year and 4 million units sold, the developer still can’t get the shit working right. Seriously that just doesn’t make any goddamn sense to me. I guess they must have cut corners early on in getting the basic engine to work on PS3, and that produced a shoddy result, which is rife with bugs and just breaks down further whenever a patch comes to try and fix the shit that’s already wrong.
Flashes of my Fallout New Vegas nightmares on XBOX 360…just stop by their bug forum and see how many people are still dealing with New Vegas bugs.
Heh, I’ve never done that before. It’s like gamer atrocity tourism.
Gamer Atrocity Tourism. I laughed so hard at that.
And also: DRAGONS DOGMA FTW!
My files are pushing 9mb atm, its not that bad, nowhere near as bad as New Vegas IMO…
Also I’ve ben finishing off loads of quests I’ve let gather up, and that seems to be reducing my file size a bit.
